prexidmt peter mmmartz'no as one year merges into an- other, it is difhcult to encom- pass broad movements into the hnite limits of the academic year. yet, It would be correct to say that this is the academic year in which faitleigh clickin- son university became a na- tional institution. this process, of course, has been taking place for some years but two things evolved which made this move- ment a definite one. the flrst was the launching of wroxton college in england. out first group of undergraduates went over to wroxton for their semester abroad. as fat as we know, wtoxton is the only com- plete campus owned and oper- ated by an american university. the second broad movement was that faitleigh dickinson university adopted the principle that it would become a dormi- tory college, and embarked on a ten-yeat program of build- ing residence halls for its students. other programs were also adding to this general picture: archeological projects, the in- creased knowledge of our pro- fessional journals, the inter- national conferences, the visit- ing profeSsors, the step-up re- search, the expansion of librar- ies and of laboratories. when we consider that our university, as such, is only ten years old, we can take pride in our progress. does it mean that we may become smug and complacent? of course not. it means that We have to work much harder to attain Even higher standards. peter sammartino 33

campm dean: dean lambert rutberford dean galanti teamed? dean pratt a university education can- not teach a man how to inane ence people, or guarantee his becoming a corporation execu- tive, or grant him limitless hap- piness. much of our practical knowledge, gained at great ex- pense, is almost obsolete by the time we are expected to use it, so quick are the develop- ments in the different flelds of knowledge. a university, however, should be able to impart to its stu- dents a certain sinewy capacity for thinking things through; a patience for long views; a sense of moral and intellecmal order; and a manner of life which helps the person to ap- proach every task and relation- ship with dignity and humility. by the time he graduates, a senior should have some feel- ing for what it means to be truly human. dean lambcrt madiwn 85
