This year the press room was cleaned, the staff made its plans and started to work. Here we have spent many anxious hours, writing and rewriting articles, searching for lost manuscripts, and impatiently awaiting delayed contributions. We sometimes became discouraged, but we were buoyed up by the knowledge that we are doing our best for the school. We have tried to seal within the covers of this Maple Leaves the record of the numberless incidents that will soon become happy memories of the past. Therefore, we have tried to make this book modern, beautiful, and interesting to the students of our school. T . vi 3 gi i 1 .I A . . Z CQATENTS I . STUDENT COUNCIL Bk Sk 'lf The Student Council of the Fairmont Senior High School is one of the oldest organizations in the school. It is an honor for any student to be elected a member. The Student Council has been a great help to the faculty of our school in handling its problems. A change in set-up was observed this year. There were, for the first time,' three representatives each from the Junior and Senior classes. This was due to the fact that in the last student election there were tie votes for two boy candidates and tie votes for two girl candidates in Senior and Junior Classes, respectively. This year the Sophomore representatives were appointed by the principal. Besides sponsoring activities to create and develop school spirit, the Student Council assumes responsibility for matters of school control, officially represents the school at public gatherings where it is desirable and necessary to have official repre- sentationg and makes rules and regulations for all activities of the school when such regulations are not provided for in any other way. Members of the Student Council have been busy this year with their activities. They joined the State Student Council organization which was just started this year. They were represented at the convention, which was held at Weston, by Betty Jenkins, who was accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Buckey. The Council also sponsored Rinney Boy who was enjoyed very much by the students. The Council has set a splendid example this year for all coming Student Councils. Page Fifteen, XV QM' vw IVY I. CLASSICAL COURSE One of the most popular courses in Fairmont Senior High School is the Classical Course. This Held prepares the student for entrance into colleges or universities of art, literature, and science. The lure of French and Latin draw many pupils to this course. Foreign languages make the curriculum different from any other of- fered in Fairmont High School. This course leads to a broader education than any other because the subjects cover a Wider field. After finishing high school the Clas- sical student has a better chance to choose the profession for which he is best fitted. Other subjects which are offered are biology, English, history, geometry, higher mathematics, and electives. Page Twenty rf diff maple zhwfm V!! Not until the beginning of the twentieth century did the state feel the responsibility for any vocational training. Up until this time the state felt its obligations fulfilled with the offering of opportunities for a classical or liberal education and training. The change of con- ditions has forced the state to recognize a need for a more practical education. Commercial education as is now offered in our school aims to equip the individual for entrance into business life. It not only pre- pares the stenographer, bookkeeper, and typist, but it also prepares the future business man for his calling. Here he is acquainted with business principles and types of transactions. The professional man too, should have a thorough knowledge of bookkeeping and typing, for too often the business part of his work is left entirely to the stenog- rapher. Some commercial subjects may also be of value to the Classi- cal student in aiding him in both his studies and earning power in college. Thus the wide and varied need for the knowledge of commer- cial subjects will explain the popularity of this course. xii N li A li marie 35mm Rs' f fx - H RRR A' dWH--Z- 1U .f 5- 'ZX gg' IL SHIRLEY CURREY, '36 Student Council, '34 Choral Club Blue Triangle Secretary Junior Class Maple Leaves, '36 JOHN DEISON, '36 Coodlc Hi-Y Wrestling Maple Leaves, '36 President Sophomore Class President Junior Class MARY LOUISE BERNALIJO, '35 'lBf, l'llIt ' Athletic Club Y- Choral Club ' Jerry of Jericho Road s Blue Triangle X The Whole Town's Talking J. Appreciation of good work- manship and design is stressed. The pupil is trained in the habit of an orderly method of procedure in the performance of any task. In mechanical drawing each pupil gains a knowledge and under- standing of mechanical drawing, the interpretations of the conventions in drawings and working diagrams, and the ability to express his ideas by means of a drawing. The handling of the more common tools and machines gives the pupil elementary skills in modifying materials, and an understanding of the more common construction problems. This course is taken by those who intend to follow some mechanical trade or occupation. gliflaple 311921825 A A 5 ALBERT COLLINS, '36 HAI!! . It is here that the future engineers begin their prepara- tion for their chosen profession. Not only is the Technical Course most essential for those planning for engineering careers, but it also contains a great deal that is of value to other students. Problems similar to those encountered in one's daily experiences and contacts are presented and solved through the application of the principles taught in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. The future home-maker, the future business and pro- fessional man or woman can profit much through the instruction of- fered in this department. ., , . , I . 1 Srila . ciiflnplr EZIPEIIJPB . , , . , , . 5 in f THOMAS IVIANLHX, 36 F1 J 'Vs-QL I 'I'nmn1!l - I I , ' Plmtugr':1pIwv's' Club Lk-Y' 'Q v Printing Club P' fll'l'llUSt,l'2l., Band ' Give Club - N Biology Award ,faan LOUIS MOROOSIC, '35 T Athletic Club FICCII, DOYAI. The members of the class came from various other schools, and they were not sufficiently acquainted with each other to establish a staff of of- ficers in September. Few class meetings were held, but after a few months the class became an established part of the institution. Many talented and brilliant students have been discovered in the group, and we feel sure that the graduating class of 1937 has made a good begin- ning toward three years of outstanding work in building and uphold- ing an honorable name for Fairmont Senior High School. i i s ,fy V17 marie Www se P MR. The object of the Ad Astra Chapter of the National Honor Society is: to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a d'esire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in the pupils of Fairmont Senior High School. Membership in this society is based on character, scholarship, leadership, and service. Students must stand in the upper quartile of their class in the four objectives of the organization. They are selected for membership by the faculty of the school. The society is t.he most outstanding organization in the school. It is a great honor to be elected to membership because of the rigid qualifications that are upheld. On the emblem of the society is a torch around which are the letters, C., S., L., and S., which stand for Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service. The journalism class studies the various parts of a newspaper and an elected staff publishes the paper semi-monthly. In former years the great number of students of journalism necessi- tated the use of two staffs to publish the paper at alternate periods. This year, however, there was only one class in journalism and the twenty-five members published Hi-Life. The make-up of a newspaper: news, feature and human interest stories, advertising, reviews, editorials, and columns, were studied throughout the year. Many of the girls work as hard as the boys to earn their letters. They enter 'all the tournaments for individuals as ping pong, jacks, shuffle board, and roller skating and are present for the games when their team plays. Six hundred points by the end of the senior year or an average of two hundred points a year for the number of years the student has worked, are needed before she is entitled to a letter, which is awarded to her on recognition day. Under the able direc- tion of Miss Jenkins the Thespians were certain of the dramatic success they made in Fairmont High School this year. The purpose of the National Thespian Society is to promote interest in 'high school dramatics. You will remember the tender hearted Mimi in Mimi Lights The Candle. The dramatization of the Christmas play and the three-act mys- tery, The Ryerson Mystery, showed that there is efceptional talent in the organization. In order to become a member the student must show acting ability and participate in some of the school plays given during the year. From the opening whistle to the final gun the '34 Polar Bears fought, and fought hard. The Bears, this year inherited from their coach an indomitable fighting spirit which has given us a great goal to strive for in future athletics. One of the high points of the season was the Bears' triumph over Mannington in the first game of the year. Mannington, always a strong rival, went down to the score of 6-0. In the third quarter Fairmont pulled a new trick out of the bag by a deceiving shift of the backs far to the left. Fairmont worked such deceptive passes and runs intermingled that Mannington was soon completely demoralized. Then by a pass from Dusty Brown to Reed and a quick smash by Kosko the ball was carried over the line for the deciding score. Our highest high point was gained one Saturday afternoon at South Side Park when the scrappy 'little Polar Bears ran around, passed over, and plunged through the much heavier team of East Side Yellow Jackets to win by the decisive score of 20-6. The Yellow Jackets backed by heavy odds, went down nobly before a driving fighting Fairmont machine. Witt, Hartlieb, and Kosko did most of the ball carrying while McLeary, Christner and Reed shone on the defense. The Bears retained only two titles this year, that of being City Champions and that of being fighters. WRESTLING I' If I' 'I' Wrestling was newly given its pl-ace as an active sport in our school this year by Mr. Ludwig. By the enthusiasm with which the students greeted this sport it is ex- pected to become -a major activity in Fairmont High. The mat men lost their first match to a crack aggregation from East Fairmont High where wrestling has been a popular sport for many years. Our grapplers then journeyed to Weston and there succeeded in defeating the Weston High wrestlers by a score of 23-20. Weston High wrestlers had been undefeated Valley champions for three successive years. Our grunt and groan men, gaining strength, next defeated Harrisville 20-18. Following that they were again defeated by East Fairmont High in a return match. In a match at Fairmont High gym, they were defeated by a determined Weston High squad. Their last match ended in defeat for Fairmont at the hands of Harrisville. The wrestlers are: Louis Cimino, Robert Martin, Anthony Moffa, Merle Amos, Victor Tamuty, Anthony Yanero, Danny Galluci, John Deison, Dale Cottrill, Mervin Martin, Jildo Zaccagni, Welty Goode, Bud Sheltman, Lester Karl, Arnold Stewart, Joe Shultz, and Managers David Currey and Lawrence Abbot. Many boys answered Coach Dawson's call for early practice and' trained vigorously for the season. These boys, though many of them did not make the team, made the team possible. The Bears' season was featured by many thriling games, some successes and some defeats. Probably the most satisfying of Fairmont's triumphs were the two decisive trouncings which were given to East Fairmont. The first game which we won by a score of 24-15 was played on the enemy's floor. The Bears showed superior passing, accurate shooting, and airtight defense. The second game, played on our own floor, was taken by the Bears with a score of 27-16. The Bears showed the same superiority throughout. Fairmont squeezed out two wins over Farmington which were featured by good teamwork and headwork. The first game was won by a score of 24-22 and the second by a score of 36-35. The Farmers always furnish plenty of competition for the Polar Bears. It may be mentioned here that they furnished a little too much in the sectional tournament, 'putting the Bears out in the first round. A thriller was dropped to Shinnston when the Shinnston boys came back strong in the last quarter to lead Fairmont by one point at the final gun, the score being 21-20. The Bears made up for this near the end of the season when they downed Shinnston by the score of 29-25. Following th sectional tournament the Bears engaged in a city championship series with Saint Peters High School, both teams having defeated East Fairmont. After winning this, the first game 'by a score of 26-25 and the second by a score of 30-20, the Bears became unquestionably the City Champions. BCXING I I I I In the spirit of enthusiasm and the will to develop self-confidence and alertness a 'boxing team was formed at our high school. Under the direction of Mr. Hardy this team progressed rapidly to a fine record of four victories and one defeat. We hope and believe that boxing, along with wrestling, will create much interest in Fairmont High in the future. Matches were scheduled with the various high schools near Fairmont. The first match with Blacksville High resulted in a trouncing for Blacksville. The feature of the match was a knock-out by Leroy Frankman, speedy and hard puncher of the Bantamweight class. The second match, scheduled with Clarksburg Athletic Club, was won. on a forfeit. Blacksville was en- countered in a return match at Blacksville and another victory for Fairmont mittmen. The West Virginia University Freshmen, undefeated up to the time of their match with Fairmont High, were on the losing end 4-2. Freeman Campbell featured with a knock- out. The last match of the season, advertised as the State Championship match, was won by Richwood on close decisions, Frankman and Sestito earning technical knock- outs in their bouts. The team consists of Orester Cornelio, Bud Hamilton, Arthur Brown, Leroy Frank- man, Joe Testa, Joe Sestito, James Dotts, James Wilburn, Marshall Lupo, Freeman Campbell, John Pica, Harold Ballengee, Julio Tutalo, Managers James Delligatti and Albert Collins. We lose Dotts, Pica, Frankman, and Lupo by graduation. Page Seventy-five S42 til Marie 3523925 se S115 SZ? CHEER LEADERS ROSE NASH REEDIE MILLER FRANCES MILLER FRED CHIODO INTRAMURALS il- -K' -I' 'X' Intramural sports were brought into existence this year by Mr. Ludwig. Many boys are enlisting in the different sports as they come along in order to Win an intra-mural letter. Any boy may win a letter by earning eight hundred points. Points are given for participation in games and additional points for winning games. The first intramurals this year were handball, both singles and doubles. So great was the number enrolled for these games, although they are new to Fairmont Senior High School, that some time was required to play off these tournaments. This contest was followed by basketball which was divided into two divisions, those who were under one hundred thirty pounds, and those who were over one hundred thirty. This arrangement made the sport accessible and fair for all the boys in school. After these sports, volley ball, ping pong, and shuffle board began and consumed the interests of the boys for the rest of the year. Page Seventy su' .f.,', ri- . I. .J fy. '. . f . . Because Judge Ryerson had the name of giving unduly long prison sen- tences, no demand for ransom was made. The motive for the crime was supposed to be revenge. The identity of the kidnapper remained a mystery until practically the last moment of the play. False clues were followed up, and suspected people proved their innocence. Harkness, who had been called in to solve the mystery fell in love with the J udge's daughter. The surprising confession of Harkness, the kidnapper, after all suspicion had been diverted from him, afforded a strong dramatic climax.
