He s A Mad Dog On March 23, 1986. a U.S. Navy task force began conducting freedom of navigation exercises in the disputed waters of the Gulf of Sidra off the coast of Libya. Libya in turn fired anti-aircraft missiles at American war planes. The U.S. responded by attacking a number of ships and a missile installation on the Libyan mainland. Libya claimed that it shot down three American jets and that the U.S. had attempted but failed to bomb a single civilian ship. The U.S. reported that all Libyan missiles had missed their targets and that there were no Ameri- can casualties. The U.S. had success- fully hit two Libyan navy ships with an unknown number of casualties. On April 14, the U.S. performed a series of air strikes on terrorist cen- ters . The decision came due to the bombing nine days earlier of a West Berlin discotheque in which an American serviceman and a Turkish woman were killed and more than 200 people wounded. Americans planes struck five Libyan bases. using bombers that took off from an Ameri- can Air Base in Britain. Fifteen A-6 planes hit two targets near Benghazi and eighteen F-1 ll bombers that hit Tripoli, including the residence of Qaddafi. Subsequent terrorist at- tacks by Libya have been a bomb in A flight- 840 from Rome to Athens in which four passengers were killed as well as a terrorist attempt in London's Heathrow Airport. During that meeting these great leaders discussed the U.S.S.R. withdraw- ing its troops from Afghanistan, but only if that country remained under Soviet control. Other issues included the U.S. ultimately removing all its intermediate-range missiles from Western Europe and the cancellation of Star Wars. Talks came to a sudden halt in April when it was discovered that U.S. had continued nuclear testing. You Say You Want A Revolution When Phillipine President Ferdinand Marcos scheduled an election in February. he grossly underestimated the mass appeal of his housewife opponent. Corazon Acquino. As a result of an unpredicted victory. Acquino took the presidency of the Phillipines to revenge her husbands unlawful murder at the Manila airport and bring government back to the hands ofthe people. Question and skepticism rest with how effectively Acquino vvill lead her nation. Is it possible to alter both economically and socially. a state that has been manipu- lated by the tyranny ofa dictator like Marcos?
