r We stood in awe, That first day, Gazing at this that was To be our house of learning For four years. Fairhaven High School. It was new, unknown, Unfamiliar. Perhaps We were afraid. We looked up at the Tower of the school. High, so high, it rose. Then we climbed the steps And entered. Our school. Thus each began the Ascent of a new, Unchallenged peak. Thus each stepped Anew into Life. (ffk00 nf 1966 2 (feeru Jflmmtam f t o .OPERTy qĀ . v JUN2H966 THE MILLICENT LIBRARY F Ā HĀ V|N, MA9S - f 74 , 4 fr ' 9?3 0 994 ;. r iiy 3 Mrs. ffibeljm 1 Ā£. Martin Behtotte It has been said that the highest of distinctions is service to others.ā Helping others, aiding them, is trtily a task of honor, but it is also one of dedication. Unselfish giving of oneās self, oneās time, and oneās knowl¬ edge to others is indeed a job in itself. It requires patience, understanding, and a feeling for people. Mrs. Martin has patience, she has understanding, and she has feeling for people. Whether comforting us when we re sick, or reprimanding us for a misdemeanor, Mrs. Martin was our friend, our advisor. She coordinated our ins and outsā and pulled the loopholes out of our weekly schedules. She gave to us an orderly environ¬ ment in which to learn, and by so doing, aided us in our education. Mrs. Martin was familiar to all of us, and for all she was an indispensable friend. It is to you, Mrs. Martin, that we dedicate this, our yearbook, in gratitude for all the myriad services you have rendered us. 4 Jfrmn (But printtpal Members of the Class of 1966 Soon you will leave behind you a phase of your life which can never be relived except in the memories that come to you in unexpected ways and times. Yet it is not a time for gloom. Life is a precious, refreshing phenomenon which brings to you constantly new and exciting moments. As you have known from early childhood, the best view of the landscape is the one you see from the top of the hill. So it is with your day to day living. Your vision encompasses more as you aspire to a fuller life if your aspirations direct your path upward. Your yearbook theme, Climb Every Mountain,ā is most appro¬ priate. One never knows what lies beyond the ridge. The vista from the summit may give you inspiration and courage to continue your quest for a more satisfying life. Be then, as our New England poet, Whittier, wrote, ' ' A man to match his mountains, not to creep Dwarfed and abased below them.ā May your climb upward bring you joy and success. 5 (SnMr of (fiontents (Jllimb Ā©Oeru Mountain f dearth Ifiijh anh Unto (furriruUnit mb if ant It u jfolloto (Bier r Bainboto fSnUertkssmen ādtoerir path |Jou Bnnto ActUntirs ājforft (fiberu Streamā āport STil fjou Jfinh |{nur Bream entnrs 8 What is education ? Education is a search, A search after truth, Whose sole guidepoint Is knowledge; Knowledge gleaned From nature, From the past, From action and experience. Throughout our lives We continue the search While, we, as students, Have only begun here. For it is here that we have First learned To searchā To search high and low. 9 Ahmitti CHARLES C. ENTWISTLE B.S., M.A. Mr. Entwistle, our principal, has directed another successful year at Fairhaven High. (fnglish Proficiency in our native language is one of the greatest, most useful assets which we as students can cultivate. During our years at Fairhaven High School, we are given training in the arts of speaking and writing with ease and clarity. We learn to express ourselv es to others and to communicate our thoughts. Another facet of English training at F.H.S. is varied reading in Eng¬ lish, American, and world literature. Through prose and poetry we continue our search after truth. MABEL H. Mrs. Shapiro shares another moment of gay camaraderie (?) with Linda Holmes. 15 foreign languages Knowledge of the rudiments of another language is a vital part of what we learn in Latin, French, and Spanish classes, but it is, in fact, only a portion of the true scope of study. By studying Latin we learn of the ancient and memorable Roman civilization; we study her society and read the works of her greatest authors. In French and Spanish we become acquainted with modern civilizations whose cultures and languages live today. This too is a part of our search. DONALD J. B. DUFOUR B.A. M.Ed. High in spirit, low in funds, we soon became an active and happy group of underclassmen. Allotting ourselves the proj¬ ect of the year of magazine peddling, we found that our class was just as industrious outside school as in. We are well represented in nearly all school functions with members in the Spray,ā as Junii r Achievement reporters, Key Club members, and mem¬ bers of the many other school āsponsored activities. Following the election of class officers and executive board, it was decided that selling fruit cakes would be our class project. Our prom, which was entitled, Arabian Nightsā will always remain as a highlight in our high school days. As our Junior year came to a close we were met face to face with Junior Day. The Class of 1966 can be very grateful for the fine job the class officers and execu¬ tive board have done in hand¬ ling our class throughout the past year. In addition to ar¬ ranging class projects, the of¬ ficers made preparations for the Senior Prom and many other Senior functions. The fine qualities of leadership and responsibility that our officers have exemplified will always be remembered in the years which follow. We sincerely appreciate their selflessness in giving of their time, advice, and toil. Iflrs. Bias Hlr. j ahtitkt Class Ipstoru In September 1962, we, the class of 1966, young, eager, and nervous, entered Fairhaven High School as Freshmen. We watched the self-assured Seniors with ill-disguised envy as we struggled to join the mainstream of life at F.H.S. One of our first acts as a class was the election of officers. They were: Sandra Mor¬ ris, President; Suellen Aiken, Vice President; JoAnn Kidd, Secretary; and Anne Hayes, Treasurer. Our Executive Board members were Holli Maxfield, Kathy Foley, Margaret Carpenter, Carole Filipek, Nancy Morris, and Jane Hiller. Although the day when we would be Seniors seemed eons away, we soon began preparing for that day by selling candy as a class project. The year passed quickly, perhaps too quickly as we look back now, and we were soon Sopho¬ mores. Our Sophomore year was a difficult one as we were caught between two extremesāno longer insecure Freshmen ' we-still lacked the all-important upperclassman status. Our class officers during this challenging year were: Sandra Morris, President; JoAnn Kidd, Vice President; Suellen Aiken, Secre¬ tary; and Joyce Isherwood, Treasurer. Assisting them was the Executive Board comprised of Ann Delano, Kathy Foley, Peggy Bouley, Patrick Lang, and David McCombe. We repeated the success of the previous year by again selling candy as a class project. As Juniors we received our class rings early in October. These were the tangible confirmation of our positions as upperclassmen. Our officers for this busy and rewarding year were: Sandra Morris, President; Suellen Aiken, Vice President; Susan Ross, Secretary; and JoAnn Kidd, Treasurer; Randall Leisey, Peggy Bouley, Ann Delano, Kathy Foley, and Joyce Renaud made up the Executive Board. Our new, but highly successful project was the sale of Christmas Fruit Cakes. In March, several of our best students were recognized in the solemn ceremonies of the Honor Society Initiation. The new members were: Linda Fisher, President; Jane Hiller, Vice President; Margaret Car- penter, Secretary; Karen Madeira, Teasurer; Wayne Cardoza, Roger Lussier, Dara Johnson, and David McCombe. On May 7th, the Land of the Midnight Sun materialized in the Larch Avenue Auditorium for our Junior Prom. The queen for this magic and fanciful evening was Elsie Sylvia, and Peggy Bouley was her lady-in-waiting. Sandra Morris, JoAnn Kidd, Susan Ross, Andrea Davignon, Dona Wetherbee, Suellen Aiken, and Ann Delano comprised the queenās court. Junior Day was a turning point in our high school years. Jane Hiller received the College Club Book Award, and Randall Leisey received the Harvard Club Book Award. The excitement was hushed for a moment as our president, representing our class, accepted the symbolic mantle of leadership from the graduating Senior president. We were momentarily sobered by the responsibilities we were preparing to shoulder, and not a few of us were looking ahead for the first time toward our graduations with sadness. As Seniors, we had gained the poise and assurance which had seemed so remote three years ago. Our days were busy, and we had little time for reminis¬ cence. Our elected officers were: Randall Leisey, President; Sandra Morris, Vice President; Patrick Lang, Secretary; Suellen Aiken, Treasurer. Peggy Bouley, Ann Delano, Jane Hiller, Joyce Isherwood, and David McCombe made up the Executive Board. Our Senior Play, The Red Spider, directed by Miss Cynthia Messier, was presented March 18, 1966. To everyoneās delight, it was a complete success. From this time on, we were caught up in preparations for our graduation activities. With the Senior Prom, held on June 3rd, the annual Senior Banquet, the Solemn Vesper Service of June 12th, and finally with our Commencement Exercises on June 15th, we terminated our high school careers. It is difficult to express the varied emotions which we felt as we lived those two weeks in June. Sadness, regret, anticipation, and hope filled us all. None of us will ever forget the happiness we lived here, nor the dreams we fulfilled here at Fairhaven High. 93 (Jlkss Mill We, the graduates of Fairhaven High School, being of sound mind and body, do hereby ordain and establish the following as the last will and testament of the Class of 1966 . We look back , With fond memories At our high school years. But the world is Calling us, and we are Calling the world. We shall walk slowly out Of the halls of F.H.S. Visions of familiar rooms And friendly faces Will flood our minds. But also streaming into our minds Will come rays of lightā Hopes, dreams, ideals Yet to be fulfilled. We have finished our high school Years, we have climbed another Mountain, and we can now See a little more clearly The path to the summit Of the greatest mountainā Life. L- y-5 3 f OPER 0 C .
