Athletics ot Eost improve steodily throughout decode Striving tor a victorious season, the East tootball team in l972 won its tirst WOL championship. Falcon cross country and traclc teams consistently placed high in their meets. During the past ten years, cross country continually placed tirst or second in the WOL. They continued this tradition when they placed tirst tor the I972 sea- son. ln l97l Falcon traclc team tied tor tirst in the WOL, placed second in the district, and tinished tourth at the sec- tional. Falcon gymnasts traditionally tought tor the state title. East teams placed in state competition eight times, marked by tour state championships. Throughout its tirst ten years, East had a strong baseball team. Atter hav- ing won the league title in l967, the team went on to win second place in district competition. ln l97l Falcon dia- mondmen won the state runner-up title. Girlls sports at East always included several winning teams. For the tirst tour years the sottball team had an undef teated record. I Www Course ot studies presents vdriety to Ecist students ln I963 Fairmont East ottered a lim- ited choice ot programs. During the past ten years, many new courses, such as multi-media survey, photography, and psychology were added. Within the past ten years, several class requirements changed. Civics, sociology, and economics opened to underclassmen. Students were allowed to talce American history any year. Sen- ior English became an elective instead ot being required. Possibly the biggest change since l963 involved graduation requirements. Seniors ot the class ot I973 needed I8lf2 credits to graduate instead ot the l7lf2 credits which were previously required. Students could also graduate at the end ot their iunior year, atter summer school, or at the end ot the tirst semes- ter ot their senior year.
