He was a mentor, a friend, and a mathematics pro- fessor. He was always ready to buoy our sagging spirits with his great sense of humor. He also cared about all people everywhere. ln World War ll he served in the Army Medical Corps, and recently re- ceived the Bronze Star. More recently, he collected books for the Jesuit University in Brazil. Locally, he brought ioy to school children each Christmas by dressing as Santa Claus. For the times we shared . . . Remember sneaking in with flashlights and playing hide and seek and getting thrown out by Security? Remember the Japanese gardens? That was the tranquil place on campus where students could meditate or . . . Remember when the Faculty Office Building became F.O.B. and smelled so new it made you nauseous? I think all of us must have experienced at least one floor party whether we wanted to or not. Remember Gonzaga lIl's 2001 party, grain alcohol in garbage cans, the llRoost, Loyala Il's Hawaiian party, Northwest IV's beach party with the sand and mini-pool in the lounge? Regis IV made dorm history when it turned co-ed. Somebody said they put the girls up there to 'lcalm down those boys. Anyone that lived in Regis freshman year knows what lldorm damage meant to Regis IV. Of course Regis IV also became famous for their l'Meet the Sheep party. Baaaaa. Were there really ten kegs flowing from each bathroom? Remember the llcollectors that use to come around asking people to sign up for their floor's party? Back then it was two or three dollars. Or how about Dorm picnics where the kegs ran dry before your hamburger was cooked. And how could we forget the infamous quad water fights and the muddy waters that flew out of garbage cans. Remember Stagmania and the Super Fan? What happened? Remember when you had to wait in line to get into the Stag-her Inn on a Thursday night? Are you able to count how many times you stood outside Campion in your slippers Freshman year? Funny, they never did find out who pulled all those fire alarms. If it wasn't people from Campion out in their PJ's in the wee hours of the morning, it was those loveable loyolites celebrating another morning event. Have any couches been burned in the quad lately? May Day meant camel rides, games, contests, music, dancing and as much beer that could flow out of those trucks . . . and then some. llfg g laura S. Angus Marketing L.,- B l l l , .loan G. As a citizen who had strong anti-nuclear views and strong anti-Reagan views, I was able to get the nomination essentially because no professional politician wanted it. McKinney had won seven straight elections since i970 and the closest any opponent ever came in a presidential election year was to get 37 percent of the vote. I had never even thought of running for political office before, since I enioyed operating as a citizen activist on the edges of the political system, but since no opposition was developing in the 'Isafe district, I felt that it was a great opportunity to discuss national issues and to represent a progressive constituen- cy. I gave l20 speeches and traveled 6,000 miles in the district. McKinney, of course got 70W: of the vote and I got 30'Ka. He raised about S3 I6,000 and I raised Sl6,000. It was a great experience as I taught four American government courses in the fall and ran for Congress. I recommend the experience to every citizen. - Dr. John Orman STAG-I-IER INN During my first year at the Stag- . her Inn, I worked at the doorcheck- ing ID's for the legal drinking age. Because there was always a mini- mum of two people working at the door, there was never a quiet mo- ment. Between the Stag-her enter- tainment, the patrons, games, talk- ing and reading the MIRROR, we were kept busy with smiles and laughter. My second year at the Stag-her I worked as a waitress. Through waitressing I have become friendly not only with my student co-workers but with the Graduate Assis- tants, teachers, fellow students and other patrons as well. Of course the bartenders had lust as much fun as the workers at the door and the table attendants. They were also often helpful with whatever entertainment had been scheduled for the night. Entertainment is geared to the students' desires. In the past there have been DJ's, bands, comedians, Open Microphone, DYNASTY, televised sports and FairfieId's own version of many television game shows. Not only does the Stag-her Inn provide beer, wine and other foods and drinks, but most importantly a place to get together with old friends and meet new friends. - Katie Hunt Y' CF L6 .f K 1' Carol E. Bill put the pimple medicine all over his face before he went to bed and when he woke up he couldn't open his mouth because the glue dried on his face. It took him three days to finally peel it all off. . . . was when my roommate Jeanne got peeped at by Peeping Tom while taking a shower. . . . It was my first day at Fairfield as a transfer student. I didn't know a soul and naturally I was late for my first class. When I finally arrived at my classroom all the desks were filled except for one in the very front row. I actually stood in the hall taking notes for fear the professor would hold my tardiness against me for the rest of the semester. When I finally did gather the courage to go into the room it was only to dis- cover, after I had displaced a girl's broken leg from a chair so I could sit, that the professor was not only hard of hearing but also blind. I have never, nor will I ever, stand outside a classroom again. . . . was capsizing a sailboat with Anne at a regatta at Brown in the middle of winter. Since then the sailing team only races in relatively warm weather. s TIMES ARE A Cl-IANOIN' - Part ll, Sophomore Year Then Sophomore year came. The newness of campus life wore off yet times kept on a changin'. Seilers food got worse and the drinking age went up to nineteen. They said, NNO MORE FLOOR PARTlES. But that was OK because we can have IMPROMPTUS. u6O, 30, lO and no more than 50 people in your room and no spilling into the hallway. land they weren't talking about the beerl. And sometimes we even got away with two kegs and some spillage. The drinking age wasn't the only thing that changed. Town I-louses grew over by Julie Hall and Cs became C minuses. Northwest changed to Jogues and llthe Orient became Kostka and Claver. Bellarmine turned into a million-dollar office building and the F.O.B. courtyard welcomed VEE-l. Oakrooms still sold out and the beer kept flowing. Dances were B.Y.O.B. and concerts were Friday night in the gym before Dogwoods. Fairfield continued to ship the entire population of l.oyola dorm to Sher- wood Island on uOpen House day. And the Loyolites continued having their morning events, and added Aristotle's birthday to their calendars. Who said they weren't humanitarians? And on May Day it didn't rain. No sooner had I put my bags down, I received the bad news. l'Fran, the administration is livid over Commencement problems . . . oh, and the Town Board of Health may search student beach houses and evict students . . . oh, and by the way, FUSA has an Sl8,000 deficit. You're kidding. ulNlOpe. As I look back on that day, I am surprised FUSA survived. I am proud of the students who banded together to solve those problems. The FUSA Cabinet and committee members did not stop there, though. A Bookfair saved students 52,000 in costs, accurate teacher evaluations were published, a Health Questionnaire helped improve Infirmary services. Don't forget Noisebustersl Throw in a new office and a Drive for Five establishing the first student endowment fund and it spells success. Even with severe budget restraints FUSA managed to attract Ralph Nader, Abbie l-Ioffman, Jerry Rubin, the Stompers, and yes, Beaver Brown put on a good show. The I-lalloween and Beach parties, DJ's in the Stag-her, trips to Broadway and Boston, and the rebirth of films on campus helped round out an active social calendar. lt amazes me how well the year went in light of those first dilemmas. I guess it's indic- ative ofthe Fairfield students who gave so much time and energy to many activities and causes. Our goals are iust, noble, beautiful and holy. - Fernando Cardenal, SJ. Minister of Education of Nicaragua uletter to My Friends December I984 H 4 ...dv-r A Recently the Fairfield University History Department determined that the first semes- ter core history requirement would introduce the student to the process of umodern- ization in Western Europe from the Renaissance through the French revolution and that the second semester would continue the investigation of this complicated, trouble- some and still on-going process in the I9th and 20th centuries in Western or Eastern Europe, the Americas or the Third World or in some combination of these. When I spent four months of my sabbatical leave in Nicaragua during the iunior year of the Class of I985, I had the privilege of studying first hand a modernizing revolution which, in reality, is attempting to move from the stagnant, semi-feudal, non-participa- tory, mobile dictatorship of the Somozas into a developing, participatory, mobile socially oriented polity. The Sandinistas, in effect, are hauling their society from the l6th century to the 20th in one giant tug. This means stepping on toes - those of the old elites, the middle class, the hierarchical church, Uncle Sam lwho for some reason is unwilling to sympathize with Nicaragua's efforts at modernization despite our own problems with a process that started for us some 400 years before Nicaragua's when Henry VIII confiscated the monasteries ll536I and which reached its dramatic trauma in our Civil War in which the industrial free labor North imposed its modernizing ideology by force on the semi-feudal slave-holding Southl. Even without considering the pathology of modern revolution, one must be sur- prised at the gentleness of Nicaragua's despite the severest provacations. The censorship which exists has come nowhere near the level of that perpetrated by our Alien and Sedition Acts Il798I which were passed at a comparable stage in our revolutionary process or by the Espionage Act of I9l9 which stands as a disgrace to the Anglo-Saxon tradition of civil liberty, a tradition which as no parallel in any part of Latin America. The roughing up of the Miskito Indians, who resent Sandinista attempts to integrate them into Nicaraguan society from which they have been historically separate, has been in part redressed by the Sandinistas' providing the Miskitos with books about their own history and culture in their own language for the first time in history. Given our history of relations with our own Ilndians' and with our treatment of our Japanese- Americans during World War II, it is hypocrisy to demand perfection from the Sandinistas. Looking back over the past year, I have to chuckle as I re- member my first days as an RA in Jogues. I was returning to the quad from Far East for the first time since freshman year, leaving behind the carpeted floors and air conditioning which had made it so appealing. I was even losing a semi-private bathroom, since my room, nestled in the basement of Northwest, was not priviledged to come equipped with a bathroom of its own. All of this was given up so that I could share my time and experience with thirteen new Freshmen. Having the smallest floor on campus had bothered me since I was hired in July. How would I program for them? How could I keep them interested? What about the alcohol policy? You know, its very difficult to hide beer in seven rooms, with a triple at the far end. Life in the basement turned out to be quite interesting. A community within the dorm community sprang up, and the students shared their fears, hopes, classes, and examinations with each other. A network developed in which each of the students would care and help each other. It was really great to watch it develop. One of my ini- tial goals, floor spirit, was achieved very early. As the year wore on, the bad mingled with the good. Kegs were discovered, disturbances erupted, weekends arrived. It was in these times that the building staff's unity showed through. Many evenings were spent wading through people and beer, with the hope that everyone was legal and no keg existed. Unfortunately, one or the other usually was the case. It took a lot of support from the other RA's in the building to get through the unpopular decisions which had to be made as part of the iob. We had our good times, too. Early in the year, while Chris Bruno, Chris Berruti, Linda Judge, Greg Betchkal and I were still getting to know each other, we assembled a dorm picnic. The cooperation among us on that day was an omen of things to come. It became common to see joint programs, like trips to Boston or Broadway, form and proceed successfully. Even more common was Popcorn and STAR TREK, weeknights late, when most everyone else in the building was studying or asleep. Those evenings went fast. Yet, the year would not have been the same without my guys. They were a bright group, both academically and socially. They caused their grief, but they also got some advice and taught me a great deal. The community spirit flourished, and culture as wide spread as East Boston slang and New Jersey Bruce Springsteen worship made the days ever bright. I suppose that's what happens on a floor of thirteen. As the year comes to a close, I only know too well the impact which the RA position held on me. Oh sure, tension existed, as rules are enforced. But, more importantly, friendships were made, new experiences were felt, a whole new dimension of campus life opened up, all from the basement of Jogues. Being an RA was more than a iob - it was an adventure. - TOr1y Caruso Gary E. McGovern S xxx Maureen A. McGrath Accounting Michael T. Mclieever Paiiiics 1? Rachel A. Although I had to get up a little earlier in order to catch the shuttle or drive to class, it's great to be able to get off campus to go home and leave some of the pressures behind. The whole experience of setting up a house and taking care of bills, repairs, cooking, and cleaning has been a real learning adventure. The most challenging of all has been the experience of living with others - each with her own schedule, personality, and habits. Although this challenge can be a difficult one at times, it has resulted in many great friendships and memories. ln addition, the proximity of so many other Fairfield U students allows everyone to remain close friends. life at the beach has contributed much to my Fairfield education and has given me a chance to be more independent, to learn from others, and to build lasting relationships. - Terry Cirillo l 'F 7- Q Ts in- Janeen M. ABRGAD IN ITALY My iunior year was spent studying abroad in Florence, Italy. It was appropriate that as a student majoring in Art History l ensconce myself in llthe Birthplace of the Renaissance. I had difficulty at first adiusting to life as a foreigner while simultaneously becoming acquainted with the sixty-eight other students in my program. The most cherished treasures I have from my llgrand tour are the iournals that I so meticulously maintained. They document the visions my perceptions were being inundated with, my initial arrival in Florence, the emotions I felt when I first saw Michelangelo's 'IDavid , the frustrations of a long distance relationship, the grandeur of the Parthenon, the comparisons of cultures, the shock of Egypt, Christmas in Bethlehem, descriptions of Paris, London, Austria, and Germany, how glad I was to be an American merely visiting Moscow, and stories about the many villages and cities I visited throughout all of ltaly. I would remind myself daily how fortunate I was to be in places of such beauty and his- tory, to be able to communicate with all cultures by means of a smile, to be independent and responsible, and to be storing up memories to last a lifetime. lt took me twenty-one years to arrive in Europe, and although it may be another twenty-one years before I return, the memories linger so vividly it's as though I never actually left. - Jane Confessore X ,3 ' io' 47 1 U F ' 11 -. Four years ago, we too left the security of our homes on a quest, each seeking something different. Some of us searched for the knowledge to succeed in a profession. Others sought indepen- dence. Still others, enioyment. Whatever the reason, we left far- flung places like Rochester, New York, Shelton, Connecticut, and Park Ridge, New Jersey, and made our way through the woods to Fairfield, where we came upon the cottages of Canisius and Bannow, Jogues and Claver. like Arthur, we have been carefully educated for our future by Fairfield Univesity, which is our Merlin, composed of both our teachers and our friends. Today, our academic training at Fairfield is complete. Sadly, some of our relationships with friends are over. We've learned much from them through their honesty, through their laughter, through their love. Their work is now complete. We must leave, and like Arthur, we must now apply what we have learned. Our Merlin has given us the knowledge we'll need to face the world. We know it's not going to be easy, so we must summon our courage and grasp firmly the sword that stands before us today. When we crossed this balcony, we were no longer the Senior Class. We are Alumni! Merlin has left us. The teaching part of him will remain as we found him, in Canisius and Bannow. That part who is friend will be lured away to Nimue's cave in far-flung places, but his gifts of knowledge and love will remain with us. And we shall always remember our Merlin, Fairfield University: our home of four years, the training ground for our Camelot. We're ready, Merlin! Your work is done! lr Oi ,,,ll 'N AVR fu 7 Commencement Address by the Honorable Wiliiom A. O'NeiII - I I ffm- . 'LU' 5 1 1 s , , uv , , 5 gf agua 1 M .
