Eost bond provides colortul entertoinment during holttime On August 2l, at 8:00 in the morn- ing, the Fairmont East Band got together tor the tirst time, beginning a two-week period ot ditticult practices. During these two weeks, the upperclass- men, who already knew the basics ot marching, helped the sophomores learn how to march. The band's tirst public appearance was on Labor Day, when they marched down the streets ot Kettering in the annual Floliday-at-Home Parade. Then on the same evening, they pertormed at Fairmont Stadium Foreman Field. Atter school started, the band enter- tained the crowds at the tootball games during halttime each week. These per- tormances were learned and pertected in nine hours ot practice during sixth period every day and atter school on Mondays and Wednesdays. This year, the band's pertormances ranged trom strictly precision marching to poking tun at the political parties, while playing the latest popular and rock songs. The band also changed their pre-game, entering trom the sidelines and torming a tlying wedge. As the marching band dispersed, the concert band took shape with approxi- mately I lO members. The concert band rehearsed during sixth period every day, preparing tor their two yearly con- certs. The winter concert was in Febru- ary and the spring concert was in May. From the concert band stemmed the Pep Band, a select group ot musicians who played at the wrestling meets, gymnastics meets, and the basketball games. They provided musical cheers and music throughout the games and at halttime. Upper Right: Atter a long night ot playing at the UD. Arena, the Pep Band tinally has a chance to relax. Right: Senior John Meckstroth plays his trumpet during one ot many halttime shows. pn l l 1
