7 MAPLE LEAVES Centennial Edition 1863 1963 1963 PUBLISHED BY THE STUDENTS OF FAIRMONT SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL LOOP PARK FAIRMONT, WEST VIRGINIA The one-room school house will soon be o thing of the post in West Virginio FOREWORD In the past 100 years much has been achieved in our state, com- munity and school. West Virginia has grown from a small back- woods area to a beautiful indus- trial state. Our community has developed from a muddy road set- tlement to a large city, housing a state college, several commercial plants and other numerous enter- prises. Fairmont Senior High has grown from what was once a brick building on Quincy Street with a graduating class of four to one of the finest schools in the state con- sisting of an 11-acre campus on which nearly 900 students trod every day. Indeed much progress has been made. In recognition of our state's birthday, the 1963 Maple Leaves Staff would like to present this “Centennial Edition. The some school house os pictured above was erected lost summer on the campus of Fairmont State College to serve as a museum ond stote landmark. It was dedicoted in October and is the local headquarters for the centennial office. Besides supervising all depart- ments of the yearbook, she has planned the 1963 book to hove more pages and a beautiful pad- ded cover in honor of the state's centennial. Becky is a senior and has worked on Mople Leaves for two years. This past summer she was one of three girls who at- tended Ohio University at Ath- ens for a week's yearbook work- shop. Maple Leaves is the official yearbook of Fairmont Senior High School and has approx- imately 25 staff members. Students are se- lected by written application, sample writings, and a personal interview with Mrs. Irene S. Martin, faculty sponsor. Last year a change was made in the staff selection letting sopho- mores and seniors also work on the book. Be- fore that the yearbook was published by the juniors only. The staff is proud of the many honors won by Maple Leaves in recent years. For the past several years it has been awarded a FIRST PLACE RATING by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association at Columbia University. A highlight of the year, besides getting the yearbook, of course, is a dinner held for both old and new members usually the last part of May. Call on any member of the Projectionists' Club and he will show it for you. That's the job of the entire group. During the year the members study the projector and its parts. When they have learned how to operate it properly, they take a test put out by the Bell Howell Company. If they pass the test they are then qualified to run movies. Club sponsor is Miss Marguerite Stewart. PROM QUEEN G c This poge sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Ormus May PROM Who’s Who at F.H.S. ROBERT GORE ANN LEHMAN One of our school's greatest as- sets has been our outstanding stu- dent body president. Bob's hard work ond friendly manner hove helped win much recognition for our school. His numerous activities hove not kept Bob from maintaining on honor roll average. We are sure that Bob will be o greot success in life. Who says beauty and brains don't mix???? If you do, then you don't know Ann. Besides being a worker and organizer, she ranks among the top in her class scholastically. While here at FHS, Ann has won the ad- miration and respect of her fellow classmates. BECKY ROSS Becky, the editor of Maple Leaves, has worked very hard this year to moke the yearbook bigger and bet- ter than ever. Her enthusiasm for her job shows plainly in this year's beau- tiful Centennial Edition. During her years at Fairmont West Becky has been quite active in many clubs. Cer- tainly her years here have been well spent. TOM MESSMORE Although Tom participates in many activities he still manages to rank among the top students in his class. We hope he will be as successful in life as he has been during his three years at FHS. 116 MARY MAY This pretty girl is definitely an asset to our school. As drum major she has led the Polar Bear Band in winning many awards. Her beauty and popularity also gained her the honor of Prom Queen this year. It is no surprise thot Lee is number one in his class, for he is known among the teachers and fellow students for his outstanding mental ability. Besides being so smort, Lee has a pleasant personality, that is sure to help him become a great suc- cess in life. Mykie, our head cheerleader, con be credited with the terrific school spirit we seem to have. Besides being very popular, she has maintained good grades. We are proud to soy she has been a part of Fairmont Senior High Colemon, who is president of the senior class, has tried to make it the best class ever. He takes part in several organizations, and his sense of humor is well-known to all. JUDY MclNTIRE NANCY FITCH Judy, small but mighty, has shown herself worthy of praise for the ex- cellent job as Hi-Life editor. She has also been a class officer and her years at FHS have been busy and useful ones. Here is a girl who has helped whenever and where ever she has been needed. Although accompany- ing Choraliers takes much of her time, Nancy has managed to moin- toin a high scholastic average and actively participated in many clubs. We think she is a good All Around Student. Who’s Who at F.H.S. 117 We Give These “Special Mention” CENTENNIAL EXHIBITORS The students pictured at left presented paintings which were exhibited with the Centennial Exhibit. They are Marilyn Fowler, Robert Rosier, Jr., Frances Perry and Jack Sprigg. Marilyn's and Jack's work were chosen from this area. STATE ELKS LEADERSHIP WINNERS Bob Gore and Carolyn Nubby Taylor, both seniors at Fairmont Senior High, were announced state winners in the Elks Leadership Contest. Both had to sub- mit a 300-word paper and a scrapbook of their activities. This is indeed a big honor for FHS as seldom can one school boast both boy and girl winners the same year. The pair also competed in the no- tional contest in March. BLAINE IKE ROBINSON pictured at right was named to represent our school in the Voice of Democracy Contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Ike won the school competion from over 50 entries. 118 CUB CHEERLEADERS This year for the first time the student body of FHS selected two sophomores as cub cheerleaders. A three yeor veteran he has proved his capabilities on the hardwood as on the gridiron. A deadly jump shot plus a beoutiful driving layup makes him tough to defense against. A fine middle mon on the fast break, his name will stand out in Fairmont basketball. AL MEKENIE A pesky, hard-nosed, fighting basketball senior, Al has developed into the starting five. As a leoding reserve lost year, he scored over 100 points. A fine set-shot and on arching jumper, Al proves dongerous at all times to his opponent especially when he tokes over the bockcourt assignment.
