: ' A ■ THE HUTTLESTONIAN 1980 FAIRHA VEN HIGH SCHOOL Eairhaven, Massachusetts Volume LIV 2 IN MEMORIAM PHILLIPS A. NOYES 1899-1979 “Rejoice O young people while you are young, and let your heart be glad in the days of thy youth. Follow the ways of thy heart, the vision of thine eyes ...” Ecclesiastes Mr. Noyes was educated at Dartmouth College, Harvard University, and the University of Grenoble. A teacher of Latin, French, Spanish, and German, he began his career at Cushing Academy where, he was proud to say, Bette Davis was one of his prize pupils. In 1949 he came to Fairhaven High School where he remained until his retirement in 1961. After that time, he became the most welcomed, respected, and loved substitute teacher of all time. In June 1977, the Foreign. Language Department instituted in the name of Mr. Noyes an annual award of appreciation to a senior foreign language student. Each recipient of this award must demonstrate those qualities of Mr. Noyes that we continue to admire; a strong ability and sincere desire to learn a foreign language with a sense of joie de vivre, reliability, enthusiasm, and a sensitivity of love for his fellow man. SONG OF THE OPEN ROAD A foot and light-hearted I take to the Open Road, Healthy, free, the world before me, The long brown path before me leading wherever I choose. Henceforth I ask not good fortune, I myself am good-fortune. Strong and content I travel the open road. Walt Whitman PRINCIPAL’S ADDRESS In the months ahead, you will make the decision to continue your education or to enter the world of work. Because both offer so many different paths, these choices will vary. WlTichever path you choose, however, success will be yours only if you invest an extra effort and rely not on good fortune, but on yourselves. To the class of 1980,1 wish health and happiness. Bob leaves Zorba ... hanging. Everyone leaves “The Pub” feeling good! Anne D. leaves her size V i sneakers to Kathy S. The boys (Mike, Matt, Kirk, and Don) leave the B.P.W. to Drew, reluctantly. Kim leaves Lee without a source of gossip! Anna, Beth, Cathy, Randy, Saura, Kris, and Kenny leave Mrs. Boyce in peace. Moe leaves her shoes to anyone who can fill them. Debbie, Moe, and Carol leave Mrs. Waltz in peace. Debbie Lanham leaves Mr. Albritton’s dictation to anyone who can understand him. While in Germany, she enjoyed playing soccer and, thanks to the American Field Service, Jennifer was able to share a different cul¬ ture and make many long-lasting friendships. 76 FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS Fernando Rodrigo Olmedo is our American Field Service student from Para¬ guay. He arrived in the summer of 79 from his hometown of Asuncion and met his host family, the Rogers. During his short stay here, Fernando has visited Mont¬ real and Ontario, Canada. His active part in the band and the A.F.S. club will be remembered by all his classmates. We were fortunate to have two foreign students at F.H.S. Gabriela Guzman came to us from Valdivia, Chile, and has been spending the year with the Ransom family. She’s been involved in chorus and the A.F.S. club. We shall never forget “Gaby” as Countess Dracula in the Speech and Drama play. We hope Fernando and Gabriela, will have many memo¬ ries to take home with them and we wish them only the best for the future. 77 THE CHEER¬ LEADERS’ DANCE The Cheerleaders’ dance was held on Homecoming Day, Octo¬ ber 20, 1979.
