Prom Aides Farmington students made themselves at home in the various classrooms. 1974 — The year we shared our school When Farmington High School was closed in January ol 1974, a place was made for them in FSH. They arrived at about 12:30 p.m. every day. Vacant rooms were readily put to use until the FSH students left at 2:25 p.m. Farmington admin- istration could be found in Mr. Julian’s office and the main office. Their counselor used the Maple Leaves room between the main library and the stackroom. Athletics were practiced in the girls’ gym in the main building. FSH student council members served as guides for them on the first day. The bulletin board in the main hall even displayed Farmington’s activities alongside FSH’s. Students doubled up in lockers so they may share some. Farmington’s school day ended at 5:40 p.m. each day. Teachers and students fell back into the pace of everyday life. Farmington faculty was as common in the afternoons as FSH faculty. BfcLOW: The “new” students arrived in several smaller buses. Darkness and All lights were turned on in the building of a morning as the darkness lingered. BELOW: Drivers, including 1SH students, found endless lines at the gas stations during the fuel shortage and the truckers’ strike. Fairmont Senior High School along with all other Marion County schools opened one hour later on January 14 so students would not have to leave for school in the darkness caused by Daylight Savings Tune. Though classes began later, they ended at the usual time. This plan allowed for each class to be cut ten minutes. It was devised as a compromise to satisfy those who did not want to stay an hour later and those who did not like leaving home before sunrise. It eliminated the danger of students waiting for a bus or walking to school in the dark. Regular classes resumed on March 4 when the sun rose earlier. New mercury lights were installed along the walkway to the main building to brighten up the campus. The mercury lights provided more light than the regular lights. Kaleidoscope Dawn...
