ANNA SHEPHERD Lyndon R. Johnson, President of the United States, said in an interview recently that if he were a young nan choosing a vocation or profession, he would elect to be a preacher, a teacher, or a nolitician. The reason for selecting one of these fields,he said', is because in these areas lie the opportunity to do the greatest good for one’s countrv and for man- kind. Few neople have the opoortunity, or good fortune to render a life-time of service to the boys and girls as has !rs. Anna Sheoherd. Mrs. Shepherd, after serving three years in the rural schools of this county, became a teacher in the Fairland Schools in 1926. For thirty- eight years she has devoted her energies to her chosen profession, giving full measure of herself, her talents, and her interests, to those who came her way. In anoreciation of her -untiring service, and as an expression of our love for her loyal devotion, her influence upon the student bodies, her maintenance of high scholastic stand- ards, we humbly dedicate to her the 1964 ECHO. The Staff DMINISTRATION BOARD OF EDUCATION V ayne LaDuke Elmer Kinsey Paul Crafton, Clerk Gene Gardner, V. P. Berle Campbell, Pres. OUR SCHOOL Education was provided for the children of Fairland prior to Statehood. A frame school house was built in 1893, not far from the site of the present high school building. This building burned in 1915 and was replaced with a brick structure which served until 1942, when the present high school building was erected. In 1956, the grade school building was consumed by fire and was replaced with our pre- sent grade school building. Prior to the public schools, educational opportunities were provided by subscription schools and Indian Schools. Fairland graduated its first high school seniors, a class of four, in 1920. Since this date, each year other larger classes have received the honor. Guarding the south entrance of our caranus is a large white archway. Through this por- tal has passed many students. Some have become teachers, doctors, dentists, social workers, politicians, farmers, and representatives of many other professions and vocations, while some have become oblivious. The community, under the leadership of the 3oard of Education, has furnished the phy- sical facilities, and provided the staff. The Administration, teachers, and other personnel have given untiringly of their energies and their professional ability. Finished products are what the individual student wants it to be. One endowed with de- termination,' can prenare himself for college or life in this changing world as well or better in our school system as a boy or girl in any school in America. Opportunities are yours, you are preparing for your life. If you give less than your best, you suffer the loss, your community suffers, and society (perhaps worldwide) is less strong. Seniors, have you put forth your best efforts? What are your plans for tomorrow? Will graduation be the end of formal education or a beginning of specialization? To you and those who follow, we wish you well. May life for you be more meaningful be- cause of your experience here. FACULTY C.T.
