THE HUTTLESTONIAN CLASS OF 1973 Fairhaven High School COMMONWEALTH OF MAS8ACHUSETT8 Volume 47 Dedication Theme Principal ' s Address Administration Faculty Activities Sports Underclassmen Seniors Advertisements Dedication 1973 The Class of 1973 respectfully dedicates its yearbook to a group of men and women who have unselfishly helped the graduating class during their three years at Fairhaven High School. We as a class hope that they will accept our success in future years as a token of our deep gratitude and appreciation. Therefore it is our pleasure to say “Thank You” to the Administration and Faculty of Fairhaven High School for their friendship, guidance, and wisdom. OF GIVING Not What You Get, but What You Give Is That Which Proves Your Right to Live By Arthur Guiterman Thom a Photo by: Marie Gagnon ' 73 Teach Your Children You who are on the road Must have a code that you can live by And so become yourself Because the past is just a good-bye. Teach your children well Their father’s hell Will slowly go by And feed them on your dreams The one they pick’s The one you’ll know by. Don’t you ever ask them why If they told you, you would cry So just look at them and sigh And know they love you. And you, of tender years Don’t know the fears That your elders grew by And so please help them with your youth They seek the truth Before they can die. (Can you hear and do you care And can’t you see we must be free To teach our children what you believe in Make a world that we can believe in.) Teach your parents well Their children’s hell Will slowly go by And feed them on your dreams The one they pick’s The one you’ll know by. Don ' t you ever ask them why If they told you, you would cry So just look at them and sigh And know they love you. Words by: Graham Nash 3 Principal ' s Address STANLEY J. GRABIEC Principal Faculty members in Fairhaven High School are well aware of the responsibility they assume in adopting teaching as their profession. They realize, too, the influence they may exert upon the life of each student they teach. Of even greater significance is the role of the parents who foster and direct the physical and spiritual welfare of their sons and daughters. Society, also, in many areas, exerts tremendous impact upon the young. The theme of this year’s “Huttlestonian” exhorts us to: “Teach Your Children Well!’’ It is a good and wise direction. The faculty of our school will do all humanly possible to obey this mandate. With warm personal regards to the Class of 1973. Stanley J. Grabiec 4 A d 5 Secretarial Staff And School Nurse Evelyn L. It is the Rose Bowl with 102,000 cheering fans, and it ' s the ragged kids in a vacant lot using a dime-store ball. It ' s a field in Colorado ankle-deep in snow, and one in Florida sun-baked and shimmering. Football is the great American novel, with chapters from Frank Merri- well, the Bible, Horatio Alger, the life of Lincoln and Jack the Giant-Killer. It ' s a game of young men with big shoulders and hard muscles. It ' s a game of old pros leading their team to the Super Bowl. Football is popcorn, cokes, banners and cigarette smoke. It ' s people standing for the kick-off, lap blankets, pacing coaches, penalties and melo¬ dious alma maters. Football is a scrabble for tickets, playing parlays, wide eyed youngsters getting autographs, a fist fight in the stands, second guessing, banquets, color guards, leaping cheerleaders, homecoming queens, fumbles, goal lines, and the typical mutt running on the field attracting everyone ' s atten¬ tion. It ' s the quivering voice of a dying George Gipp telling his Notre Dame teammates, ‘‘Win one for the Gipper.” Or a Brian Piccallo calling Gale Sayers, “Black Magic.” It’s tears and laughter, pathos and exuber¬ ance. Football is a game that separates the men from the boys, but also is a game that makes kids of us all. Most of all it ' s a capsule of the great country itself. Much of the following is from an article that appeared in the Burming- ham Post Herald that expresses how I feel football fits into our schools and our American Society today. Kevin D. For many a game is lost Ere even a play is run, And many a Coward fails Ere even his work is begun. If you think you are out-classed, you are; You ' ve got to think high to rise; You ' ve got to be sure of yourself before You can ever win a prize. UNDERCLASSMEN Class Exciting and rewarding are only two of the many words that could be used to describe our Junior year at F.H.S. We truly became upperclassmen when we received our class rings on October 12, 1972. This year ' s rings brought a new tradition to F.H.S. The setting of the rings was of a different style and was highlighted by a Class Officers royal blue stone. We then underwent our class project which helped to provide us with the money needed for our Junior Prom. This eventful year ended on Junior Day when we finally accepted our responsibility as Seniors. Hutt Staff 62 1972 will be a year that the Class of ' 75 will always remember. It started in confusion, delirium, and a state of awe. Fairhaven High School was quite a change from the uproarious junior high school atmosphere to which we had become accustomed. As Sophomores, we undertook a barrage of projects including the election of Officers, Executive Board, and Advisory Council, the sale of candy to boost our account, and the class float, which took third place in the competition. Next year with our Junior status, we hope to have as successful a year as this one has proven to be. DESIDERATA Do placidly amid fhe noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without sur¬ render be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth qui¬ etly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser per¬ sons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise cau¬ tion in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about life; for in the face of all aridity and disenchant¬ ment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully s urrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a whole¬ some discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with Ood, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful . Strive to be happy . Found in Old Sainf Pauls Church Baltimore; Dated 1692 66 An Evening in Venice was the theme of our Junior Prom, held on April 29, 1972. The auditorium was transformed into a panorama of Venice canal scenes and a huge orange and yellow canopy hung over the elegantly dressed couples. All were anxiously awaiting the moment when last year’s Queen, Kathy Chandler would place the crown on our new queen. As the band began to play “Color My World, the court came in and took their places on the stage. At last the tension was relieved when Diane Fortin was named Lady-in- waiting and Leslie Lopes was named our Junior Prom Queen. Jun¬ ior Day was finally here and we now took a step toward becoming Seniors. In the midst of the tra¬ ditional activities, Terry Cardoza and Diane Fortin were outstanding representatives of the Junior Class as they played a duet for the Junior Solo. James Silva then took the class mantle from Sen¬ ior Class president Kathy Gouveia. As the Seniors turned to leave, we began our march out of the auditorium and started our plans for the coming year. Melanie Mello and Charlene Alves receive their awards from Mr. Dufour for excellence in the French oral contest. Junior Class President, James Silva, receives the traditional class mantle from Senior Class President Kathy Gouveia. By the end of June 1 972, Kathy was packed and ready for her flight to Europe to spend eight weeks with her adopted Dutch family. A minister of the Dutch Reformed Church, his wife, four brothers, and two sisters welcomed her into their home in Deefzul, Holland. After many bike trips and an eight day Tina’s tour of the tourist attractions and historical sights of Holland, they journeyed by train to their vacation home in Les-Ponts-de-Martel, Switzerland. Kathy and her “family” stayed there four weeks, visiting many places of interest. Before being reunited with the other American A.F.S. students, Kathy spent one last week with her family in Delfzyl. During this time, she attended a college prep school with her sixteen year old brother. The hospitality of the Dutch people and particularly Kathy’s family, greatly impressed her. Their impression of Americans, though it was unfavorable, did not prevent them from opening their home and their hearts to Kathy. Kathy is greatful to have been chosen to represent her school and her country. She will always cherish the memo¬ ries and friends of her 1 972 summer. Eric a Kamper, our A.F.S. student, is from Reeuwijk, Hol¬ land, which is near Gousa where the famous cheese is made. She is living with Karen Hayes and her family. Some of the activities she is in are A.F.S. Club, Ping Pong Club, and French Club. Erica also plays the flute in band and orchestra. Erica enjoys horse-back riding, and of course skating. Erica is a great cook and many of her friends have tasted her Dutch specialties. This year she has travelled with her family to various places throughout New England. She has also visited New York ' s famous landmarks and while there, saw the opera, “Carmen.” Christmas was an exciting event for Erica — sharing fes¬ tivities with a big family. On Nicholas Day, December 5, she received a homemade stocking to hang up on Christ¬ mas Eve. We have all enjoyed having Erica with us this year. We have gained an insight into life in Holland, and Erica has gained an unforgettable experience in America. 71 Cheerleaders ' Dance On November 18, 1972, our annual Cheerleaders’ Dance was held. The auditorium was decorated in the tra¬ ditional ‘‘Blue Devil” spirit of blue and white. The couples danced to the music of Outlaw and all eagerly awaited the announcement of the Football Queen. The tension was soon to be relieved as the cheerleaders called out the names of the court. Then Mary Ellen Wolanski placed the crown on Junior, Sharon Macedo while Karen Hayes was named as her Lady-in-waiting. Sharon and her escort Marty THE QUEEN’S COURT.
