'-1' 'tmmm-s. A series of devastating earthquakes fumbled through Mexico City in September sending the death toll into the thousands. Few in the metropolitan area of 18 million escaped the effects of the first quake, which registered 8.1 on the Richter scaleg or the second quake, which measured 7.5. A Challenge N01 Mel The Space Shuttle Challenger exploded only 74 seconds after take off at 11:38 a.m. from Cape Canaveral on January 28, 1986. All seven crew members were killed including Christa McAuliffe, a Concord, New Hampshire high school teacher selected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administra- tion to be the first citizen observer to ride the space shuttle. The apparent cause for the disaster was a flame from the right-hand solid fuel booster rocket which lead to the eventu- al explosion.

He s A Mad Dog On March 23, 1986. a U.S. Navy task force began conducting freedom of navigation exercises in the disputed waters of the Gulf of Sidra off the coast of Libya. Libya in turn fired anti-aircraft missiles at American war planes. The U.S. responded by attacking a number of ships and a missile installation on the Libyan mainland. Libya claimed that it shot down three American jets and that the U.S. had attempted but failed to bomb a single civilian ship. The U.S. reported that all Libyan missiles had missed their targets and that there were no Ameri- can casualties. The U.S. had success- fully hit two Libyan navy ships with an unknown number of casualties. On April 14, the U.S. performed a series of air strikes on terrorist cen- ters . The decision came due to the bombing nine days earlier of a West Berlin discotheque in which an American serviceman and a Turkish woman were killed and more than 200 people wounded. Americans planes struck five Libyan bases. using bombers that took off from an Ameri- can Air Base in Britain. Fifteen A-6 planes hit two targets near Benghazi and eighteen F-1 ll bombers that hit Tripoli, including the residence of Qaddafi. Subsequent terrorist at- tacks by Libya have been a bomb in A flight- 840 from Rome to Athens in which four passengers were killed as well as a terrorist attempt in London's Heathrow Airport. The Live Aid concert performed simulta- neously in London and Philadelphia in July broad- cast world-wide additionally raising S72 million. Geldof won the Nobel Peace Price for his efforts. Inspired by Geldofs endeavors. the United States has initiated its own contributions to Africa and at home with USA for Africa . Farm Aid.
