Principal’s Message “The whole life of man is but a point of time, let us enjoy it, therefore, while it lasts and not spend it to no purpose.” “On the Education of Children ’ ' ’—Plutarch Almost two thousand years ago the Greek philosopher, Plutarch, reminded parents that the span of a man’s life was but a brief moment when measured against the agelessness of time. He admonished them to teach their children to act with a purpose so that they might enjoy what life had to offer. A philosopher living two thousand years before Plutarch might well have said the same thing. The brevity of life was as inescapable then as it is today and as it will be tomorrow. It is not illogical to associate education and time with life. In fact, if we pause and reflect we realize that our education has come about only because there was time for it. If we have had a purpose, then surely time has brought some enjoyment to us. It may be the simple pleasure of knowing someone with whom we share a common interest, or it may be the warmth of satisfaction that comes from solving a difficult problem. What¬ ever it is, time in its passing has borne it. As we go through our daily cycle from dawn to dawn, it may seem that what we do has little significance for us or the world. Yet, even the least event has a meaning although we may not grasp it until time has added its dimension. So it is with the affairs of men. Time becomes the window through which we see the past. This past of yesterday we cannot govern, but the past of tomorrow is ours to shape as we will. As we wish, time can reveal a life that bears our mark for good. To you, Class of 1964, I commend this thought of Plutarch. Lay hold on a purpose so that life may bring you the joy of something well done. Remember, time alone will measure the worth of what you do today. 6
