I am one who has studied hard and relentlessly so that one day I may receive the accomplished mark of a graduates goal, a diploma. I am one who has achieved success towards this par- ticular goal but now my tomorrow only lies open and unexplored, waiting to be determined not by only the mathematics, English, or history I have retained but what high school has taught me about life itself. It proved to be very interesting and they also gained many experiences. On August 22, before school started they went to Lincoln for the annual Shrine Bowl. On October 9, they attended Melody Roundup at Hastings where they earned a II rating. A few weeks following this they went to Lincoln where they marched in class competition at the Pershing Auditorium Marching Clinic. They also received a II rating here. On March 23, they worked very hard at Dorchester, where they performed in the evening for the Pioneer Band Clinic. Then on April 6, eleven people attended the Clarinet Clinic at Sutton. District Music Contest was held in Fairmont on April 22 and 23. They completed their year with four superiors (I) and eighteen excellents (II) at contest. A great deal of thanks and appreciation go out to Mr. Machal, the band director, who spent a good deal of time and effort with the band. Block Clubs Keep You Busy Since the office practice class was too small this year to edit a school paper, a few Senior volunteers took over the task. Throughout the school year whenever time was sparing, these girls would be working dili- gently to complete one of the seven issues of Tiger Time. Looking it over: Sharon Smith, Deb Boardman, Wanda Chapman, Miss Berg, Carol Homan, Judy Tucker. The Speech Club proudly returned to Fairmont on March 2, 1971 with the Pioneer Conference Trophy theirs once more. A tight schedule did not permit a Speech class this year, so all the work was done on spare time. Officers of the speaking group consisted of: President Pat O'Connor, Vice-President Pam Adams, and Secretary Pam Nelson. The Club did exceedingly well at District as they tied for third out of over thirty schools. Every mem- ber was pleased with the year's accomplishments. For example, the bulletin boards were always beau- tifully decorated, and the record department was developed more fully. To earn money, the ambi- tious members sponsored a film, SOMETHING'S DUCKY, and sold popcorn at it. Officers for the '70- '71 school year were: President Sharon Smith, Vice-President Pat Ritchey, Secretary Helen Daws, and Treasurer JoAnn Plock. After attending an enlightning convention at South Sioux City on November 14, 1970, the enthusiastic members began working on the student lounge and rented a pop machine. May 10, and 12, 1971 were the memorable days of Dress-Up Day , and Slouch Day. All the Freshmen dressed the way their assigned Senior told them and wore it both in school and at night. Some of the things they did at night were to crawl through a set of tires, dunk each of their faces in a soupy mixture specially prepared for green Freshmen, then blow flour in their faces to stick to it, and sing the song that the Seniors composed for them. After that they had a trial and each Senior decided the punishment for their assigned Freshman. When all of this torture was over the Seniors had a lunch for the Freshmen to show their friendship and to assure them that they were properly welcomed to FHS. 36 County Government Day Was Both Educational And Fun Seated on Left Shane Reed, Coleen McMahon, Carol Ackland, Carol Henkel, Standing Jo Ann Jennett, Dale Kroeker. A Night To Remember Big 8 Conference Where is everybody? The Junior-Senior Prom was the final fling that the two classes would have to- gether. It was both a happy and sad affair. At 6:30 p.m. on May 8, 1971, the Juniors and Seniors gathered at the American Legion Hall for the banquet, where the theme Paris Nights was displayed in silver and blue. After the banquet, at 9:00, everyone again met, this time with their dates, at the school for the dance. Blue Image provided music, and every- one danced. The Eiffel Tower in the cen- ter of the room was the main attraction, and the sidewalk cafe scene provided a place to sit. At 12:00, the magic ended, and the Juniors and Seniors parted from their last dance together as FHS students. What ya' doin', Ben, spiking the punch? The Band??? Maybe the Ding Dong Convention. Home- coming was supposed to be held on October 9, but the weather was against us. The second date was October 23. Prior to this date, each class (Freshman-Senior), the faculty, and the pep club made a float for the parade held the afternoon of the 23rd. This was the first time FHS had done anything like this and it was quite a success. The floats were judged and awarded prizes at the half-time of the game. The winners were: lst-Sophomores, 2nd- Freshmen, 3rd-Seniors. Presentation of royalty and the dedication of our Homecoming to the memory of Rod Opfer was also at half- time. King Lonnie Taylor was crowned by the 1st attendant Jim Lovegrove. King Lonnie then crowned Deb Kahler as the 1970 Homecoming Queen. After the game, King Lonnie and Queen Deb reigned over the Homecoming dance to the music of the Pete Moss Band. Besides being our Homecoming dance, this was also a victory celebration as the Tigers defeated Ruskin by a score of 28 to 6. Season's Climax: Royalty included: First attendants-Jim Lovegrove and Sherri Gir- mus, Queen Patsy O’Connor and King Ken West, and second attend- ants-Pam Adams and Dave Ekwall. A season of hard work was brought to a close by the annual Athletic Banquet. The Pep Club worked hard all year to honor our athletes at this banquet. The theme that the pep club chose for the 1971 Athletic Ban- quet was Tiger Generation. Toastmistress LuAnn Keller opened the banquet by welcoming everybody. Reverend Reitmeier gave the invoca- tion and the meal was then served by the eighth grade class. After the dinner, speeches and pres- entation of awards were given by the football coach-Mr. Gilpin and the basketball coach-Mr. Roberts. Next, Mrs. Swisher presented the volley- ball awards. The honorary football captain-Jim Lovegrove, the honorary basketball captain-Ken West and honorary volleyball co-captains - Patsy O'Connor and Sherri Girmus were honored. Pep Club awards were presented by LeAnne Bender, and Luann Ras- mussen gave the speech for the Outstanding Pep Club Member. Toastmistress LuAnn Keller led the program. Patsy O'Connor and Ken West were crowned King and Queen of Tiger Generation. Athletic Banquet All members having all their merits left were honored. Mr. Ekwall presented to the school the trophy in dedication of Rod Opfer. The royalty was then presented by Paula Opfer. Second runners-up were Dave Ekwall and Pam Adams. First runners-up were Sherri Girmus and Jim Lovegrove. King and Queen were Ken West and Patsy O'Connor. The announcement of the cheerleaders and pep club officers for next year was announced by Patsy O'Connor. They are: President-Jo- Ann Jennett, Vice President-LeAnne Bender, Secretary-Treasurer-Mildred Holland and News Reporter-Shelley W’inkelman. Cheer- leaders in this order are: Deb Kinley, Pam Nelson, Colleen McMahon, Joyce Bellows, Cynthia Hulse, and Marcia Chapman. We feel that this year was very successful and we hope next year is just as good. Music for the dance was provided by Cannon. The coaches and their wives enjoy the dance. FHS students and guests enjoy the first Athletic Banquet dance. Hillbilly Weddin’ The Senior Class presented a hillbilly comedy, entitled •'Hillbilly Weddin’ ”, April 16, 1971. Paw has six problems, in the form of six unmarried daughters. Juney Lou wants to marry Homer. Since he wants to marry her the solution seems simple, but Maw has decided Juney Lou cannot be married until Ceelie, a ripe old nineteen, and Bonnie Mae are safely married off. Paw takes his shotgun off the wall with a very simple method of procuring the necessary husbands in mind. In the midst of husband chasing Ronald Maxwell, a medical student, arrives at the cabin. They are touring the hills and their car breaks down. Both Ceelie and Bonnie Mae are attracted to the handsome stranger. Two neighbors decide that the handsome stranger loose among the Valley's most attractive girls is a menace they must do away with. They decide to fake a feud to scare him away, using Ceelie as bait. Paw finally forces Ronald to the altar with Ceelie. Just in the nick of time Bonnie Mae rescues Ronald, Ceelie finds a husband who really wants her and it’s a happy ending for all concerned. I am one who has used by physical strength and talent to the best of my ability to assure a position on the team. I am an individual-one of the individuals-that must learn to co-operate at all times with the coach and my team- mates to provide efficient teamwork. I am one who has become involved in sports, learning that the way I practice indicates the way I will play the game. I, am one who has taken the time to learn the many rules and regulations of my sport, so that I may play fairly and understand the referees' actions. Eightman football made its comeback in Tiger country after a long absence. It's comeback brought back the best football season the Tiger's have had for three years. The Tiger squad compiled a 4-5 record. The Tiger coaching staff was headed by Craig Gilpin, with Lloyd Roberts as his assistant. Both coaches showed great interest and pushed the team to excell 100%. The season record does not look so successful, but hard work, desire, determination, and a little greediness made it look quite replenishing after previous years. The 70 team's hopes of replen- ishing the trophy case were futilely lost. As the Tigers fell to eightman, they also lost a conference in which to compete. The independency brought on a tough schedule and excellent teams tough, as they met Trumbull, Milligan, Doni- phan, Giltner, and Barnes- ton. Hard work and deter- mination paid off as humili- ation came hard to come by. The biggest highlight in the Tiger season had to be the 28-6 Homecoming win over Ruskin. Other games placed an enthusiastic impression in the school's spirit also. Hopefully, it increased TIGER SPIRIT for years to come. DONATIONS BY! After a three game losing streak the Tigers earned a second-place showing in the tough Shickley Invitational. The high point of the year's action was the Pioneer Conference Tournament in Geneva. After a first round victory over Clay Center the Tiger cagers upset top-rated Davenport with an exciting and breath-taking victory. In the semi-finals the dark horse Tigers, with pure determination and team work dumped the favorite, Meridian, to thus advance to the finals. Here they fell to State Tourney bound Friend, thus receiving the second place trophy. During the tourney's action Ken West, Dave Ekwall, and Jim Lovegrove were first, fifth, and ninth in the top ten scorers, and Ken West and Jim Lovegrove were among the tourney’s top ten rebounders. The Tigers coached by Lloyd Roberts finished the last leg of their season in impressive style as they crossed the century mark over old-time rival Exeter. The gym, overflowing with screaming fans, looked on as the Tigers shot 75% to complete a runaway. Victories over Davenport and Clay Center followed as spirit soured, however the Tigers again saw a loss in their final regular season game to the tough Friend Bulldogs. After a 9-11 season, the Tigers met Marquette in District competition and fell victim to a last second shot to be beaten. The season ended with a final record of 9-12 which was one of the most successful in the last few years. donations; FRIEND 5 £ TO $1 FRIEND ANIMAL CLINIC Volleyball Team “Sets Up“ Victories Serve, Set Up, and Spike were the words heard by Student Manager LuAnn Drovwal, Roxanne Holland, Coach Swisher, Student Manager Patti Ritchey, Raye Jean Lundberg, Sherri Girmus, Deb Kahler, Lindy O'Connor, Cindy Kahler, Mar garet Jensen, Mildred Holland, Pam Adams, Pat- sy O'Connor, Deb Kinley, and Pam Nelson. ♦Rising City.........We ♦Hampton...........They ♦Hordville.......They McCool..............We Lawrence..........They Giltner...........They Bruning...........They Benedict............We Shickley..........They Dorchester ....
