FAIRHAVEN HIGH SCHOOL OFFICE OF THE PRINCIPAL To the Class of 1957: Your yearbook has a patriotic theme. That is good. Ever since you entered the first grade, your teachers have tried to help you appre¬ ciate what America means. The motto of our school is “The noblest motive is the public good.” The meaning of these simple words is clear. To put them into practice calls for the kind of dedication that makes patriots. The history of America is full of people whom we regard as patriots. The thing that made them patriots was that they chose to serve their country when they might have served themselves. Patriotic service is often costly. Speaking for one group, Thomas Jefferson said they pledged to each other their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. Honor means principles so important that conduct contrary to these standards is unthinkable. Fortunes. Jefferson meant that even if it cost them all they pos¬ sessed, they would be loyal to the cause for which they were striving. Lives. Many families know what it means to have one of their own give his young life to help preserve the American ideal of freedom and fair play. I hope you will not be called upon to die for your country, but I expect you to be willing to live for it. My best wishes go with you as you leave our school to continue to face the great challenge of trying to be worthy of our American heritage. Sincerely, Chester M. Downing, Principal
