Folcon victories result of strong offense ond defense Combining both offense and defense, the I972 Fairmont East football team achieved its best season record. Throughout the season, the Falcons compiled nine wins against only one loss. ln many victories the East defense was a key factor. Particularly outstand- ing defensive efforts went into the games with Stebbins and Centerville. The lron Falcons allowed only IO4 points to be scored against them, establishing a new East record. By scoring 229 points, the offensive unit totaled more points than any other team in Fairmont East's history. With both a strong rushing and a strong passing attack, the Falcons averaged 4.9 yards per play for 2473 yards in total offense, also a new East record. ' With IO78 yards in total offense, East quarterback lvlike Wagner accounted for almost half of the team's total yardage. He set a record for touchdown passes in a season - 9 - and tied the record for touchdown pas- ses in a single game. First win over West no tluke Troy overtime tontostic Fairmont Stadium, Fourman Field, was dedicated shortly betore the two Kettering rivals met in an important WQL game. Both teams played out- standing detensive tootball, but East's ottensive play won the game. Atter a scoreless tirst quarter, East drove 72 yards in 9 plays to go out in tront 7-O with Mike Wagner's scoring on a quarterback sneak. The halt ended with East in tront 7-O. On their tirst possession ot the third quarter, East marched 86 yards in I2 plays, scoring on a Wagner to Terry Tamaska pass. Bob Landis kicked the extra point and East led I4-O. Early in the tourth quarter, Terry Tamaska, aided with a block trom Bob Metzler, put the game out ot reach by scoring his second touchdown on a run ot eight yards. Bob Landis added a tield goal tor the tinal score ot 24-O. The East defensive team allowed West only 67 yards tor the entire game. This game proved that East's stunning win last year was no tluke. ln one ot the most exciting high school games ever played Troy ruined Fairmont East's bid tor a pertect season by beating the Falcons 36-33 in a triple overtime. East's Most Valuable Player ot the Year, quarterback Mike Wagner, received many outstanding awards this season: Quarterback - lst team All WQL, Player ot the Year - WQL, Journal Herald and Dayton Daily News All-Area Quarterback, Southwestern Qhio District Quarterback, UPI-All State Ist team Quarterback, and one ot the top IOO high school tootball players in the country as selected by 'Coach and Athlete Magazine' and Sunkist Growers.
