Text from Pages 1 - 72 of the 1982 volume:

With Great Appreciation To Emma Susan Smith ♦ ♦ ♦ The students of Fairmont Public Schools would like to dedicate the annual to the oldest living graduate of Fairmont Fligh School. Emma Susan Flaughawout Smith. Emma Smith was born on July 9. 1882 in Fairmont to Joseph and Emaline (Steineger) Haughawout in their farm house. She joined the family with four brothers and two sisters. Emma grew up and attended Fairmont Public Schools, finishing the twelfth grade in 1901. She then attended a two-year business college. Emma has lived in Fairmont all of her life except for seven years when she moved to Lincoln and was a bookkeeper for the Harley Drug Co. She then moved back to Fairmont and married Harry A. Smith on June 17. 1914. To this family, two children were born. Margret Smith Nichols and Dale Smith. Besides taking care of her children. Emma took care of the house and painted china. China painting, along with crocheting are Emma's favorite hobbies. In her lifetime, she has crocheted over 125 afghans and painted several sets of china. When asked what she liked the least about being a housewife, Emma replied. I hated doing the dishes.” Before she came to the nursing home. Emma liked to keep very busy. She belonged to the Federated Church of Fairmont and taught Sunday School for many years. She also loved to help improve the community. Emma now resides at the Fairview Manor Nursing Home in Fairmont, where she remains active making afghans for raffles and some are for sale. Emma has contributed a great deal to the Fairmont Community in her lifetime and we appreciate her devotion. 2 Troy B. Starr Teresa M. Lowe I David L. Laschanzky Susan L. Johnson James D. The girls 1981 season was one of discovery and changes. The girls tried some new skills and attitude adjustments which led to two victories, including Lawrence and Gresham. The team consisted of many young players who gained experience and skill, to be used as a building block for future years. Although their record was not the best, the girls showed improvement and at times learned to take charge on the floor. The girls gained the respect of many of their competitors and fans. Hopefully future years will be brighter for the tigerettes. TIGER S DEN Fairmont. Nebraska 19 Football ''81” Back - Randy Vader. Dan Bures. Junior Simacek. Shawn Frazier. Mark Quick. Shawn Seward. Playing a rugged schedule of six teams with 6-3 records or better, 3 conference champions, and 2 state qualifiers, the Tigers fell from its perch atop the conference to a 2-7 record. The team competed, improved, and gained valuable experience throughout the season. Several tigers received post season recogni- tion. Doug Scheil was named first team All Conference Linebacker. He was also given honorable mention in the Hastings Tribune. Omaha World Herald and the Lincoln Star. Jim Lott was given honorable mention All Conference Defensive End while Brent Reed received honorable mention All Conference Defensive Tackle. JERRY L. SMITH OIL, INC. Fairmont MOUL REFRIGERATION. He put in a lot of extra hours, and showed a lot of guidance. The 1982 season showed signs of improvement. The Lady Tigers won more games this year than in former years. They played state ranked Stromsburg in District tournaments, and this finished their season. Winning honors this year was Julie Bristol. She made all conference, honorable mention. The youthful team was predicted to have a rebuilding season due to lack of height and inexperienced players. Doug Scheil. Jim Lott, and Scott Jantzi were the only three seniors to play on varsity. The season ended with 9 wins and 10 losses, however, four games were lost by a margin of no more than 3 points. Coach Anderson and Asst.
