THE HUTTLESTONIAN 1975 FAIRHAVEN HIGH SCHOOL VOLUME XLVIV Fair haven, Massachusetts Table of Contents Theme Dedication Principal ' s Address Faculty Activities Sports Underclassmen Seniors Advertisements v— 1 H -wr f ■ ? ' Cmii g- | ? S5® BikI ’ ' S BKiiL A Different Drummer Why should we be in such desperate haste to succeed, and in such desperate enterprises. If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which h e hears however measured or far away. Henry David Thoreau Our HUTTLESTONIAN is focused on individuality. Therefore, we have dedicated it to someone we feel is a true individual. Few realize the time she has devoted in making this yearbook possible. Her thoughtfulness, her kind¬ ness, her devotion to perfection, and her warmth have made this book a spe¬ cial one. The Class of 1 975 would like to thank Mrs. Margaret Lister for all the help she has given us. STANLEY J. GRABIEC Principal Principal ' s Address The Class of 1975 has witnessed many problems during the past school year. It was indeed a sad day for this nation and its history to see the President of the United States resign his elected office as a result of the Watergate scandals. In addition, our chaotic eco¬ nomic conditions at home and abroad make us wonder about the future. It is good that the theme of this year’s HUTTLESTONIAN accentuates the need for individ¬ uality in our complex society and I, therefore, charge the Class of 1975 to adopt this theme keeping foremost in mind a high moral consciousness and sincerity in future endeavors. On behalf of the faculty, undergraduates, staff, and administration we wish you all hap¬ piness, success, and health. Stanley J. Grabiec 5 Administration STANLEY J. GRABIEC Principal Guidance DR. Nor do I know the moment when the passion seized me. But for forty years and more I have been mesmerized, enchanted and bewitched. Into a vast devotion. II Perhaps first. . . it was sheer loveliness that dazzled . . . Clean marble arch and dark oak . . . vaulting up and up. Gargoyles leering, iron work lacing. Myriad windows shot with color. All these can make the senses reel. III A lighted clock that seized the skies, A harmony of copper, brass and warm wood-cutting, A spaciousness that gentled the spirit, A twisted knot of grandeur past. . . and hope prophetic AW these could well command devotion. IV And then there was the pull of lore attending. Tradition ' s steady building with the years. Magnificent tales of generous opulence About the one who made it all. Who could escape a fascination? V And then THEY came . . . the live ones . . . stepping through the years. The shouting, questing, jeering, grumbling pack of youthful heirs and heiresses. Ready to know their inheritance ... to seize it or reject it; The good little sturdy kids; the bad little vandal kids. The quick ones and the slow ones . . . the busy and the languid. And they kept coming and laid hold upon me. VI One day the boys wore baggy pants and knobby sweaters; The girls wore dimity and voile with satin sashes; One day the skirts fell long; one day the skirts shot up! A moment of crew cuts there was . . . then One of grubby beards and braggadocio moustaches: One could not help but be intrigued. VII I ' ve seen them all. . . the saddle shoes . . . the clogs. The kerchief knotted tight beneath a gentle chin. The neckline scooping low before the following eye abashed. And midriff bare . . . above protesting stretch of denim, faded blue. At these I have expostulated or laughed or sucked in shocked breath! VIII Those many, many boys and girls . . . over the years I see them Sitting in serries rows through a brief blending of our days. A little while, our minds, excited and attuned . . . fused and sparkled! Then always they’d go . . . and some were never seen again. Yet in our meeting had been a comradeship extraordinary. IX There has always been a sharing Within the confines of those walls. Wild and whirling ideas . . . fluid and molten . . . tossed about from mind to mind. Caught a moment; stroked a moment. Then, half rueful . . . cast aside; And the youthful dreams . . . largely inferred . . . often not spoken. Some to bloom, but most to die Are as a fragrance in the memories of that place. X Frozen stark upon the eyeball lie clear scenes from all the years; Curtains parting at the play . . . climaxing days of busy magic. Long blue lines of caps and gowns, and solemn faces wet with tears! Expressions stolid, rapt, bored or enchanted. As poor bedeviled Hamlet offered up his answers! XI Yet not only the young were party to the pact that bound me. For . . . peripheral to their restless tide, exhausting and demanding . . . My colleagues . . . fellow to my enchantment. . . walked with me. And we have joined hands. Yes, we have delighted in each other, and sustained each other Over many days. XII Now, before ... I told you that I did not know why it has come to be, My deep, enduring passion for this school From 21 to 68 are many years to measure. And I, too, have sometimes felt the temptings and the urge to be unfaithful! Yet under the clock tower it has ever been warm and good. XIII — Therefore, I have abided, and gloried in the dark oak sweeping up and up. And in the joyful, wistful, searching, troubled faces of my children And I have found the chance to BE myself and KNOW myself and GIVE myself. And been allowed to see the sudden splendid light of understanding Flare ... in the blue eyes and the brown. As a new concept dawned. XIV I do not know what lies ahead now . . . away from the clock tower. Where the myriad windows never flash their colors; But there will be beauty, gentleness, and friending a-plenty . . . REMEMBERED, To warm the days to come Though fate have icy fingers! 4 + So it is not really strange, you know, when I say that I have had a love affair with a school. For that is how it is. Each member was assigned an elderly person to visit once a week and to assist when needed. Members also held the annual Christmas party for the children of St. Mary ' s Home. 19 Student Council The Student Council had a lot of work to catch up on this year. Because the organization was in debt at the outset, the members had to work hard as a team to get back on their feet. Led by President Jack Bellotti, this group showed what hard work and determination can do. SAE Students Active for Education made up of former Future Teacher Club members is an eager and willing organization, aiding the community and area schools in many ways. The club’s officers were President: Susan Medeiros, Vice President: Martha Wolanski, Secretary: Susan Nolin, Treasurer: Eneida Sandel, and club advisor. Miss Trafton. A fashion show is held each year and all the girls get an opportunity to model their creation. 23 Library Aides Library Aides, one of F.H.S. ' s most vital organizations, organizes the shelves of the school library. AV Club Audio Visual is perhaps one of the most important school activities. Its members are responsible for the distribution and maintenance of audio visual materials, often essential to the educational process. A special program which offers students business experience before graduation, D.E. has presented some F.H.S. students with a unique look into the business world. Distributive Education 24 Ski Club Members of this club have one common characteristic, a love for skiing. After several skiing trips, including one to Austria, Ski Club members have acquired much experience on the slopes. Don 7 Come to Me With Expectations of Who I Should Be. Come and Let Me Show You Precisely Who I Am. Fairhaven. Guidance Counselor. Football Coach. Weight Program. What would the administration be like? Most importantly, what were the young people like? Are young people pretty much alike wherever you go? Needs? My abilities (if any?) Do they match up? Ability to share true concern for one another? Concern about growing and helping others grow? This jock- head business? Discipline, especially self-discipline? Self-orient? How big were the walls? Family bit? Honesty with others and especially with myself. Willingness to communicate. What would my new commitment be like? The guidance counselor’s job started rather slowly. The 10th graders were the ones most willing to take a good look at themselves. They undertook the task of mapping out some type of “Game Plan for the year ahead. They were willing to look at things as they were, attempting to cope with the situation. As the year progressed the guidance job took on more meaning and I was fortunate enough to become involved with some fine young people. Mr. Grabiec, Mr. Albritton, and Dr. Donnelly, the new Guidance Director, were especially helpful and encouraging. Their concern for each youngster in FHS is genuine. In football, we were especially fortunate in getting off on the right foot with a championship team, and a win over Dartmouth on “Turkey Day.” Again, we found ourselves surrounded by a fine coaching staff, including Mr. Losert, Mr. Rich, Mr. Risgin, Mr, Bender, Mr. Fernandes, and Mr. Almeida. Mr. Entin, A.D., denied us nothing and helped us in many ways. The 1975 Fairhaven High Football team was a group of unusual young men. We came to know the team members through small group meetings held last spring and summer. The good fortune of having a weight machine purchased enabled our people to begin a strength building program, which paid great dividends. As the football season progressed, the team took on a certain personality. It seemed that they reached a point where they could honestly evaluate themselves. This is when we really came to appreciate the Fairhaven Football player. He dared to be honest with himself, and once he did this, the team concept and growth in other areas came easily. A spirit of cooperation and hard work led to achievement. From the week prior to the Bishop Feehan game until Thanksgiving Day, the young men on this team were a true joy to be with. They were honest. It was a wonderful experience to share with these people, that last month. They made the coaching staff look good. 30 Beware of the Fury of a Patient Man. We wish each of you success, good fortune, and prosperity for many years to come. We will miss seeing you in the halls of Fairhaven High School. We, the class of 1 977, are so proud to have at long last entered this great school. For nine years we have dreamed, and now that dream is a reality. We love you, Fairhaven High School. We took a “giant step” in September, 1974, and in our brief time here we are proud of our accomplishments — PROUD of our young men and women athletes — PROUD of our Homecoming float — and, yes, even PROUD of our teachers and administrators who work so hard to help us. Now, we are anxious to order our class rings; a sign that we finally belong. The Class of “77“ is looking forward to two more exciting, fun- filled, hard-working years at Fairhaven High School. 55 Huff Qtaff L. to R.: S. Murray T. Flavin K. Lopes J. Diggle M. As the candles shone through the frosted glass, the court was announced and the queen was chosen. Reigning over the prom as our queen was Lisa Wojcik. A good time was had by all. 61 HI Senior Class Officers Our Senior Class Officers are: President, Larry Ashley; Vice-President, Danny DePina; Secretary, Karen Bollea; Treasurer, Joan Olival. Our officers and executive board worked hard to make our senior year a successful one. They made all the arrangements for our senior activities. We are grateful to them for their efforts. Senior Class Executive Board 62 American Field Service Veronika Greis and Marie Vaudry. This year at Fairhaven High School we had a foreign exchange student from Austria. Veronika Greis was born in Mistelvach, Austria which is a small town north of Vienna. She was born on November 21,1 955. She is taking the college course at the present time and plans to go into the field of business management. Veronika is very impressed with our country. People have been very friendly toward her during her stay here. When comparing school in the United States and Austria, Veronika finds that there is a much more relaxed atmosphere in our schools. She says that there is a good relationship between teachers and students here. She enjoys books and school and is very eager to learn. We hope that she enjoys her stay in Fairhaven. Veronika is staying with Marie Vaudry, a senior at F.H.S. Peter Hemingway spent last summer representing F.H.S. as an exchange student to Paraguay, South America. He stayed at the home of Mrs. Esther Fernandez of Encarnacion, a major city of Paraguay. Attending the Central Regional Public School of Encarnacion, he found it to be much more conservative than American schools. The escape from the American way of life was restful and the trip proved to be an enjoyable experience. Sandra Tillett spent two months in Germencik, Turkey. She stayed at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Kemal Pehlivanoglu. There were no schools in session during her visit. Sandy visited the ruins of Ancient Roman wars and was very impressed by the beautiful countryside and the mountains. Sandy didn’t go out much during her stay because Turkish girls are supposed to stay inside the house. The only days they are outside are on Thursday and Sunday. On Thursday the women go shopping. Most of their shopping is done in open air markets. On Sunday the family goes to the beach. It was an enjoyable experience for Sandy and she was glad to have had the opportunity to visit a foreign country. 63 Class History After four years of high school, we can look and remember the good and bad times we’ve gone through together. As freshmen, we assumed the role of high school students when we elected our first class officers for 1971-1 972. The president was Mike Pelletier assisted by Jimmy Hebert. Beth Brown was elected secretary. Judy Macedo became treasur er to handle the money from our class project, the sale of fire extinguishers and candy. The First Executive Board consisted of Carol Benoit, Tove Bo, Karen Bollea, Carol Gifford, Laurie Gonet, Joan Olival, and Sandy Tchorz. In ninth grade we held our first class dance to celebrate winning the football championship. Feud was the featured group and the dance was a success. Mr. Sylvia, our class advisor, helped us with the details of the dance. He also guided us with the production of our first yearbook. It was entitled “everything you always wanted to know about the 1 972 freshman class but were afraid to ask. Our first glimpse of life at F.H.S. began on Orientation Day. Most of us were awed by the architecture of the school and we soon learned to appreciate its beauty. Mrs. Mello and Mrs. Lister were assigned as our class advisors and our new officers began their job. Our sophomore class president was John Alexion. Larry Ashley was elected vice-president. Carol Benoit was secretary and Judy Macedo was treasurer. Executive Board for 1972- 1973 was made up of nine members. They were Danny Depina, Polly Ducary, Carol Gifford, Judy Lister, Janet Martin, Susan Nolin, Sandy Tillett, and Jane Valley. These people and the members of the Float Committee worked hard for our first success at F.H.S. Our float, “Hang Stang,” proudly took third place in the annual contest at the championship football game. After the excitement of football season, we undertook our class project, selling assorted chocolates. Before the close of school in our sophomore year, we anxiously ordered our class rings. The following September we became upperclassmen. Junior class president was Charles Kurz and Larry Ashley was vice-president. Karen Bollea was chosen as secretary with Judy Macedo once again treasurer. This year ten students were elected to the Executive Board. They were Tove Bo, Beth Brown, Danny Depina, Carol Gifford, Laurie Gonet, Alan Jackson, Kathy Manley, Joan Olival, Sandy Shurtleff, and Lisa Wojcik. Everyone waited eagerly for October 4, 1 973, the day we were to receive our new class rings. They symbolized the pride we displayed in being a part of Fairhaven High School. The next step as juniors was the beginning of our class project. We had a choice of paying dues or selling M M’s. Our project was a success and gave us a comfortable sum in our class treasury. Now it was time to begin planning for the highlight of our junior year, the Prom. Dancing in the Moonlight was chosen for the theme and April 26, 1974, was the big day. We decorated the Larch Avenue Auditorium in shades of blue, and the tables were adorned with white tablecloths and candles. Couples danced to the music of the Gary Thomas Band. In the latter part of the evening, all eyes turned to Larry Ashley as he mounted the stage to announce the Queen ' s Court. It consisted of Carol Benoit, Tove Bo, Karen Bollea, Polly Ducary, Carol Gifford, Laurie Gonet, Tina Kubel, and Judy Lister. Other members were Judy Macedo, Kathy Manley, Janet Martin, Joan Olival, Paula Paquette, Sandy Shurtleff, Marie Vaudry, and Lisa Wojcik. The time came to announce the queen and suspense mounted. Lisa Wojcik was crowned queen and Judy Macedo attended as her Lady-In-Waiting. Junior Day was scheduled for May 31,1974, and it was on this day that we officially became seniors at Fairhaven High School. Charles Kurz accepted the traditional mantle from Bruce Amaral. The College Book Club Award was presented to Lisa Wojcik and the Harvard Book Club Award was presented to Daniel Ferreira. The senior class of 1974 concluded their last day of high school and we were ready to take their place. For our senior officers, we chose Larry Ashley as president with Danny Depina as his assistant. Karen Bollea was elected secretary and Joan Olival was treasurer. The Senior Executive Board consisted of Marie Alvarez, Jack Bellotti, Carol Gifford, Jack Honohan, Kathy Manley, Sandy Shurtleff, and Lisa Wojcik. Once these positions were established, we began work on our project for the year. We decided to sell M M’s again because our junior project was so successful. Tryouts were held in November for the senior play. “You Were Born on a Rotten Day was selected for production and it was to be directed by Miss Richards, an aide in the English Department. The cast presented the play February 8 and 9, 1975. Spring arrived and with it came graduation rehearsals in preparation for our last day of high school. Junior Day was held on June 4, 1 975, and the Senior Prom was held the same night at Hawthorne Country Club. Granite Fox provided the music for dancing. Graduation took place on June 8, 1 975. It is impossible to forget that good day when we left a world of innocence behind us and entered the world of adults. We Realize That Without These People This Book Would Not Be Possible. DON ' T QUIT When things go wrong, as they sometimes will, When the road you ' re trudging seems all uphill, When the funds are low and the debts are high, And you want to smile, but you have to sigh, When care is pressing you down a bit — Rest if you must, but don ' t you quit. Life is queer with its twists and turns, As every one of us sometimes learns, And many a fellow turns about When he might have won had he stuck it out. Don ' t give up though the pace seems slow — You may succeed with another blow. Often the goal is nearer than It seems to a faint and faltering man; Often the struggler has given up When he might have captured the victor ' s cup; And he learned too late when the night came down, How close he was to the golden crown. Success is failure turned inside out — The silver tint of the clouds of doubt, And you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems afar; So stick to the fight when you ' re hardest hit, — It ' s when things seem worse that you mustn ' t quit.
