Sociol studies depcirtment odds two courses to curriculum The social studies department was enlarged this year with the addition ot psychology and modern European cul- tures, both semester courses. Psychology dealt with the study ot human behavior. The popularity ot this course decreased sociology enrollments. ln Mr. Joe l'laven's modern European cultures class, the emphasis was on a better understanding ot the people and events shaping today's world. lnstead ot an exam, students turned in a semes- ter proiect. The civics classes studied the recent Presidential election along with the democratic government ot the United States. Sociology classes dealt with the problems ot everyday lite. American history classes studied the past events leading to the development ot the United States. The world history classes studied man's progress through the ages in building civilization. The consumer economics classes sur- veyed the economic system ot the United States. Moth Dept. otters vciried selections to Eost students Algebra l students learned to extend the tundamentals ot arithmetic to gen- eral numbers. Pupils learned the basics ot equations, inequalities, and graphs ot linear equations. Algebra ll students turther developed problem-solving skills. The course tocused on more advanced ideas, including exponents, logarithms, and quadratic equations. By presenting their work on the board, geometry students had the chance to explain the problems and tind their own mistakes. Mr. Dennis Pris- er's geometry classes took a break trom written examinations and had an oral one instead. East's math department ottered the student who desired a greater under- standing ot math a more enriched pro- gram. Trigonometry and Algebra III reviewed algebra and also emphasized relationships among the tunctions. Tri- gonometry and solid geometry students explored solid and analytic geometry and an introduction to calculus. Advanced Math IV concentrated on a thorough study ot calculus.
