PRINCIPAL’S ADDRESS I would like to commend the class of 1979 for selecting as its theme the poem entitled “Don’t Give Up” by Phoebe Cary because the greatest lessons learned and retained are from defeat rather than victory. Often, victors can only see their immediate success; consequently, they fail to see what they must do to prepare themselves for future conflicts. While the victors are gloating, the losers have to prepare themselves for the next contest. The losers must find out the reasons for their loss, they must make necessary adjustments to improve, and they must finally execute to the best of their abilities all that they have learned from defeat. Individuals who learn from their defeats will always be the “winner”. 2

Though young birds in flying, fall, Still their wings grow stronger; And the next time they can keep Up a little longer.
