The Live Aid concert performed simulta- neously in London and Philadelphia in July broad- cast world-wide additionally raising S72 million. Geldof won the Nobel Peace Price for his efforts. Inspired by Geldofs endeavors. the United States has initiated its own contributions to Africa and at home with USA for Africa . Farm Aid. Here, a white man runs from a jeering group of stonethrowing blacks in downtown Johannes- burg as widespread violence continued to brea- kout throughout the country. '-1' 'tmmm-s. A series of devastating earthquakes fumbled through Mexico City in September sending the death toll into the thousands. Few in the metropolitan area of 18 million escaped the effects of the first quake, which registered 8.1 on the Richter scaleg or the second quake, which measured 7.5. A Challenge N01 Mel The Space Shuttle Challenger exploded only 74 seconds after take off at 11:38 a.m. from Cape Canaveral on January 28, 1986. All seven crew members were killed including Christa McAuliffe, a Concord, New Hampshire high school teacher selected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administra- tion to be the first citizen observer to ride the space shuttle. The apparent cause for the disaster was a flame from the right-hand solid fuel booster rocket which lead to the eventu- al explosion.

FERRARO AT FAIRFIELD Geraldine Ferraro, 1984 Vice-Presiden- tial nominee for the Democratic ticket lead by Walter Mondale, spoke out against intolerance of women at Fairfield University in an Oak Room lecture. A three time Representative of the House from Queens, Ms. Ferraro became the first female to ever run on the Presiden- tial ticket. She pointed out to the Oak Room crowd that her running was aimed at promoting women's rights and their equality with men. During her lecture, she criticized the Reagan administration for its stand on Women's rights and im- plored all listeners to carry on the pro- 11:5 1 ff L 6 gress of the feminist movement to further combat intol- 1 erance of women in the United States. Fairfield University students elected Michael Miller to succeed Jim English as the new student body president. English held that post as a senior for the entire academic year and enjoyed what onlookers term a successful presidency. President Miller hopes to improve upon the programming of events by F.U.S.A.
