Text from Pages 1 - 72 of the 1975 volume:

A year to remember . . . . 10 12 14 Photo Credits: United Press International, Newbury Park, Ca., High School In Memory Alan Johnson Our annual is a book of memories, memories that were created by thir- teen years of sharing and caring. If we forget our triumphs and failures, good times and bad, happy moments and sad, our annual is there to remind us. It is a common reference for all of us, a tangible bond of memories. Because of its significance to us, the Seniors of 1975 wish to dedicate this annual to the one who didn t live to wear the cap and gown, Alan Johnson. Alan Johnson was our friend, classmate, and above all, an inspira- tion. His fortitude in the face of his inexorable fate, has become an in- spiration for all of us. When the chips were down, he looked up. He was always laughing, joking, and keep- ing up the spirits of those around him. We knew him as Big Al , not only because of his size, but also because of the magnitude of his character. He is still very much a part of this graduating class, for we cannot, and will not, sever the years shared. Therefore, we dedicate this annual to the memory of Alan Dale Johnson. It is a part of him, and a part of us. Compliments Of: NICHOLS PHILLIPS 66 SERVICE-Fair- mont, Nebr. BLOCK TRAILER SALES, INC.-Fairmont FAIRMONT POST OFFICE-Fairmont HILTY'S DEPT. The 1974-75 cheerleaders are Jeanette Fischer, Kathy Daws, Kim Thompson, Linda Fischer, Cyn Hulse, Kathy Whitehead and Karen Kness. Jeanette is the B-team Head cheerleader, while Linda, Kathy and Cindy cheered with her at the B-team basketball games. Kim is the Varsity Head cheerleader with Cyn, Kathy and Karen helping her. They cheered for the football and basketball teams leading them on to victories. They attended a day clinic in Kearney and organized a successful ’’Spirit Week”. The girls are especially proud because they helped to cheer the boys on to a successful sports season. Preparing for pep rallies, and doing pompom routines were just a few of the things they did. Four Seniors, one Junior, one Sophomore and two Freshmen make up this cheering squad. The B-team cheerleaders are Linda, Cindy, Jeanette-Head and Kathy. The F.H.S. cheerleaders doing their thing. Sparked by some rugged defense the Fairmont Tigers turned their grid fortunes around this fall. With 14 letter men to build around the Tigers posted one of the best football season’s in the his- tory of the school with their 9-1 final record. Defense was definitely the word for the Ti- gers as they shut-out 5 opponents and gave up only 34 points on the way to their 9-0 regular season record. The only loss was a 14-3 decision to Shickley in the Pioneer Conference playoff game which ultimately decided the states best team in class D 11 man football. Accomplishments of the 1974 football team include: A 3-2 regular season victory over Shick- ley which earned Fairmont the number 1 spot for the final five weeks of the season, Pioneer Con- ference East Division Champions, and a final rat- ing of second in the state by both the major papers of N ebraska. Mo ISA 1 The nation’s energy crisis continued throughout the year with gasoline prices soaring to all-time highs. 2 Faced with higher auto operating costs, many students rediscovered the enjoyment of nature. 3 Service station operators in some parts of the country were forced to close due to petroleum shortages. 4 Administration sources reported that a supply of gasoline ration- ing coupons similar to the above have already been printed in the event rationing becomes necessary. 5 Lagging sales brought about layoff in the auto industry and swamped the unemployment offices nearest to the affected auto assembly plants. 6 After reverting to fossil fuels due to petroleum shortages, power company officials became uneasy when the United Mine Workers threatened to strike and carefully watched their dwindling coal supplies. 7 Protesting higher fuel prices, independent truckers blockaded numerous truck stops across the country. 8 Suspended by a parachute, Evel Knievel and his ‘‘rocket cycle” head for the bottom of Snake River Canyon in Idaho after premature opening of the chute aborted his attempt to cross the 1,700- foot wide canyon under steam power. 9 With Daylight Savings Time in effect in the early months of 1974, students found themselves walking to school in the dark. 10 A Turkish jetliner crashed in the woods north of Paris in March, killing all of the 345 passengers and crew members aboard. The crash ranks as the single worst airline disaster on record. 11 The once-thriving recreational vehicle market also suffered due to the energy crisis as evidenced by the hun- dreds of unsold motor homes outside of Winnebago’s plant in Forest City, la. 12 Many farmers gave up hope of harvesting a decent corn crop due to ex- treme drought conditions in the Midwest and chose instead to chop their crop for silage. An early frost affected the soybean harvest and overall yields of corn and beans were cut drastically. 13 Market prices for hogs topped those of cattle for nearly all of the year. A New York farm organization donated hun- dreds of calves to charity rather than destroy them in protest to rising produc- tion costs and low market prices. 14 Following an excellent year in 1973, the 1974 agriculture picture was dimmed by forces of inflation and recession. A year to remember . 14 Photo Credits: United Press International. Sharpsville, Pa., Senior High School
