“
. . . Time The hourglass is full. We are about to enter upon a new phase of life, A phase embracing memories as yet unknown. Moments as yet unlived, events as yet unexperienced. These wdl constitute our high school years. Zke Mutties to Hiatt dairkavett, Massachusetts Zime... Zhe Measure of Events, Moments and 2 Memories ‘ It was here at Hyannis that he loved to sail, swim, and ramble with Jackie, Caroline, and John-John.” The Class of 1964 humbly and respect¬ fully dedicates this HUTTLESTONIAN to the late John Fitzgerald Kennedy, who lost his life in the service of his country. With re¬ lentless efforts he strove to fortify freedom and to attain world peace; with strength and understanding he laid the foundation for a new era. The total impact of President Kennedy’s personality on the nation was great. He was the epitome of what America stands for— style, vigor, curiosity, intellectual pursuits, and strength; qualities which are necessary to keep a nation from becoming decadent. Let President Kennedy be forever re¬ membered as one who loved the forgotten, the downtrodden, the aged, and the outcast. His life was dedicated to helping them strive for equality, regardless of race, creed, or color. Now we as young adults must carry out the fine goals he set for himself and the nation. Before my term has ended, we shall have tested anew whether a nation organized and governed such as ours can endure. The outcome is by no means certain. The answers are by no means clear.” 4 “Profile in Courage” “If each of us could have the conviction and courage to take upon ourselves a fraction of the burdens that he was willing to bear while alive, perhaps—in time to come—the disgrace of his murder might seem less overpowering and the purpose of his life realized.” —ELLEN JO PRESS 5 Principal’s Message “The whole life of man is but a point of time, let us enjoy it, therefore, while it lasts and not spend it to no purpose.” “On the Education of Children ’ ' ’—Plutarch Almost two thousand years ago the Greek philosopher, Plutarch, reminded parents that the span of a man’s life was but a brief moment when measured against the agelessness of time. He admonished them to teach their children to act with a purpose so that they might enjoy what life had to offer. A philosopher living two thousand years before Plutarch might well have said the same thing. The brevity of life was as inescapable then as it is today and as it will be tomorrow. It is not illogical to associate education and time with life. In fact, if we pause and reflect we realize that our education has come about only because there was time for it. If we have had a purpose, then surely time has brought some enjoyment to us. It may be the simple pleasure of knowing someone with whom we share a common interest, or it may be the warmth of satisfaction that comes from solving a difficult problem. What¬ ever it is, time in its passing has borne it. As we go through our daily cycle from dawn to dawn, it may seem that what we do has little significance for us or the world. Yet, even the least event has a meaning although we may not grasp it until time has added its dimension. So it is with the affairs of men. Time becomes the window through which we see the past. This past of yesterday we cannot govern, but the past of tomorrow is ours to shape as we will. As we wish, time can reveal a life that bears our mark for good. To you, Class of 1964, I commend this thought of Plutarch. Lay hold on a purpose so that life may bring you the joy of something well done. Remember, time alone will measure the worth of what you do today. 6 Jh Appreciation We would like to thank our class advisors for successfully guiding us through four formative years of high school. For their selfless efforts in aiding and supervising our class projects and dances, we express our deepest gratitude and appreciation. MRS. BRASOR MR. Without this valu¬ able tool we would still be living in caves. Ever since man first started counting on his fingers, mathematics has played an ever increasing role in his life. Today, mathematics is so in¬ grained in the life of every American that one could not imagine life with¬ out it. Mathematics helps feed us, clothe us, keep us warm, create adequate transportation, and bring health and se¬ curity to all Americans. We should all realize the importance of mathematics in our lives, and we should support the men who teach this wonderful subject and those who use it to our advantage. I wonder if Einstein started like this?! “Zhe History of Js Science Jtsclf ” Today’s modern civilization is the result of many years of scien¬ tific advance. Breakthroughs, such as man’s first venture into space, occur only as a result of organized research. We are greatly dependent on science, as it provides us with the means for maintaining society as we know it. Preparation in lab¬ oratory sciences gives students an opportunity to aid in the future maintenance and bettering of our high standards of living. ' It was a class to be remembered for a long time to come because it was our class—• the Class of 1964. We were all looking forward to an auspicious career as high school students. We chose our first class officers with great care because we realized that they were to be our representatives. Jane Delano, Edward Locke, David Roberts, and Holly Dixon took the positions of President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer re¬ spectively. Our Executive Board members were Kathy Medeiros, Penny Baker, Carlos Ribeiro, Raymond Rose, and David Baker. We were introduced to our class advisors, Mr. Albritton, Mrs. Robinson, Mrs. Brasor, and Mr. Arieta. They were to guide us throughout the four years of high school, assisting with our class projects and dances. In our Freshman year we sold Christmas fruit cakes. Our Sophomore year was filled with anticipation. We were no longer the newest class in the school, and we were soon to be upperclassmen. Our class officers were Jane Delano, President; Edward Locke, Vice-President; Holly Dixon, Secretary; and Peter Renfree, Treasurer. Our Executive Board was comprised of Steve Bouley, Patricia Lamarre, Sheila Morgan, Linda Risdal, and Bernard Labbe. Our class project for the Sophomore year was in alliance with our town’s Sesqui-centennial. We sold commemora¬ tive stationery printed with scenes of the town. Our class officers officiated in design- % ing our new class rings. Our Junior year approached us swiftly. We were finally upperclassmen, and our ideals and desires were definitely being conceived. Our class officers were once again elected: Jane Delano, President; Steve Bouley, Vice-President; Michael Henriques, Secretary; and Edward Locke, Treasurer. Our Executive Board members were Sheila Morgan, Bernard Labbe, Anne Gardella, Linda Risdal, and Peter Renfree. We received our class rings early in the year and were very pleased with them. We continued selling stationery as our class project because it had been so successful in the previous year. Our Junior Prom was held on May 3 in the Larch Avenue Auditorium. The theme was Springtime in the Alps.” The dance was a very big success, and the ulti¬ mate moment of the evening was reached when the Queen and her court were an¬ nounced. Jane Delano was our radiant Queen and Sheila Morgan her lovely lady-in- waiting. The Queen’s court was comprised of Holly Dixon, Linda Risdal, Louise Wojcik, Susan Partington, Georgia Daignault, Jane Moss, and Kathy Medeiros. Late in the }ear, three of our classmates were chosen to be cheerleaders. They were Louise Wojcik, Holly Dixon, and Marilyn Green. Junior Day was perhaps the biggest day of the year. It was then that we were elevated to the position of Seniors. We be¬ came the leaders of the school and representatives of our town’s fine youth. Our Senior year opened on a happy note. Our class officers were elected: Jane Delano, President; Joseph Amaral, Vice-President; Holly Dixon, Secretary; and Ed¬ ward Hartigan, Treasurer. The Executive Board was comprised of Jane Moss, Linda Risdal, Louise Wojcik, Carlos Ribeiro, and Shirley Medeiros. In November we were all shocked to hear of the assassination of our President, John Fitzgerald Kennedy. We all felt a deep personal regret at his loss, but we were soon to realize how strong our ideals had become because of it. We realized the re¬ sponsibilities we had facing us, and we were all determined to fulfill them. Our Senior Play, “One Horrible Night,” was held on March 20. Its success was very rewarding to everyone. The annual Senior Banquet took place at the New Bedford Hotel. One of the biggest events of the year was our Senior Prom, held in the Gold Room of the New Bedford Hotel. At the solemn Commencement Exercises on June 10, we realized that our high school career had tome to an end. Time had made the Class of 1964 history. Class Officers The Class of 1964 can be very grateful for the fine job the class officers and executive board have done in handling our class throughout the past year. In addition to arranging class projects, the officers made preparations for the Senior Prom and many other Senior functions. The fine qualities of leadership and responsibility that our officers have exemplified will always be remem¬ bered in the years which follow. 1 1 1 fjm l@5j|5pA: V: I 1 i at SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS: FRONT: Holly Dixon, Secretary; Jane Delano, President. Many former residents are returning from all over the world to witness this celebration, making Fort Phoenix a sister base to Cape Kennedy. The Welcoming Committee, headed by Patricia Lamarre and Jane Moss, was on hand to greet Bernard Labbe and Cathy Wershey who arrived from Washington, D.C., having been put in charge of protocol. Their office has been set up at the New Fairhaven Hotel, operated by Lawrance Patasini, who incidentally is still sporting his black-and-white saddle shoes. The local chairman, attorneys, Jane Delano and Edward I oeke, have made plans to provide facilities for the 1,000,000 visitors expected. Admiral Peter Renfree of the U.S. Navy reports that he will have his entire fleet at the Fairhaven Harbor, and Captain Michael Henriques of the U.S. Air Force is preparing to have his squadron piloted by former Fairhavenites Fred Cushing, Joseph Perry, Armand Boulanger, Lynn Jason, Roger Surprenant, Frank Lang- iano, Gary Edwards, and Tom Cabral participate in the dedication. Firechief Joseph Amaral has his crew Butch Ferland, Sonny Avila, and Ed Hartigan preparing for all emergencies. Susan York and Sheila Morgan, assistant directors of medical care, have added to their staff: Veterinarian, Helen Vincent; Lab-technician, Linda Risdal; and Physical Therapist, Leslye Shurtleff. Earlier today disc-jockey Jim Madruga announced that Gordon Bennett. U.S. Ambassador to France; Franz Eberhard, Austrian Diplomat; Rod Corson, overseas representative of American cars; and Lisa Wright, Peace Co rps Administrator have arrived at the Fairhaven Airport to join in the festivities. Bonnie Gifford, assistant editor of the Fairhaven Times, has Janice Fletcher, international interpreter, pre¬ paring the elaborate program of entertainment. Heading the list of the many celebrities are the “Space Bugs;” Tim Cunningham, Sig Haines, and Steve Blodgett; renowned violinists, Carolyn Costa and Betty Furtado; famed pianist, Carol-Ann Hesketh; comedian, Steve Bouley; and popular singer, Laverne Texeira. The Fairhaven Country Club, operated by Walter Harrison and managed by William Duffy, has added to their personnel Louise Wojcik. Sue Partington, Georgia Daignault, and I aLoni Leisey as social directors, and Lee Twarog as receptionist to aid in the influx of additional business. The original plans of the interplanetary stop-off were engineered by Professors of Mathematics, JoAnn McKinney and Edward Lefkowitz in collaboration with artist Penny Ba ' ker. All are instrumentally responsible for the world-wide attention our town is receiving. This is bound to be an eventful and history-making day. See you all at the Take-off! 83 American Tield Service uy,h The American Field Service is an organization designed to open wide the doors of increased understanding among nations. Fairhaven High School was especially lucky this year to have Franz Eberhard of St. Stefan, Austria, as its AFS representative. Fran, as he was called by his friends, was a delightful addition to the student body. He was extremely successful academically and displayed his musical abilities by playing with the band. He stayed with the Charles Faria family and attended school with his American brother, Charlie. Fran greatly enjoyed his stay in the United States. He plans to attend the University of Vienna and become a diplomat. All of Fran’s American friends hope that his ambition is real¬ ized so that one day he may again re¬ turn to Fairhaven. 84 “The Eberhard” Fran often participated in ar¬ ranging AFS activities. Here, he and Ray Rose discuss the AFS Hootenanny. The auditorium had been beautifully decorated with colorful flowers, streamers, and Swiss yodelers. We greeted our patrons and patronesses and then waltzed to the delightful music of Ray Besse’s orchestra. Jane Delano was crowned Queen by Linda Martin, last year’s Queen, amidst a lovely stage of butterflies, trees, and flowers. The Queen’s gracious court consisted of Sheila Mor¬ gan, lady-in-waiting, accom¬ panied by Linda Risdal, Louise Wojcik, Georgia Daignault, Susan Partington, Kathy Me¬ deiros, Jane Moss, and Holly Dixon. Following the corona¬ tion, the dancers participated in a grand march led by Steve Bouley and his lovely date. Jreskman Class In September their faces showed confusion and bewilderment. For many, going from a fairly small junior high, probably was quite confusing. As the year rapidly progressed, the Freshmen had become ac¬ customed to Fairhaven High School’s procedures. Following the election of class officers and exec¬ utive board a class project was selected. This project of selling magazines went over quite well with the class. This project and school activities have made the Freshmen feel a part of the school. “Well, now that we ’re in—where do we go?” i nn EXECUTIVE BOARD: Warren Livesley, Beverly Collins, Thomas Carvalho, Donna Howard, and Henry Bernier. 101 Our Class Officers are: Sandy Morris, JoAnn Kidd, Suellen Aiken, Joyce Isherwood. Sophomore Class We finished our Freshman year at Fairhaven High and returned last fall as Sophomores—“wise fools.” The Class of ’66 entered school once again, anticipating V new experiences and seeking new knowl¬ edge. There were times when we despaired —during the traditional Sophomore slump, when vacations weren’t long enough, when biology tests were too hard,—but we made it! We have had many good times too, as the “in between” class. Now, as we look back, we see that our Sophomore year has actually flown by. As time goes onward however, so we do. We will start our first year as upperclassmen with mixed feelings, but the greatest of these will be hope for the future. 102 Sophomores have diversified . . . “We couldn’t sell them so we ate them!” The top Sophomore candy salesmen are: David Mc- Combe, Susan Nicholson, and Nancy Ruest. . . . extracurricular activities? ! ? ! junior Class I think all the Juniors will agree that this year was the best we’ve had. We didn’t have as many responsibili¬ ties as Seniors, yet we were still up¬ perclassmen. One of the first high points of our year was obtaining our class rings. Then, and only then, we were genuine upperclassmen. We buckled right down to work and came up with a good class proj¬ ect, selling fruitcakes. Our success in this venture can be explained by a fine class spirit and the great amount of help we received from Mr. Silva, our class advisor. Too soon, our Junior year came to a close. These three runners returned to Boston the following week and brought home a seventh place finish. The teams that competed were from the entire state. Fairhaven High School’s finish was the best of any school in southern Massachusetts. In the New England Meet held at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, Allen Paten¬ aude finished third in the 880, and Steve Vining finished sixth in the 440. John Wojcik on his way to a second place finish in the Grand State Meet. Winter Zrack 1964 The winter track team under the direction of Coach Carter which competed in the Southeastern Massachusetts Winter Track league, did well this season. Although the team did not have a winning season, in dual meets, they finished third in the Class D Meet at Boston Garden and fourth in the League Meet. Allen Patenaude was the number one performer for the team. He compiled victories in the 600 at the Y.M.C.A. Meet, the 1000 at the Class D Meet and the league Meet, and a third place fin¬ ish at the B.A.A. games. In the Class D Meet, John Wojcik won the 2-mile, while the relay team of Patasini, Mike Henriques, Joe Amaral, and Ronnie Howland finished second.
