As we, the youth of America, regard unsettled conditions in the world at present, we wonder what principles and standards we should uphold and represent. All of us are average American adolescents who lead normal lives, and who have been educated in the American atmosphere of freedom where we have the opportunity to express ourselves and to draw our own conclusions. Because of this, this year’s “Huttlestonian” Staff has decided to choose as our theme, American history and thought. It is, indeed, a great honor and privilege to be a citizen of America. During this momentous year of world upheavel, we have been led, more than ever to appreciate the free¬ dom and opportunity that America offers. We hope that the ideals of liberty, peace, and tolerance shall remain in our minds to guide us in the momentous decisions and responsibilities which will be ours in the future. You will note that our theme is illustrated throughout this edition by various quotations gleaned from government documents and works of such great American writers and thinkers as Franklin, Jefferson, and Thoreau. These quotations remind us that to be an American gives us privileges but demands of us certain basic responsibilities as well. In addition, of course, to the serious purpose just indicated, we want our book to present a clear and accurate picture of Fairhaven High School — its daily academic life and activities. If we have succeeded in these two purposes, we shall feel that our yearbook has been a worthwhile project. Diana Laycock, ’57 Editor-in-Chief
