TABLE OF CONTENTS VOLUME LIII PRINCIPAL’S ADDRESS ADMINISTRATION THEME DEDICATION FACULTY SENIORS T m C a i {m . nB igp r V W- 3| | ATHLETICS ACTIVITIES UNDERCLASSMEN ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS ■- PRINCIPAL’S ADDRESS I would like to commend the class of 1979 for selecting as its theme the poem entitled “Don’t Give Up” by Phoebe Cary because the greatest lessons learned and retained are from defeat rather than victory. Often, victors can only see their immediate success; consequently, they fail to see what they must do to prepare themselves for future conflicts. While the victors are gloating, the losers have to prepare themselves for the next contest. The losers must find out the reasons for their loss, they must make necessary adjustments to improve, and they must finally execute to the best of their abilities all that they have learned from defeat. Individuals who learn from their defeats will always be the “winner”. 2 Principal: Stanley J. Grabiec Vice-Principal: Carlton Albritton ADMINISTRATION Guidance Director: Paul McCabe Athletic Director: Melvin Entin James B. Lanagan Jr. Virginia Kowal Cletus Malloy 3 DON’T GIVE UP If you’ve tried and not won Never stop for crying; All that’s great and good is done Just be patient trying. Though young birds in flying, fall, Still their wings grow stronger; And the next time they can keep Up a little longer. Though the sturdy Oak has known Many a blast that bowed her, She has risen again, and grown Loftier and prouder. If by easy work you beat, Who the more will prize you? Gaining victory from defeat, — That’s the test that tries you! PHOEBE CARY 5 As we think about our years at F.H.S. we fondly recall many friends and events that have made our experiences here happy ones. This book is dedicated to those special memories which each individual has formed during his high school years. These memories will always be carried with our class and will enable us to look back and relive some of our favorite times at Fairhaven High School. The Class of 1979 7 Fairhaven High has been traditionally known as a leader in scholastic advancement. The original school was opened in 1852. Our present High School, opened in 1906, was generously given to the town by Henry Huttleston Rogers. Under the roof, in these rooms. . . generations of living people, many now sc attered to all parts of our country, and, indeed, to our world. . .have learned and friended and dreamed their destinies. Her bub¬ bling, friendly personality as well as her involvement at F.H.S. will be remembered warmly by all her classmates. 94 SB Following two years of involvement in the Fairhaven Chapter of The American Field Service, Geoff Ransom has been spending this past year in Switzerland where he is completing a Swiss High School Equivilency. Upon his return to the states, Geoff plans to go to college and major in languages. While Geoff was at Fairha¬ ven High, he was involved in numerous activities. He competed on the football team for two years and was a member of the track team during his sophomore year. He was active in the stage band as a drummer, the triple quartet, the French Club, the Student Council, and was our class president for the past three years. Thanks to The American Field Service Study Abroad, Geoff has experienced and will be able to share with us a new culture. 95 96 97 98 REMEMBER. • • The Band’s new uniforms Early morning gossip The long walk up . . . 99 CLASS OFFICERS SUE HIRST VICE-PRES. The Class of 1979 leaves . . . 101 Class Prophecy Looking out over the massive crowd of the twentieth reunion of the 1979 graduates of Fairhaven High School, we see that our classmates have travelled many different roads, but tonight our paths have con¬ verged for an update of the past years. We have gathered at the Larch Avenue Auditorium (otherwise known as the girl’s gym.) Our main course was prepared by famous chefs: Barry Correia, Steve Jason, and David Morris. Cakes for desserts were decorated by Lori Gifford, Nancy Johnson, Carol Viveiros, and Donna Fleurent. The gym has been beautifully decorated by Janet Jupin whose next project is Amy Furta- do’s house. Murals on the wall were painted by David Goulart, Linda Pina, Desi Jesus, and Tracey White. The entertainment was provided by a group of former students. Linda Britto was lead singer and she was accompanied by Randy Britto, Bob Teixeira, Joe Mello, Brenda Bala, Kevin Mach, and Joe Rapoza. Dancing all night to the music were Tammy Blanchard, Jackie DaCosta, Carolyn Fleurent, and Steve Men- donca. Stand up comedians were Debby Borges and Carl Fragata. Joann Medhaug and Kathy Winey were scheduled to join us tonight, but due to previous singing engagements were unable to attend. Many celebri¬ ties were also present. JoAnn Rogers along with her co-host Cathy Camacho from their talk show “Today’s Women Speak Out” entertained us with many funny antidotes from their past shows. Michelle Benoit took time out from her toothpaste commercial, while Sherri Frye and Ilya Alvheim flew down in Jim D’Anjou’s 747 after finishing their newest shampoo commercials. Also present were Charlene Arruda, Shaun Cassidy’s agent and John Pimental, Farrah Fawcett’s bodyguard. We find that many of our classmates have entered the sports world. Chris Wright, Ronnie Tavares, Jeff Faria, and Phil Stanley are skating with the Bruins, while Sue Ashley does the commentary. Sue Hirst is now playing second base for the Red Sox, while Jeff Casey is her back-up. Chris Roberts often interviews the Red Sox and just recently interviewed Sandy Seguin, the current Red Sox manager. Tom Hemingway, 3 time Cy Young winner, is also present. Fairhaven also is well represented in the world of football. In last week’s game, which was broadcasted by Wayne Toussaint, former high school teammates Peter Gordon, David Burke, Tony Fonseca, and Tony Almeida met in the Super Bowl. Refereeing the game were Bruce David and former cheerleader Abbie Clough. Another former cheerleader, Terry Jesus, is now the den mother for the Dallas Cowgirls. Motorcycle race driver, George Quirk; pro golfers, Ken Santos and the Bes¬ sette brothers; basketball legend, Bobby Gonet; chess champion, Diane Sylvia; field hockey coach, Kathy Collins; and softball player, Stephanie Quintin were also among the pro-athletes present. At the corner table we see the owners of Bonwitt Tellers, Lori Richard and Doug Valerio. Sharon Frias is their chief designer with Jayne Smith and Jeff Simmons modeling her newest fashions. Kris Kochanek is her shrewd retail manager while Jeanine Poulin is the financial adviser. Robin Lopez supplies the current ideas in tee-shirts, while Darnell Cardoza sends back designs from Paris on the latest European creations. At the next table sit the proud owners of the new salon HAIR. The co-owners are Nancy Mello and Sherri Rezendes. Their latest creations are modeled by Robin Cardoza and Heidi Hodges. They are still trying to find the right dye to change Red Dubois to Neil Brown. Present also were many business people including Betsy Sandel, owner of a shoe store; Robin Tomkiew- icz, bank teller; Kevin Metheny, oil company owner; Peter Whiting, owner of a chain of gas stations; Pat Cyr, owner of Benny’s; Laurie Forrester, manager of the Coppertone Company; Jay Chamberlain, owner of the YMCA; and Eric Hansen, owner of the prosperous McDonald’s restaurants. A favorite place for the people of the sports world to meet is Wayne Bergeron’s Health Club where Bobby Benoit is the club’s number one masseur. While the businessmen find pleasure at Joe Alves’ nightclub where Cheryl Bedard laughs at Kim Bernard’s sick jokes and Bill Burns’ teacher impersonations. Frequent visitors to the club include: Bill Crowley, Wayne Zuendel, John Pendergast, Brian Faltus, John Rucker, Vin Shurtleff, Jeff Borges, and David Watt. Following an evening at the club, oftentimes everyone 102 stops off at the former Dana’s Dogs which is now Kathy’s Kilbasa, owned by Kathy Szwaja. Entering Larch Avenue we now see famed nuclear physicist David Koczwera and his assistant Marilyn Espindola who are still trying to make it snow in the summer. Since many of our classmates have entered the medical profession, Kevin McQuade has had a booming business in the field of embalming. The Fairhaven Free Clinic has just recently found a new home designed by Rick Taylor and built by Kevin Brodo, Inc. The staff of the clinic includes Donna Souza, Pam Johnson, Cathy Marien, Francine Nolin, and head nurse Jackie Bergeron. In the research laboratory, Deb¬ bie Souza is still searching for a cure for the common cold. Many of our classmates have moved to the country. Working as veterinarians we find: Nancy Mitchell, Wanda Bento, Kathy Correia, Gwen Faunce and Tony Sobrol. Kathy Lavallee, Sandy Bissonnette, Lisa Labrie and Lauren Maclean have joined forces and bought a horse farm. Shawn Elliot, Mike Almeida, Dave Machado, and Ray Markey are forest rangers in the same forest in which lumberjack Jeff Griffith makes frequent appearances. We hear a disturbance in the corner of the room and find Lisa Devlin, a noted politician, and Paula Mur¬ ray, attorney at law, debating with Doug Medeiros while Bob Mayo nods his head in agreement. Janet Souza, Paula’s partner, along with Barbie Shope compete against the tyrannical dynasty of Steve Lom¬ bardo and Norry Alves. Many of our classmates now reside in Washington. Laurie Despres and Dawn Stowers preach on the Capitol’s steps. In foreign relations we find Geoff Ransom, Bonnie Brault, and Kerstin Brandes. The Presi¬ dent’s Air Force 1 has a lovely host of stewardesses in Cheryl Mont, Kathy Demanche, and Laura Kearly. Handling the Presidential accounts is Joanne Lemaire, U.S. Treasurer. Many of our classmates have stayed close to home. Happily married are Cheryl Blanchard, Diane Breault, Janice Boucher, June Bradshaw, Robert Palmer, Lisa Cathcart, Pam Sylvia, Miriam Gamache, Olinda De Mello, Melissa Slowik, and Cathy Arruda. Area businessman Bob Costa is holding wet T-shirt contests. Some contestants have been Randi Isaksen, Gail Jarvis, Jeff Marden, Randy Jackson, Linda Aad- land, Warren Robinson, and Terri Duarte. Many of our classmates travel upon the high seas. Ron Rock captains Ken Eleniefsky’s fishing fleet. On board during the last trip were marine biologists Scott Viera and Dave Gonsalves and deep sea divers Kevin Rocha and Frank Travers. Sticking close to home are Patty Camacho, Sue Bo ulay, Joyce Brillon, Darlene Hancock, and Mike Fisher. Novelists Esther Dias and Jan Pittsley are hard at work. Sue Crompton still tries to solve her own riddles. Phil Ashley is running the Wallpaper Company. Jimmy Crowley is still selling tickets at the bus station. Richie Canastra is looking for the fountain of youth. Valerie Cardoza continues to wait until she wins the lottery. Alan Hsia has become the new manager at Shaw’s and Lianne Frate’s is his assistant. Deb Eleniefsky owns Weber’s Outerwear. Tim Diggle, Mo Laughlin, Mary Flood, Becky Hunley, and Ann Goulet have travelled cross-country several times. Now we take the nostalgic stroll back through the halls of FHS. Chris Fouquette is the new vice princi¬ pal, Sue Bender teaches gym, A1 Alphonse is head custodian, Jay Fernandes is still taking Jr. English, Shftwn Gallagher is the head of the foreign language department, Janice Reedy is Mrs. Martin’s replace¬ ment, Jorge Oliveira is the new Mr. Boyce, Ann-Marie Roderiques is the Athletic Director, and Lynne Waddington has replaced Mrs. Paiva. Covering this great event are Boston Globe reporters Adelaide Santos, Karen Seney, Virginia Allen, Mar¬ garet Alexander, and Donna Dwelly. A special issue of Time Magazine will be published next month by editor Cathie Wolan. And last but not least we find Matt Mello taking pictures of. . . 103 THE HUTTLESTONIAN Class of 1979 Co-Editors-in-Chief: Barbie Shope FACULTY Joanne Lemaire — Ed. ACTIVITIES Sue Ashley — Ed. It’s a gold plated megaphone dangling from a dainty chain. It’s buying all the latest fashions, then baby sitting. When the sun goes down with a flaming ray And the dear friends have to part? Well, this is the end of a perfect day, Near the end of a journey, too; But it leaves a thought that is big and strong, With a wish that is kind and true, For mem ’ry has painted this perfect day With colors that never fade, And we find at the end of a perfect day, The soul of a friend we’ve made.
