Henry B. Adams We, the Class of 1972, dedicate this yearbook to the man who has unselfishly given both his time and understanding to our class. He has been the class advisor for two years and with him, we have accomplished more than we thought possible. Mr. Albritton, so often looked upon by some students as the arch-villain of Fairhaven High, is really quite a man. His advice is free and to get it one only has to knock on his door. He will never refuse his help. In the years to come when we reminisce oh our Alma Mater there is no doubt that everyone will recall the man who sometimes made us sit in after-session. It seems funny that he always seemed to be in the wrong place at the right time! Sincerely and gratefully, The Class of 1972 FAIRHAVEN PUBLIC SCHOOLS Fairhaven, Massachusetts 02719 Lynwood P. Harriman Superintendent Stanley J. Grabiee Fairhaven High School Principal To the Class of 1972: It is the responsibility of each graduate to develop a plan for lifelong learning: learn¬ ing about the world we live in; the people who inherit it; the environment — physical and social; the sciences; the arts we have inherited and are creating; but most of all, a about the way the world’s peoples are interacting. If one dedicates his efforts toward an understanding of all these areas, he will have not only a chance of survival, but also of making his life enjoyable and significant. My congratulations to you and your loved ones on the memorable occasion of your graduation from Fairhaven High School. Sincerely, Stanley J. Grabiee Principal ADMINISTRA TION Stanley J. Trull. t) 3 tu O to When we began our sophomore year, we were filled with mixed emotions. Once again, being at the bottom, we had to prove ourselves to the up¬ perclassmen. Our efforts proved to be successful by coming in third place in the float contest. Our next achievement was begoming big brothers and sisters to forty-one children from St. Mary’s Home. Although the day began happily, our good-byes ended in tears. As our class project, we chose to sell Fairhaven High School” pens. This idea went over well and we profitted greatly. As we say good-bye to the Seniors, we wish them the best of luck in their future lives. Now that we have finished our Sophomore year we hope for two better ones to come. Oops ... the easy way down! Silly, silly sophomores. 53 C. Filipek, treasurer; L. Lopes, vice-president; V. Pukalis, secretary; and J. Silva, president. Receiving class rings on October 20th began a year of many special events. Soon after, we began our class project of selling candles which would later cover expenses for our Junior Prom and Sen¬ ior activities. As our Junior year comes to a close we can look back on all our many memories, such as our Junior Prom. Our only hope is that our Senior year will be as fulfilling. 1st row: S. Berberian, M. I had a FINE time last night!!! Our lives are growing; they’re growing free, Just like a dandelion, what lies to be? It starts with a seed deep in the earth, Then it grows and grows until it bursts. It bursts into a crown of golden fluff, That shines its life from dawn to dusk. Will this dandelion wither and fall Or to its peak, grow mighty and tall? And we find as the dandelion blows in the breeze. We, too, are like the eagle that was born to be free. Gail Dutra Photographed by Hank Seaman 57 t } tq O c } CLASS HISTOR Y In September of 1968, we began our high school careers with high hopes for the future. Our first action was the elec¬ tion of our class officers who led us through the year’s activities. Advised by Mr. John Haaland, the President, Phil¬ lip Burke, the Vice-President, Charles Chaples, the Secretary, Kathy Gouveia, and the Treasurer, Charlie Jones, ran our class project, the Battle of the Bands. Aiding the officers in this suc¬ cessful venture was the executive board. The members, Teddy Tucker, Gary Val¬ erio, David Loughlin, Kathy Chandler, David Spencer, and Richard Audette also helped to organize our class dance, Santa’s Psychedelic Hop. As Sophomores at F.H.S., we blended in right away. After recovering from the victory party at President Sue Labonte’s we went to work selling magazine sub¬ scriptions. The rest of the officers; Gary Valerio as Vice-President, Kathy Gou¬ veia as Secretary, and Joanne Bennett as Treasurer all worked along with the ex¬ ecutive board: Paul L’Etoile, Joan Alex- ion, Martha Sibor, Debbie Ponte, Cindy Hanczaryk, and Richie Tetreault. On May 29, the Sophomore Dance, featur¬ ing Stuff” was held in the gym. In the course of the profitable year, the second on the road to graduation, we adopted The Bomb” as our class mascot. When we returned from summer vacation and walked through the now fa¬ miliar halls, we felt a glimmer of the ex¬ citement that was to fill our Junior year. The people we chose to lead our class through this important time in our F.H.S. careers were the President, Gary Valerio, the Vice-President, Kathy Gou¬ veia, the Secretary, Joanne Bennett, and the Treasurer, Martha Sibor. Assisting these energetic people were Kathy Chandler, Debbie Sears, Diane Mitchell, Charlie Jones, Carl Albritton, David Grinrod, and Irene Resendes. On Octo¬ ber 13, 1970, we received our long awaited class rings. After the first few days of gazing at our brand new rings and polishing the stones, we were ready to sell Nestle’s Candy Bars. The winter passed bringing the freshness of spring and our Junior Prom, decorated to the theme of The Wonderful World of Yesteryear.” Music was provided by Ray Besse and his Orchestra. The Court consisted of Kathy Gouveia, Martha Sibor, Joanne Bennett, Debbie Hanson, Joan Alexion, Diane Espindola, and Louise Connor. The Lady-in-waiting was Patty McCoy and the Queen was Kathy Chandler. When the long year came to a close, we experienced the excitement of Junior Day when we finally assumed our roles as Seniors! The summer passed all too quickly and we began our reign over F.H.S. Our officers in this most important year were Kathy Gouveia, President, Carl Al¬ britton, Vice-President, Joanne Bennett, Secretary, and Louise Connor, Treasur¬ er. Our executive board consisted of Marion Amaral, Dennis Daniel, David Grinrod, Charles M. Jones, Patti McCoy, and Teddy Tucker. We once again became involved in the profitable selling of Nestle’s Candy Bars, as our class project. In the midst, of the confu¬ sion, we welcomed our foreign exchange student, Mariela Rodriguez from Cara¬ cas, Venezuela. After much dedication and hard work, our Senior Play, The Man Who Came To Dinner,” was pre¬ sented on March 29 at Hastings Junior High. Tom Hiller and Tom Booth acted as Directors and provided invaluable as¬ sistance to all those Seniors who were involved. Then, the most important time of the year arrived. The business students had already left and now Junior Day was our day. Solemnly, but with a certain feeling of accomplishment, the Class of 1972 marched into the auditorium on June 2, 1972. That night our Senior Prom was held at White’s. The following week on Wednesday, June 7, we graduated. This was the last function that our class would attend as a unit. These last days that we spent together were probably the friendliest times. There were only happy faces to be seen. The four years that we have just finished are full of happy memories and one can undoubt¬ edly say that we have found many fine friends, be it students or faculty. This History contains only a few facts and figures of what our class has accom¬ plished. It would be impossible to write all the great times that have come to pass, but it is definitely four years to cherish. THE BOMB ” 58 Carl Albritton, Vice-President; Louise Connor, treasurer; Kathy Gouveia, President; and JoAnn Bennett, secretary. For our final year at F.H.S., the Class Officers organ¬ ized many projects to raise the money that would be needed to finance the abundant Senior activities, which include our Prom and Banquet. Due to the cooperation of the class, the projects were all highly successful. First row: Dennis Daniel, Marion Amaral, and Teddy Tucker. Second row: David Grinrod, Pat McCoy, and Charlie Jones. EXECUTIVE BOARD 59 The Queen and her Court. JUNIOR PROM A new queen is crowned. Cricky and Diane enjoy a dance. Bright yellow daffodils placed in decorative wine bottles graced the cen¬ ter of each table adding the finishing touch to the transformation of the au¬ ditorium into a Gay Nineties” scene. Kathy Chandler reigned over this Wonderful World of YesterYear” as queen. Lady-in-Waiting was Pat McCoy. Kathy and Pat along with their dates led the traditional Grand March with the rest of the Court. The Court consisted of: Martha Sibor, Diane Espindola, Kathy Gouveia, Louise Connor, Joan Alexion, JoAnn Bennett, and Debbie Hanson. As the final dance drew to an end, we left the auditorium with fond memories of our Junior Prom that will remain with us always. Paul, Kay, and JoAnn talk over .the proceedings. JUNIOR DA Y On Friday June 4, 1971 the Class of 1972 took over the role as ' Seniors” of Fairhaven High School. It was a happy day for us, yet some could not stop from crying as the departing Seniors marched out ot the auditorium. Gary Valerio received the mantle from Danny Costa, both being President of his Class. Steve Garro was presented with the Har¬ vard Book Club Award, and Freda Bennett received the College Book Club Award. For us, it was to be the beginning of a most anticipated year. It was to be our final year at F.H.S. ONWARD TO WEST ISLAND!!! 62 Our President, Gary Valerio. OUR AMERICAN FIELD SER VICE STUDENT This year Fairhaven High School welcomed Mariela Rodriguez from Caracas, Venezuela. During her year as our foreign ex¬ change student, Mariela brought many new customs and new words to us all. She lives with Dr. and Mrs. Dennis Brault and their daughters, Denise and Alyson, at 252 Main St. Her American family is rela¬ tively small when compared to the three sisters and brother she left in Caracas. Fairhaven seems rather sparsely populated to her after the big city in which she grew up, but Mariela has come to love our town for its own qualities. Mariela left a climate with a yearly average of 68 degrees to come to New England and become acquainted with its varying temperatures. Her first meeting with SNOW” was a big event in her life. For the first, Mariela grew aware of ihe great game of football and football players! Meeting new friends and seeing new places kept her occupied all the time. We’re all sure that Mariela will take back many memories of Fairhaven, our country, and all of us, that she will treasure all her life. 67 CARLTON C. ALBRITTON JR. And make allowance for their doubting, too; If you can wait and not be tired of waiting Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies; Or, being hated, don’t give way to hating; And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise; If you can dream, And not make dreams your master; If you can think, And not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster, And treat those two imposters just the same. If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by Knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop, and build them up with worn-out tools; If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: Hold on!” If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings — nor lose the common touch — If neither foes not loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you — but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth And everything that’s in it And — which is more — You’ll be a Man, my son! THE CLASS OF 1972 Graduated on June 7, 1972 May your lives be full of happiness, love, and peace. r aoJZ7?j? ' 3 rf yjtSCs Cl U lou ' ofc ' )Zt r?z otO V I 1 1 i I JmfrZ ;-r ■ . y; y ,c. t . ..
