Paul Williams Roger Nichols The Class of 1971 respectively dedicates its yearbook to a man who has given his time and effort to both the faculty and the student body of Fairhaven High School. Teaching is more than a profession to this man, it is a way in which he can give a little of himself to help others. His calm expression and mannerism make his students enjoy learning his subjects. For many years he has unselfishly served as faculty advisor of The Huttlestonian; therefore, it is our honor to call upon you, Mr. Manuel Fontes, and say “Thank You.” 9 7 l 4 GaSfe °f Gonfenh U TOe’oe Only j?usi TOeyun CPrin cip als TKessaye faculty ancf CJurricu am Tlctwiiies Sports 01 n dercfassm en s eniors 71 cfo ertisiny FAIRHAVEN PUBLIC SCHOOLS Fairhaven, Massachusetts 02719 Lynwood P. Harriman Superintendent Stanley J. Grabiec Fairhaven High School Principal To the Class of 1971: Our democracy is facing a crisis. There are dangers from abroad and from within. To meet these threats, the present generation, adult and student alike, must assume greater responsibilities if the benefits of democracy are to endure and if the func¬ tioning of democracy is to continue unimpaired. It is mandatory, therefore, that young people today must have understanding of the meaning of democracy, a sincere devotion to its ideals, some experience in the democratic way of living, and a desire to work for its preservation and improvement. To the implementations of these premises, education at this school is committed. It is hoped that, in future years, the dedicated citizenship of our graduates will attest to the wisdom of that commitment. Sincerely, Stanley J. Grabiec Principal 7 Mrs. Alda H. Fairhaven High School organized a cross-country team for the first time ever last fall. The practice con¬ sisted of a 10-mile course which was strung throughout Fairhaven. Because this was the first year and only a few boys participated, it was impossible to compete in conference competition; therefore, 3 exhibition meets made up their schedule. Their opposition con¬ sisted of Upper Cape Regional, Wareham, and Ap- ponequet. At these meets, a 2] 2 mile course is run with the first ten finishers getting points. With only 6 members it would be rather difficult to win a com¬ petition. The 1970 season proved a successful begin¬ ning to this new sport at FHS. With four returning underclassmen and a little more interest, cross-country could become a major fall sport. 58 Dual Meets Fairhaven 38 Stang 48 Fairhaven 28 Barnstable 53 Fairhaven ' 30 Falmouth 51 Fairhaven 40 Dennis-Yarmouth 41 Fairhaven 23 New Bedford 40 Fairhaven forfeit win Wareham Fairhaven forfeit win Yoke Won Lost 2 5 Outstanding members on this year’s squad were John Howarth, Rocky Pease, Lind¬ sey Gifford, Brian Young, William Price, Joseph Fernandes, Jose Fernandes, Ronald Labrie, Mark Harriman, Joseph Booth, Mike Gaudreau, Lloyd Hoadly, and Danny Cardoza. l Jin er Junior Varsity Winter Association Meet Team Finish: 3rd Individual Places: Jose Fernandes 3rd Place.50 yard dash William Price 1st Place.2 mile run Ronald Lahrie 2nd Place.High Jump Mark Harriman 2nd Place.Shot put Joseph Booth 4th Place. 1000 yard run Mike Gaudreau 5th Place. 2 mile run Lloyd Hoadly 5th Place. 600 yard run Danny Cardoza 4th Place . shot put Capeway Conference Meet Team Finish: 4th Individual Places: William Price 5th Place.2 mile run Joseph Fernandes 5th Place.1 mile run 59 This year’s outstanding seniors were Rocky Pease, Brian Young, and Lindsey Gifford. At the Falmouth invitation, Young finished 2nd in the mile and Pease was 3rd in the 50 yard dash, outstanding feats in the field of nearly 50 teams. Brian broke Fairhaven’s mile record and the Capeway Conference record for the winter track mile. Lindsey was 1st in the shot put at the Capeway Conference meet. Rocky finished 2nd in the 50 yard dash at the same meet. 60 Kneeling: Coach Wayne Wilson and Captain Steve Koska, Jeff Mike Camacho, George Howland, Blair Fitts, Paul LeClair, Dupont, Gary Felix, Gary Valerio, Carl Taber, Steve Ponte, Chris Tapper, and Manager, Dennis Bollea. 1970 71 as£e(6aff l Jriie up Before the season started, Coach Wilson was inter¬ viewed by the Standard Times. His probable starters were to be Steve Koska, Steve Ponte, Gary Valerio, and Blair Fitts and his major prospect was Mike Camacho. Barnstable, in his opinion, was the team to beat and the outcome goes without saying. The season opened at Taunton with a heart-breaking 48 to 46 loss. Fairhaven’s scoring was equally dis¬ tributed which prevailed throughout the season. The Capeway schedule opened with a loss to power¬ ful Barnstable. Fitts led with 18 points and showed much promise. After an easy victory at Wareham, Fairhaven put together its finest effort at Dartmouth. The entire team played well as four players hit double figures. 61 After a costly loss to Bourne, the Devils won a thrilling 72 to 70 victory over Falmouth. Steve Koska had his finest output with 20 points. In the second encounter with Barnstable, Fairhaven lost a tough 59 to 52 decision. An all-around team ef¬ fort was not enough to beat the strong Raiders, and 6 victories in a row were now necessary to qualify for the Tech. After a tough win over Wareham, the Devils coasted to 5 easy wins and were in the Tech! For the third time this season Fairhaven had to play the big Barnstable team and tech tourney hopes came to an end as the Raiders won 70 to 53. Steve Ponte scored 19 points and played a strong board game but the season long team balance was not present. A most successful and exciting season had come to an end. Hats off to Coach Wilson and his fine Fair¬ haven crew!!!!! Simon Sez. .. 63 64 Blair Fitts The 8th leading scorer in the conference with a 14.6 ave. air was selected to the Capeway All-Stars. Steve Ponte, Fairhaven’s leading scorer, was 6th in the league in jiat department. He was the team’s “big man” and obviously was a apeway All-Star. Junior Mike Camacho was the Devils 4th All-Star pick. 65 .junior Uarsiiu r 5eason cS uminaru The Fairhaven High School junior v arsity squad en¬ joyed their finest season in recent years, and the best record ever for Coach John Losert. The team com¬ piled an outstanding 15 and 2 over-all record, in¬ cluding 14 straight wins. Of these 14 wins, twelve were in Capeway Conference play, as the team breezed their way to a perfect season and the conference championship. George Howland, Jim Cunhe, and David Almeida were tabbed as “outstanding candidates for next year’s varsity.” Congratulations to coach Losert and his Capeway champions!! Together we experienced our first year of high school sports, activities, and classes. With joint forces our class officers and executive board, under the leadership of Mrs. Patricia Mello, launched our class project of sell¬ ing candy during the Easter season. As we end this year we would like to wish the Seniors the best of luck in their endeavors of the fu¬ ture. To the juniors, a successful Senior year. Finally, we agree with mutual emotions that we will meet again and have a prosperous junior year. “Jump! Jump! Absent when pic¬ ture was taken: Irene Re- sendes. 76 On returning to school in September, our of¬ ficers; Gary Valerio, Kathy Gouveia, Joanne Ben¬ nett, and Martha Sibor, began to plan a full year of activities highlighted by the Junior Prom. The first order of business was to elect an executive board: Carl Albritton, Kathy Chandler, Dave Grindrod, Charlie Jones, Diane Mitchell, Irene Resendes, and Debbie Sears. Selling candy bars was selected as our class project. With the guid¬ ance of Mr. Carlton Albritton and Mr. Fernando Silva it proved to be an immense success. On May 7, 1971 the Junior Prom was held. The Larch Avenue Auditorium was decorated to the theme of “The Wonderful World of Yester¬ year”. It had an old-fashioned atmosphere which was filled with the lively sounds of Ray Besse and his Orchestra. Our great year ended on Junior Day when we were officially “Seniors”. The effects of Women Lib at FHS? 77 “We are but just one step away from greatness and before the rest of the world knows it; to take that step.” we are going Our theme for the Junior Prom was “A Time For Us”, the love theme from Romeo and Juliet. Keeping this in mind, the art department magically trans¬ formed our addition auditorium into a scene from Shakespeare’s famous play. The room was reminiscent of the Renaissance Era with a beautiful blending of color, soft lighting, and delightful music. The members of the court were Shirley Faria, Rebecca Fleisch, Dale Fostin, Catherine Maynard, Donna Patasini, Sylvia Pukulis, Paula Ruszel, Deborah Sheffield, Carol Sprouse, and Catherine Tucker. The girls walked up to their places on the stage as “A Time For Us” was played in the background. The tension of the evening was soon to he relieved. Class President Phillip Mello escorted the new lady-in- waiting, Paula Ruszel, to the center of the stage. The 1969 Junior Prom Queen, Kathleen Morgan, crowned our new queen Shirley Faria and handed her the queen’s roses. Shirley and her escort then began the Queen’s Dance. The evening was an enjoyable one for all who at¬ tended the prom. Shirley and her date i .: t The Queen and her Court 80 Last year’s Queen Kathleen Morgan 81 Junior On June 5, 1970 our long awaited Junior Day ar¬ rived. Although the day was met with rain, our spirits were not dampened. We gazed upon our fellow class¬ mates in spring lace and pressed suits seldom seen in the corridors of F.H.S. Everyone helped to fasten the traditional yellow roses, then waited in anticipation for our grand entrance into the auditorium. After the sophomores and guests had been seated, our entrance march “Pomp and Circumstance” began. The Seniors filed in to the strains of “Scipio”, and the assembly was underway. Philip Mello, president of our class, received the Phil takes the mantle. mantle from the Senior Class president Charles Humphreys. Albert Gaucher played a solo, and awards were given. The College Club Book Award was given to Rebecca Fleisch, and the Harvard Club Book Award went to William Fleisch. Finally, the secret of the Year¬ book Dedication was announced. Mr. Silva was the proud and lucky teacher. Through tears the Senior Chorus sang “The Halls of Ivy”, and the program was over. The Seniors left now only to return for gradua¬ tion. We Juniors left with a happy feeling of re¬ sponsibility, authority, and high hopes for the coming year. The Junior Solo Gfass Officers Gary Hammond, treasurer; Marlene Livramento, vice president; Kathy Magnant, secretary; Daniel Costa, president. Executive Board: Rebecca Fleisch, Pamela Couto, Candace Allain, Mark Medeiros, Jo-Ann Renaud, Ed¬ ward Zieba. Gfass Jhfisiory We left the ninth grade feeling scared To enter F.H.S. The corridors amazed us, Soon, we were in a mess. Girls were on the boys stairs The tunnel was a pain “Left or right at the locker rooms?” We asked seniors time and time again. The hugeness of Room 7 Was an awesome thing While wild penny throwing never ceased to ring. We were underclassmen and We felt it all the way. Insults ringing in our ears, a few smiles, lots of sneers We witnessed every day. Then we started waking up, That dazed look left our eyes. Now our shining personalities At last began to rise. James Gidley was our President His “Vice” was Charlene Kenney Debi Motta was Secretary While Gary Hammond saved each penny. Phoebe Taylor, William Fleisch, Albert Gaucher, Karen Alexion, Kathy Pepin—The Executive Board Who helped with their suggestions. Our officers were something else! From the start we bucked tradition. Chocolate bunnies were out of it, Toothbrush selling was our mission. Through all the groans and chuckles We became millionaires Though our helpful advisors Earned a few gray hairs. Then we summoned all our wits, Used courage and some chance Marched into Mr. Grabiec’s office And won an “untraditional” Sophomore Dance! Anyone from miles around Could place a sure thing bet That we would be the greatest class F.H.S. has seen yet! Before we knew what had happened Our Junior year was here No more little sophomores No more sitting in the rear A feeling of pride o’erwhelmed us Now we were more self-assured. The new sophomores were below us It was their turn to feel absurd By the time October rolled around Each student had his ring The final mark of superiority The proof of everything. The football season was fantastic Our Juniors took a leading role Basketball was much the same As many Juniors stole the show. Our officers worked hard all year Dedicated thru and thru And now as a reminder We’ll name them all for you. Phil Mello was the President Danny Costa was his “Vice” Gary Hammond was the treasurer Secretary was Becky Fleisch. The Executive Board consisted of Listen carefully so you’ll hear us A1 Gaucher, Ed Zieba, Kathy Magnant, Jane Ryle and Mark Medeiros. But now there are two more members We haven’t mentioned yet Shelly Alphonse and Karen Hanczaryk These two complete the set. Candy-selling was our project To make money for the prom Thus were relatives forced to buy Aunt, uncle, dad, and mom. That year the students began to protest A new dress code was their aim April saw short skirts and moustaches The kids had won their game. The Junior Prom was drawing near Our class began to worry Where to rent a tux, what gown to wear, Must be decided in a hurry. The date was set at May the 8th, The theme “A Time For Us” The queen’s court was selected All after much bother and fuss. That night the couples arrived arm in arm Dressed up fit to kill Soon it was time to choose the queen And everyone kept still. Phil Mello was the first to know That the lady-in-waiting was Paula Ruszel Shirley Faria, our 1970 queen, Was smiling, happy, and tres belle. And now the year was almost thru Only one more big event That, of course, was Junior Day What else could we have meant? Yellow roses and carnations Were worn by each girl and boy 84 We filed into the auditorium With feelings of great joy. Awards were soon to be given out A1 Gaucher played the French horn Phil Mello received the class mantle The seniors had a look of forlorn. We filed out to some music The day had finally come At last we were Seniors We were number one! All summer we’d anticipated Our final senior year. In September, 1970 At last the time was here. Now in those halls of F.H.S. We would try to pass the test That’s taken by all the Seniors To be the highest and the best, We were dismayed, at first, to find That everything felt the same Then suddenly we learned the rules And played the “Senior Game”. We were leaders on the Spray And tried for new ideas. Next, a yearbook to create, “How?”, we voiced our fears! Graduation gowns, the Senior Play, Soon these troubled our brain Taking Senior pictures too! A pleasure or a pain? Wallet photos soon appeared On every desk and hand Seniors writing, “Remember when—” Saying, “Give me one, understand?” Of course there was Frank Guerra Exchange student at Fairhaven High He left the Philippines to come here And he was a really great guy Distributive Education was a course That had started in the fall Also, there was definitely No dress code left at all! Then we noticed all our friends Who we would have to leave We felt our closeness and that time Was flying faster than we dared believe. Some students were making plans to go To France on the April vacation! Our officers were working hard To plan our graduation. We’d had a successful candy sale With President Danny Costa, Also, Marlene Livramento, Kathy Magnant, and Gary Hammond The others officers on the roster. Eddie Zieba and Pam Couto Becky Fleisch, Jo Ann Renaud Mark Medeiros, Candy Allain The Executive Board who worked so hard. Our sports this year had been exciting The “Turkey Day” game was great! Basketball, baseball, tennis, and track Were nothing but first rate! June that special month of all That month of closing books Came as we gave to friends and school Farewells and long last looks. Our Senior Prom, the ultimate! Our banquet as a class— Vespers, and our graduation A hard-earned diploma, at last! It’s true that all these years of school Were all we’d ever known. As we walked in cap and gown Everyone thought of how we’d grown. And mixed in our emotions Along with tears and pride Was a yearning for the future Which we couldn’t entirely hide. Our hopes and dreams and ideal plans Did pound within each heart. We realized truly that this was not An end, but just a start. May we live up to expectations May we prove our worthiness May we make the world a better place and strive for happiness. 85 Jficjhest yfonors James Gidley fiftyfi yfonors Rebecca Fleisch Jane Martin yfonors Candace Allain Ronald Brault Alan Clunie Angela Costa Pamela Couto Priscilla Days William Fleisch Louise Fredette Paul Gifford Cindy Gonet Karen Hanczaryk Steven Koska Sylvia Pukulis Jane Ryle Phoebe Taylor MAGNUS AADLAND College Reggie “He talked, he talked, Lord, how he talked!” Born: April 6, 1953; Ambition: To become an architect; Favorite Expression: “I don’t be¬ lieve it!”; Pet Peeve: Mechanical Drawing Class; Suppressed Desire: To tell off the English teacher; Happiest When: Not in my Senior English Class; Probable Fate: Full time grocery clerk at Fernandes; Salient Characteristic: hair in his eyes. Guest Who once has had a friend has found The link ’twixt mortal and divine; Though now he sleeps in hallowed ground, He lives in memory’s sacred shrine; And there he freely moves about, A spirit that has quit the clay. And in the times of stress and doubt Sustains his friends throughout the day. No friend we love can ever die; The outward form but disappears; I know that all my friends are nigh Whenever I am moved to tears. And when my strength and hope are gone, The friends, no more, that once I knew, Return to cheer and urge me on Just as they always used to do. They whisper to me in the dark Kind words of counsel and of cheer; When hope has flickered to a spark I feel their gentle spirits near. And Oh! because of them I strove With all the strength that I can call To keep their friendship still alive And to be worthy of them all. Death does not end our friendships true; We all are debtors to the dead; There, wait on everything we do The splendid souls who’ve gone ahead. To them I hold that we are bound By double pledges to be fine. Who once has had a friend has found The link ’twixt mortal and divine. Gary Vieira Joseph Shelley 7R emoriam Edith Moore For there is hope of a tree, If it be cut down, that it will sprout again, And that the tender branch thereof will not cease. Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, And the stock thereof die in the ground; Yet through the scent of water it will bud, And put forth boughs like a plant. But man dieth, and lieth low; Yea, man perisheth, and where is he? As the waters fail from the sea, And the river is drained dry; So man lieth down and riseth not; Till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, Nor be roused out of their sleep. —from JOB chapter 14 142 St Tost Schoof —Charlene Kenney and —Tony Medeiros ( JlCost BiJtefy to Succeecf —Karen Hanczaryk and -—Billy Fleisch ' ■ u. Now we will return to the regularly scheduled program. “So, Paul, do you think a poker champ like yourself de¬ pends more on skill or chance?” “Well, Al, a little of both!” “For those of you in our T.V. audience, we have just been joined by Paul Avila and George Laronda the two poker play¬ ers of the jet set. We’ll be back to hear more from them in a minute. Now let’s listen to some women who have their own individual ideas of what they like in stockings. California: “Hi, I’m Pam Auffrey, Even a flower child likes a stocking which will make her look peaceful and flowery that’s why I use Cling-aLong-Hose. Los Angeles: Exotic dancer Debbie Sheffield says, “When I’m under those lights I want my stockings to move with me! That’s why Cling-aLongs are for me! Boston: “Here at the Medical Center,” says Claudette Pare, “my stockings have to be white and neat. My profession calls for it, and I wouldn’t think of using any other stocking than Cling-aLong. “Ladies use Cling-aLong! No matter what type you are, Cling-a-Longs suit you day after day!” “Well, Dickie, its sure been a great show hasn’t it? I’ve appreciated hearing from our last guest, Clinton Pires, who’s really setting some records in bowling and hockey. But, now its about that time, folks. Hope you’ve enjoyed tonite’s show. Be here tomorrow night for a fabulous time again. Here’s a rundown of our guests: “We’ll have Rob Sicard, Hollywood’s hot comic, two former Gibbs girls, Charlene Kenney and Pam Couto, Labor Union President Steve Lawton, Playboy bunny Kathy Maynard (that should be fun) and last but not least the knowledgeable and renowned James Gidley. Well, that’s it for tonite, friends. Remember what your pal Al Clunie says “Always keep talking!” “Goodnight, Al” “Goodnight, Dickie” 161 The President: “But Father, it ' s in¬ creased the sales!” u U£e JirsP 1 DisiriSutw e (Ljcfucaiion JJES. 1971 The Vice-President: “Blend in!” The Treasurer: “What did I do with my Lunch?” The Secretary: “Gee you look pretty to¬ day—Sir.” 162 “Man from Glad.” “Coffee, tea or..
