Although the team was young and the season proved to be frustrating, the players kept up their spirit. Hav- ing a tough schedule didn't hurt the Fairmont Tigers until after the half when most of the teams started pulling away. Going into the Henderson Invitational with one win the Tigers received third place. Get- ting beat by Sutton the first night gave the boys more desire to win the second night. Fairmont came home with another win over Harvard in a double overtime and a third place trophy. District Tournaments, which were held in Crete this year, gave the Tigers another win. Beating Douglas by 30 points gave the Tigers confidence the second night, in which they were to play Milligan. Fairmont was in the game until the second half when Milligan started pulling away and Fairmont couldn't catch up. This ended the 68-69 basketball season. Volleyball was something new for FHS girls this year. The team was organized and coached by Mr. Milton. It was a learning situation, as well as an active sport. Rules and tech- niques were learned and applied. Many Sunday afternoons were spent preparing and practicing. Palming, poor serving, and incorrect spiking were just a few of the obstacles to be overcome. For a new team the FHS girls did well. They were able to capture two of three regular season games, winning over Milligan and Exeter and bowing only to Dorchester. The girls also participated in the Hastings Chamber of Commerce Invitational in which 35 teams were entered. Unfortunately Guide Rock's more experienced team edged FHS but in a first round bout. On Oct. 5, the band attended Grand Island's Harvest of Harmony, where we received a II rating in field marching competition. On Oct. 26, the band traveled to Omaha for the Omaha University Band Day. We attended an Air Force Band concert in Lincoln on Oct. 30 and enjoyed it very much. On Nov. 2, Fairmont earned a II rating at the Marching Clinic at Pershing Auditorium. Six people attended a stage band clinic at Nebraska Wesleyan University on Feb. 1, and eleven people went to a clarinet clinic in Exeter on March 10. We presented our winter band concert on Feb. 19. Nine schools participated in the Pioneer Conference Band Clinic held in Fairmont on March 25. The guest clinician was Mr. Duane Johnson of Hastings College. The District Mu- sic Contest was also held in Fairmont, on April 24-25. Fairmont earned 9 I ratings for vocal and instrumental small groups and solos. Six cheerleaders and seven officers were elected at the beginning to rule over the entire Pep Club. This year the Pep Club was very pleased to have with them a foreign ex- change student from Brazil, Ana Luiza Amaral de Souza. We held a tea for Ana, Mrs. Block, Janet, and Julie in honor of Ana. The Pep Club presented Ana with a Fairmont Pep Club outfit, num- erals, and chevrons. Other ac- tivities during the year were: Homecoming ceremonies. Ath- letic Banquet, and weekly pep rallies in the gym to promote school spirit throughout the school year. Bottom Row: Pam Adams, Pat O'Connor, Sherri Girmus, Middle Row: Barb Jorgensen, Kay Havel. Toastmistress for the evening was Peg O'Connor. A delicious meal was served by members of the Eighth Grade and after-wards they entertained the audience with a skit. The basketball and football awards were presented by Coach Adams. Mr. Milton pre- sented the Pep Club awards. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of the royalty. The 1969 King and Queen are Kay Havel and John Miles. Following the crowning, very interesting speeches were given by the guest speakers, Mick Ziegler and Ernie Sigler. News Commentary. Pam Elliott- Fillmore County Winner of U.F.W. Speech. Speech Club Activities Oral communication is a necessary part of life, and learning to improve one's speech can be profitable and enjoyable at the same time. Hence, in speech we try to develope in our stu- dents a liking for speaking better than they ever have before. At the same time they learn the increasing importance of speech. While the main purpose, therefore, is not to produce contest winners as such, we do en- courage this and would be pleased if all could deserve a superior rating. Linda Chapman won superiors again this year on her speech entries in contest work, TV News Commentary. It just so happens that this is perhaps the most difficult and controversial category. Four sophomores, Dave Ekwall, Ken West, Patsy O'Connor, and Pam Adams, entered the speech contest with oral readings of drama. Their efforts won excellent ratings. The one-act play won an excellent at the Pioneer Conference Contest. Although it was not rated as well at the District Contest, all participants learned much from their experiences. Excellent ratings at the District Speech Contest were also won by Pam Elliott, Wendy Reitmeier, Sondra Holtmeier, Kathy Hall, and Bonnie Real. Pam Elliott was the Fillmore County Winner of the V.F.W. taped speech on FREEDOM'S CHALLENGE. In the local American Legion Speech Contest Dan Bohling placed first, Pam Elliott sec- ond, and Shirley Tucher third. Pam won third in the District American Legion Contest. Ana Luiza Amaral de Souza of Brazil entered speech class the second semester. She participated in the Pioneer Conference Speech Contest. In November, the speech club went to the York college theater and saw a play called The Skin of Our Teeth. Following the death of former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, a convocation was held to honor him. The speech class presented readings about different phases of his life. 47 Annual Staff Editor .........Peg O'Connor Junior Editor ....
