Opening with a tough Silver Creek team, the Tigers trailed 6-0 at half and dropped the game by a score of 17-0. Silver Creek went on to win 10 in a row before losing in the semifinals of state. The next opponent was a very large Shickley team. The Tigers lost the contest 28-6 but got on the scoreboard first and could have won the game but for a couple of costly mistakes. Shickley was rated 6th in the state at the time. The Tigers then came up against a very talented Lawrence team. Lawrence defeated Fairmont easily, and went undefeated for the season winning the state championship in class D-1. Fairmont also lost some close games and with a few breaks this team could have won more ball games. The Tigers lost to Chester-Hubbell on a mud soaked field 20-13 and when the final gun sounded was on the Chester-Hubbell 10 yd. line. Fairmont also lost to Roseland 26-20 in overtime The win of the season came against Milligan Fairmont rolled to 526 yards and beat the Roosters 50-20. The defense shut down the Milligan passing game and the offense could run at will. Over all injuries hampered the Fairmont effort, and there were some good efforts put forth. Phil Swartz did a fine job at quarterback and Brian Werrstead and Pat Rasmussen were fine Tight ends. Brian was selected to 2nd team all Conference. Brent Reed and Tim Lowe gave good efforts at running backs and will have even a better season next year as they are seniors. The offensive line was anchored by Shawn Frazier, Mike Scheil and Mike Schepers. All three of these deserve a pat on the back for their fine effort. This team had one motto Never let up. Never give up! Even though the record was 1-8 these young men did this and played against the best competition in the state. Can we quit now, coach? STRAWBERRY PATCH Fairmont, Nebr. 68354 268-6561
