For the past three years, as students of Fairhaven High School, we have witnessed the demonstrations and riots which have taken place on the streets of American cities. We have formulated opinions concerning these incidents and the legislative action pertaining to social prob¬ lems. We have learned more of the world around us; of our friends and neighbors; of ourselves. These three years have afforded us the opportunity for each of us to plant the seeds of his future; to build a foundation of life. It has been a time of security, a time of laughter, a time of dancing, a time, which, for us, is never to come again, a time which we must now leave, a time which others must fill. We must now look to the challenges which face us and to the time for which each one of us must strive .. the time of peace. 3 (Efl (Btoerjrthmij To everything, turn, turn, turn; There is a season, turn, turn, turn; And a time to every purpose under heaven. A time to be born, a time to die; A time to plant, a time to reap; A time to kill, a time to heal; A time to laugh, a time to weep. A time to build up, a time to break down; A time to dance, a time to mourn; A time to cast away stones, A time to gather stones together. SThere 3s a Reason A time of love, a time of hate; A time of war, a time of peace; A time when you may embrace, A time to refrain from embracing. A time to gain, a time to lose; A time to rend, a time to sew; A time to love, a time to hate; A time for peace, I swear it’s not too late. To everything, turn, turn, turn; There is a season, turn turn, turn; And a time to every purpose under heaven. Words: Book of Ecclesiastes Adaption by Pete Seeger ■ • • ■ . I • . I I l ' H. Mrs. Knipe is a dedicated and tireless person, one who understands many of the attitudes and problems of young people. For many years, in fact, so many that she was a teacher of many of our parents, she has aided students in Fairhaven to complete their education and has inspired them to go on to fuller and more successful lives. Although we do not by any means agree with all of Mrs. Knipe’s ideas, we do respect her viewpoints, and we salute her integrity and determination to do her part to make the ■world a better place in which to live. In addition to her duties as head of the English department, her untiring efforts on behalf of a variety of projects, the school newspaper and the Biafran aid collection taken up last Christmas, have earned her gratitude of students and faculty alike. The warmth of her personality and the strength of her character have been driv¬ ing forces at Fairhaven High School for many years. It is for all these reasons and with an eye also on her decades of thankless but untiring service to the young people of our town that we dedicate this, our yearbook, to Mrs. Mabel H. Knipe. Beturation to Hire. But}) i§t Hi K (llhe principal s As educators we have been entrusted the responsibility of continuously im¬ proving the quality and quantity of education at all levels. To be successful the educator must turn to the government and the community for their co¬ operation. The power of any one body or agency would place restrictions on the development of free people in a democracy. It is appropriate that the Senior Class select the song, Turn, Turn, Turn, based on the chapter of Ecclesiastes in the Bible, as their theme for the com¬ plex problems which the graduate faces today. Vietnam, technological innova¬ tions, the explosion of knowledge and the changing social relationships require that ever)’ student, too, must turn, turn, turn, in a cooperative way if a general condition of mutual trust and understanding is to be achieved. Throughout the first weeks of September, Sophomore faces were decidedly marked with confusion. However, as we have be¬ come accustomed to schedules and teachers we have acquired new strength and respon¬ sibility which will help to enlighten our next two years at Fairhaven High School. The class departed from the traditional sale of chocolate Easter Bunnies by holding a toothbrush project which brought $ 700.00 to the treasury. We are now looking forward with mixed feelings to the year ahead, our first year as upperclassmen. We await the many exciting experiences which our junior and senior years will bring and which will help us to pave our path of life. On the arrival of our rings, early in October, we had the first symbol of our newly acquired status, which provided a subject of con¬ versation for weeks to come. The annual Junior Class project, the sale of fruit cakes, was a task undertaken with enthusiasm and a few sighs, and with the assistance of our advisor, Mr. Borowiec, the sale was a great success. Our Junior Prom, which climaxed our year, was held in May, an experience which will remain in our mem¬ ories for years to come. The Senior year draws near, but the class of ’70 is prepared for its challenge and looks forward to our last year as students in Fairhaven High. ■ . jn I |L f ¥■ ‘ t i ;v F ' 5 Our Junior Class Officers: from left to right: Charles Hum¬ phreys, Vice-President; Dawn Birtwistle, President; Jane Tucker, Secretary; Andrew Rapp, Treasurer, is spending the year in New ' Zealand with the A.F.S. program. On this special day, the gradu¬ ating seniors sadly departed from Fairhaven High, and the juniors happily accepted the responsibilities of a Senior class. The program commenced with the Juniors, each wearing a traditional yellow rose, entering the auditorium to Sul¬ livan ' s Entrance March of the Peers.” The silent, meditative seniors marched to Baptiste’s Entre de Procession.” Patrick Cataldo, the senior soloist, sang Darion’s The Impossible Dream” while Elizabeth Dearden, a pianist, played Chopin’s Polonaise in A.” The Junior soloist, Susan Furtado, played the Tellemann Concerto” on her viola. Symbolic of the annual handing down of leadership, the Mantle Oration was delivered by Jeffrey Silva, President of the Class of 1968, and was accepted by Thomas Wojcik, President of the Class of 1969. Mr. Stanley J. Grabiec, headmaster, presented scholastic awards to those students who displayed outstanding aca¬ demic achievement during the past year. The Juniors commended were Shirley Carreiro and Patricia Newett. John Medeiros received the Harvard Club Book Award and Susan Torres, the College Club Book Award, for outstand¬ ing citizenship, leadership, and service. The Senior Chorus under the direction of Mrs. Virginia Lannan sang Russell-Vick’s The Halls of Ivy” to finish the program. The Senior class exited solemnly to Mendelssohn’s Cornelius Festival March” and the Junior class to the Entrance March of the Peers” to mark the conclusion of a tradition always to be remembered by the Class of 1969. John Medeiros receives Harvard Club Book Award. Susan Torres is presented with the College Club Book Award. 95 Class Ijistiirii In September of 1965, we, the graduating class of 1969, began our high school career as upperclassmen at Fairhaven Junior High School. We began our activities with the election of our class officers; Thomas Wojcik, President; Donald Joseph, Vice-President; Linda Victorino, Secretary; and Susan Gardella, Treas¬ urer. Jean Wyss, Susan Tangen, Thomas Darwin, Mark Carter, Peter Harriman, and Susan Torres were delegated members of the Executive Board. Our first class social was a successful dance which carried the theme of Surfin’ East Coast,’’ and was held in the spring. The class also produced a One Act play en¬ titled The Little Man Who Wasn’t There,” by Earl J. Dias, which was enthusiastically received by all. Before we realized it was over, the summer of 1966 had passed, and we prepared ourselves for the re¬ sponsibilities that we were about to acquire as sophomores at Fairhaven High. Our first duty was to elect our class officers. They were: Tom Wojcik, President; Susan Torres, Vice-President; Susan Gardella, Secre¬ tary; and Peter Harriman, Treasurer. Members of the Executive Board were Tom Darwin, Susan Green, Mark Carter, Jean Wyss, and Nancy Knutsen. Our successful fund-raising project was a sale of chocolate Easter bunnies. As our first year as upperclassmen began in the fall of 1967, we knew there was much to be done. Plans for our Prom and Junior Day had to be made, and to make the decisions, we elected Tom Wojcik, Presi¬ dent; Susan Torres, Vice-President; Sue Gardella, Secretary; and Jean Wyss, Treasurer. Nancy Hayward, Nancy Knutsen, John Medeiros, T om Darwin, and Peter Harriman served on the Executive Board. Not long after we returned to school, we were much pleased by the arrival of our school rings. Never can we forget our Junior Class project of unloading fruitcakes. Through the persistence of the Class Ex¬ ecutives, the Student Council representatives, and all the members of our class, we were able to efficiently complete this project in only four weeks. The Honor Society inducted 13 members from our class. They were: Pat Newett, Shirley Carreiro, John Medeiros, Joanne Robitaille, Barry Fisher, Sandra Robinson, Charlene Barnett, Peter Harriman, Robert Braley, Dana Pierce, Elizabeth Andrews, Jean Wyss, and Susan Torres. As Spring approached, we became more active. Our prom was held on April 26 and was An En¬ chanted Evening” for all. The Larch Avenue Auditorium was artistically decorated with a South Seas at¬ mosphere, highlighted by the throne of our lovely queen, Hal Id is Berg. On June 7, we, the Class of 1969 officially took over the responsibilities of Seniors, as Tom Wojcik accepted the symbolic mantle from Jeff Silva, President of the Class of 1968, and Susan Furtado played the Junior solo. As we stood and watched our graduating friends pass by, we knew that our time was approaching. The year ended on a light note when the last day of school was designated as a Bermuda Day, sponsored by our Junior Class. The proceeds went to the Charles C. Entwistle Memorial Scholarship Fund. Our Senior year was bursting with activities. In September, Neli Pryslicki, an Australian exchange stu¬ dent, was warmly welcomed by our class. To lead us through this final year, we chose Susan Torres, Presi¬ dent; Tom Wojcik, Vice-President; Jean Wyss, Secretary; and Bill Rapp, Treasurer. The members of the Senior Executive Board were: Susan Almeida, Tom Daigle, Tom Darwin, Ba rry Fisher, and Susan Gar¬ della. To boost the Class treasury, we sold cans of chocolates. In those final few months we spent together, we felt all the joy of working, playing, and being to¬ gether as a class. We can never forget the patience of both Miss Trafton and Mr. Paquin in putting on our Senior Play, The Death and Life of Sneaky Fitch,” and the time spent by our dedicated yearbook staff to publish the 1969 HI TTLESTONIAN. We shall cherish the memories of our Senior prom which was held on June 6 at the Holiday Inn, and was the last dance we attended as classmates. The Solemn Vesper Services, held on June 8, aided in commencing the lives which lay before us. The Senior Banquet was held on June 9 at the Holiday Inn. June II was one of the most meaningful days of our lives, for we entered the auditorium as a class of high school seniors, and we left as graduates filled with tears of mixed emotions. We were all sorry to leave Fairhaven High School, for never again will this building belong to us, althtough we shall belong to FHS. Fairhaven Fligh School is now a wonderful part of us: of our futures, our memories, and of our hearts. 96 1%9 (Lias ill ill We, the Class of 1969, being of reasonably sound mind and body, and in full control of our faculties, do hereby declare this our last will and testament. The cast, who worked so hard on this production, consisted of: Robert Braley as the Guitarist—Narra¬ tor, Thomas Darwin, as Sneaky Fitch, Christine Hayward, as Maroon, Cheryl Rose as Mrs. Blackwood, and Gayle Whittle as Mrs. Vale, Peter Harriman as the Reverend Black¬ wood, and Coleman Blodgett as Doc Burch.
