Mathematics and Science. Zhrcsholds of Discovery Mathematics, the language of the sciences, is the key to our entire way of life. It plays a large part in every activity, from managing a household to national defense. Our Mathematics Department prepares Fairhaven students for further study in colleges or business schools and for meeting mathematical requirements at home or on the job. ROBERT C. LAWTON B.E., Ed.M. Mr. Lawton is the head of our Mathematics Department. A graduate of Northeastern Uni¬ versity and Boston University, he enjoys garden¬ ing and listening to his hi-fi. IONA J. KUNZ B.S. A graduate of Simmons College, Mrs. Kunz teaches mathematics. She varies her instruction with spirited verse and interesting stories. She cites her interests as adolescents, math, literature, gardening, sailing, poetry, art, knitting, and cook¬ ing. JOHN G. MALCOLM B.S. Mr. Malcolm, a teacher of mathematics, is a graduate of New Bedford Institute of Tech¬ nology. He enjoys boating and fishing. 18

I Science is the most rapidly expanding field of human endeavor. It was science that led mankind out of the caves, and it is science that today leads him out into space. We, as future citizens, must understand the world of science if we are to guide our country in the years to come. General science, biology, chemistry, and physics are the courses presented by our Science Department. RAYMOND G. BOYCE B.S., M.Ed. Mr. Boyce, head of the Science Department, attended Fitchburg State College, Bridgewater State College, and Boston College. He teaches chemistry and is interested in rare rock specimens. MELVIN ENTIN B.S. Mr. Entin, a teacher of biology, is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island. He is also our Director of Athletics and Physical Education. Among his interests are woodworking, garden¬ ing, and fishing. VIRGINIA KOWAL B.A. Miss Kowal is an alumna of the University of Massachusetts. She teaches biology and United States history. Miss Kowal enjoys gardening, rais¬ ing animals, and painting. FERNANDO SILVA B.S. Mr. Silva, an alumnus of New Bedford Institute of Technology, teaches physics and chemistry. In his spare time he enjoys hunting, fishing, and carpentry. 19
