SONG OF THE OPEN ROAD A foot and light-hearted I take to the Open Road, Healthy, free, the world before me, The long brown path before me leading wherever I choose. Henceforth I ask not good fortune, I myself am good-fortune. Strong and content I travel the open road. Walt Whitman

IN MEMORIAM PHILLIPS A. NOYES 1899-1979 “Rejoice O young people while you are young, and let your heart be glad in the days of thy youth. Follow the ways of thy heart, the vision of thine eyes ...” Ecclesiastes Mr. Noyes was educated at Dartmouth College, Harvard University, and the University of Grenoble. A teacher of Latin, French, Spanish, and German, he began his career at Cushing Academy where, he was proud to say, Bette Davis was one of his prize pupils. In 1949 he came to Fairhaven High School where he remained until his retirement in 1961. After that time, he became the most welcomed, respected, and loved substitute teacher of all time. In June 1977, the Foreign. Language Department instituted in the name of Mr. Noyes an annual award of appreciation to a senior foreign language student. Each recipient of this award must demonstrate those qualities of Mr. Noyes that we continue to admire; a strong ability and sincere desire to learn a foreign language with a sense of joie de vivre, reliability, enthusiasm, and a sensitivity of love for his fellow man.

WlTichever path you choose, however, success will be yours only if you invest an extra effort and rely not on good fortune, but on yourselves. To the class of 1980,1 wish health and happiness.
