We are reminded everyday as we pass the flag, the statue ot Lincoln, the documentary plaques, and the quotations above the entrance doors that one of the most important ideals at our American way ot life is the access to education. Without this right we at Fairmont Senior High School would not know the pleasures and the rewards that high school lite provides. It has been up to us to take advantage of this opportunity. During the past year we have been challenged to do our best and accept responsibilities along with honors. ln future years we shall review this year- book and think of our high school days and recall the privilege at being an American youth. He is one of the men we must thank for making America what it is today, Abraham Lincoln personifies the American way of thinking-the idea ot liberty and equality for all. Just as Lincoln is a landmark in the growth of our nation, he is a landmark at Fairmont Senior High School. The statue of Lincoln is a convenient place for meeting friends, but it is much more than that. To all of us, this statue should represent a goal, the goal of becoming good citizens. Although Lincoln symbolizes many things to the underclassmen, he means much more to seniors. As we seniors go through our last year at F.H.S., we realize that soon we will be the ones to show the world that the American way is the best way, the o ily way. Throughout our high school years we have gained maturity and experience, and as our days at Fairmont Senior High School draw to a close, we pause to look at Lincoln, and he inspires us to use the knowledge we have gained here in the building of an even better America. To reach this goal, the junior does more than just work. He develops and grows not only as a student but as a citizen as well. The Junior Class Bake Sale instructs him in the principles of business, The junior learns also the importance of teamwork and loyalty by participating in sports and cheering on the Polar Bears. The Junior Carnival teaches him a sense of responsibility. His classes give him the knowledge to use his talents to their fullest extent. The night of the Prom arrives. The months of work and study are nearly finished, but the qualities which the junior has been developing through the year continue to grow, making the junior a citizen able and willing to serve his country. the Workzng CMS. . . SPORTS AT FHS At the typical American high.school three sports dominate the athletic scene traditionally. However, in recent years educators have come to believe that athletics should be a major part of a secondary school's program. Consequently, it is suggested by these educators that more students be encouraged to participate in sports activities. For this reason Fairmont Senior High offers seven sports: football, basketball, baseball, track, cross country, wrestling, and golf. The football team, which finished with one' of its worst records in years, is coached by Jim Feltz, Bob Delorenzo, William Reppert, and Anthony if .V Delligetti. Basketball and baseball are directed by Wil' liam Reppert. Two junior varsity basketball squads are headed by Bob Delorenzo and Joe Muto. Delorenzo also coaches track, while Louis Julian assumed the helm of the cross country team. Wrestling and golf are directed by head football coach Jim Feltz. Fairmont Senior has always been recognized for its representative athletic teams. This was shown to be true when an inexperienced basketball squad was selected ninth in the state in a pre-season poll this year. 5. Football Provides First Excitement ES if: -3: :::.,,:E?g - . TALE OF THE SEASON FHS 27 FARMINGTON 13 The Polar Bears seemingly indicated that they were a better ball club than some alarmists had forecast by defeating the Farmington Farmers 27-l3. Rick Helm, Denny Gibson, and Steve Riecleman scored, and quarter- back Chuck Hall passed for a TD. Coach Feltz express- ed concern over the performance of the defense after the game. FHS 9 MORGANTOWN 39 The Mohigans confirmed coach Feltz's worst fears as they routed the Bruins 39-9. Morgantown took advan- tage of early Bear fumbles, and by the time the offense had regained the poise of the previous week, the contest was as good as over. FHS 7 PHILIP BARBOUR 6 Philip Barbour's Colts gave the Feltzman more trouble than they should have, for the Bears had not completely recovered from the previous week's debacle. Bulldozer Steve Riedeman scored the Polar Bear touchdown. FHS 6 GRAFTON 'I4 An under-rated Grafton eleven pulled out a hard fought victory over the Polar Bears. The contest was not decided until the final minute when Chuck Hall was upended in his own end zone, giving Grafton two in- surance points on a safety. The Bearcats probably could have defeated the Bears a little more soundly, though, had they been less butter-fingered. I5 4 Veteran Albie Cross knocks a pass away from Oak Glen's Dan Clark. The Bruins won this contest by a I4-8 count. Season Had Its Ups and owns. . . FHS 6 CLARKSBURG VICTORY 'I2 Unfortunately almost only counts in horseshoes, for the Polar Bears nearly emerged with one of the bigger upsets of the season. They probably would have if they had been able to pick up a critical first down. As it was, Victory went home with a shakey l2-6 win. FHS 7 BUCKHANNON 39 Buckhannon's Buc-Ups, who seem to relish putting a damper on FHS homecoming festivities, did it again this season by whipping the Bruins 39-7. The Bears were definitely not the some team as they wefe against Victory, for Bucs had no business routing the Feltzmen. FHS 35 ELKINS 7 Pity the poor tigersl The Bears, exasperated from three straight losses, invaded Elkins with blood in their eyes unleashing an awesome offensive show. The Feltz- men could do no wrong and routed the Elkins eleven 35-7, FHS 7 WASHINGTON IRVING 40 Washington Irving extinguished the fire that the bears had seemingly set the week before. The l-lilltoppers left no doubt about their intentions either as they romped over the Bears 40-7. The Bear's lone TD came on a final quarter pass from Chuck Hall to Junior Jones. FHS 14 OAK GLEN 8 Oak Glen brought their ninth ranked flip-flop offense team to town and flopped. lt was one of the big- gest upsets in area athletic circles and set the stage for the season climax with East Fairmont. sl i ... FOOTBALL MANAGERS Larry Bee and Mark Summers FHS 14 EAST FAIRMONT 46 As was expected, East Fairmont whipped the Bears in the traditional Veteran Day contest. The Bears became the first team to score two touchdowns off the stout East defense, but it was of little consolation, for in defeating the Bears 46-l4 the Bees amassed more points than any other East squad in the 45 year history of the Contest.
