It was in September of 1979 that I, as the new President of Fairfield, had the pleasure of welcoming you to the University. For me, and I hope for you, the past four years have been very happy ones. Together, you and I have been a vital part of an expanding university. We have witnessed its physical growth -- the new Faculty Office Building, a renovated Bellarmine, the recently constructed townhouse complex. There have also been other notable changes on campus -- new faculty members and administrators, new courses and programs, and even-new names for the gymnasium and thiormitories. Newness is the mostwsible aspect of this period of growth. Yet, amidst these changes there are values and tradi- tions that remain constant -- the Jesuit education that has enriched your academic and personal lives, the commitment to quality, and the spirit of enthusiasm that has been part of Fairfield since its beginning and that has characterized your class in a special way. These, too, are essential components of Fairfield's prosperity. As graduates you now take your place among the ranks of our newest alumni. May the values and traditions that are constant to Fairfield remain an integral part of your lives and may the new challenges, new risks, and new relationships that await you enable you to prosper. I hope that in the years ahead, when you return to the campus, you will find much that is familiar in the best of the Fairfield tradition. I hope, too, that you will find much that is new as a symbol of Fairfield's continued growth In 1979, we began together. I trust that we will continue together to work for the prosperity of Fairfield University. To all of you my heartfelt congratulations on your accomplishments during the past four years. May you find success and fulfillment in your new endeavors. Sincerely, Aloysiifls P. Kelley, S.d.E i President AP' v- A r r. F-. CMAAC Playoffs Dial Hurricane Classic 1-TECAC Championships field hockey The Fairfield University wom- en's field field hockey team con- cluded its winningest season ever with a 9-5 record. Prior to this season, last year's 5-5-3 mark had been the best effort the Lady Stags had ever managed. Despite hav- ing their finest showing of their brief history, the Fairfield stick- ers were unable to duplicate their feats of a year ago when they were selected for the AIAW regionals. The reason for their not having been tendered an invitation was that the Lady Stags, this season, jumped from Division III to the more competitive Division I level. Pacing Marilyn Rowe's club was freshman scoring sensation janet Kendall. Other top scorers on the Fairfield squad were Lauren Lam, Catherine Mulry, and Sue Harri- son. The Lady Stags were quite stingy on defense this past season and it was due in large part to the fine goal tending they received from Sue Weyant and Trish Hoff- man. Among the big wins this sea- son for Fairfield were a 7-0 sea- son's opening win at WesConn, and a 4-0 triumph against cross- town opponent Bridgeport. With a strong nucleus returning for next season, the Lady Stags ap- pear to be headed for a succession ofwinning campaigns. Losing just three seniors from a 16 player squad only signals bright spots on the horizon for Coach Rowe. V78 ice hockey The Stags, an optimistic group entering the season, came up short in a few big games and end- ed the year at 10-13 overall and 10-12 in ECAC Division III play. Fairfield was led throughout the year by their two fine forwards, Steve Festa and jack Smith. Festa topped the 50 point mark with 22 goals and 31 assists. The 53 points placed him second among ECAC Division III skaters. Smith, just a sophomore, contributed 20 goals and 28 assists which placed him fifth on the scoring list. The sea- son began well for the Stags as Festa banged in 5 goals to lead Fairfield to a 9-4 opening win over St. johns. After dropping a tough 8-6 match at Fitchburg, the men were dropped 8-3 at Iona. They did pull themselves togeth- er, however, and went on to win 3 of their next four games. Included in that stretch was a runner-up fin- ish in the Wesleyan Tournament. The host Cardinals, another Divi- sion III post season participant, nipped the Stags 4-2 in the final. After beating St. john's to raise their Division record to 6-4, the Stags lost 5 of their next 6 games to fall 7-9 and saw their tourney hopes disappear. women's tennis The Fairfield University wom- en's tennis team finished their 1982 season on a down note as they dropped a 5-2 match to Wes- leyan. For the Lady Stags, they ended the campaign with a 2-10 ledger. Despite only registering a pair of wins all season long, both triumphs were decisive as they were by margins of 9-0 against the University of New Haven and Queens College. The Fairfield women also lost a couple of heart- breaking 5-4 cliffhangers to the University of Bridgeport and Pace University. Senior captain, Penny Wolfe, playing in the num- ber one singles slot turned in a 5-7 record for the Lady Stags. Despite having her second straight losing season, Fairfield's O'Mara re- mains optimistic about her club's prospects for the 1983 campaign. We will only be graduating one senior from a team of nine, so we will have a strong nucleus return- ing next year, said the netter's mentor. In addition, for 6 of our 9 women, this past season was their first on the intercollegiate level. Coach O'Mara also point- ed to the fact that many of her youthful charges fared well in the recent New England Women's Championships and that boded well for next year. All in all, the Lady Stags, in 1983, will be out to reverse their recent two-year downward slide and return to their winning ways. football ln his first season as head coach Randy Coppolla's football team had a disappointing season. fin- ishing with a 2-7 record. Offen- sively, the Stag's leading rusher was sophomore Tucker Cambell. Three of the team's players were voted All-American: Paul De- Marco, Bob Meyers, and Tony Deluca, team captain. The grid- ders began the year with three losses, but came back by winning their next two games against Siena and Eastern Ct. Unfortu- nately the rest of the season was all downhill as the Stags went on to lose their last four games of the season. With plenty of returning players Coach Coppolla is hoping for a winning season next year. rugby Paul Davis's rugby team had a fantastic season in 1983 as the A, B, and C teams won their every game, beating Boston College, Southern Connecticut, Provi- dence, and St. Anselm's. The C team came away with three shu- touts out of their four games. In Fairfield's Second Annual Rugby Tournament Fairfield came out on top as they beat Oberlin 17-13 in overtime and then went on to win against Manhattanville in the finals, 14-6. Two of the leading scorers for the Stags were Paul Sheehy and Connor Gaynor, both of whom who will be returning next season. Davis can certainly be proud of his ruggers as they had the best record this year of any of the Fairfield teams. SOCCCI' The Fairfield University soccer team, coming off a school record setting season a year ago, had a disappointing season this year with a 3-15-1 record. Coach Kuhl- mann lost three of his four top scorers of last year to graduation so the losing season was not too much of a surprise. The team started the year with a 4-1 loss to Providence. The Stags didn't get their first win until mid-way through the season by a 2-1 victo- ry over Connecticut College. They finished up the season on a bright note when winning two of their last three games. Tom LaTourette and Mark O'Leary were the team captains this year and Tom Don- ino was the lone senior starter. With few players graduating, next year looks very promising for Coach Kuhlmann's team. women's basketball Coach Nolan's netters had an- other winning season in 1982-H5 with a I8-ll record. The team started the year with a 58-S4 win over East Carolina, but then went on to lose their next two games to Boston University and Northeas- tern. An eight game winning streak in the middle of the season included victories over Harvard, St. Peter's, and Fordham. The women competed in the Warner Classic, the Dial Hurricane Clas- sic, and the ECAC Champion- ships this year. Leading the team in both scoring and rebounding with 486 points was sophomore sensation Katrina Fields. Carolyn Hodges and Kelly Stryker also contributed greatly to the team. With few members of the team graduating, the future looks very promising for Coach Nolan's team. 179 men's tennis baseball men's basketball The men's tennis team conclud- ed a highly successful campaign with a fine showing in the New England Championships. After completing the regular season with an 8-5 ledger followed by a fourth place finish in the MAAC tournament, the Stag netters end- ed up fifth out of 27 participating teams in the New England Tour- ney. In addition to its overall per- formance, Fairfield, coach by Dr. joe Grassi, was the top Connecti- cut college combine in the tourna- ment. On the regular season, Rome Lillicrafwas the top singles performer with five wins along with a second place finish in the MAAC championships. Lillicraf also teamed up with Rich O'Keefe to form the Stags' top doubles team with a record of7-3. In addi- tion, O'Keefe, playing in the 115 singles competition was the run- ner up in the MAAC Champion- ships. Looking ahead to next sea- son Grassi loses three players, Brian Murphy, Ray Cunningham, and Eric Lemieux to graduation. He will return eight seasoned vet- erans from this year's squad. 180 While the overall season pro- duced a disappointing 6-22 re- cord, the baseball team came up with some of its best efforts in game against Metro Atlantic Con- ference teams, winning four of five MAAC games and walking off with the conference crown. The title was the first for a Fair- field team in the brief two-year history of the conference. In con- ference play the Stags of head coach Don Cook defeated Iona, St. Peter's, Fordham and Manhat- tan while losing only to Army. Despite the lackluster record, there were several individual stars for the Stags. Senior first baseman Carm Farese had an outstanding all around year. He led the team in several offensive categories. Far- ese hit a team-high of .324, and had a field percentage of .980. His 34 hits, 20 runs batted in, and 18 runs scored were all team highs. Also hitting above the .300 mark were Mark Portanova and Mike Della Vecchia. Among the pic- tures, junior righthander Dave Caseria had the most success with a 3-3 record. The other three wins went to senior lefty Keith D'A- mato. Coach Cook will have five players graduating from his spring's team. The men's basketball team bet- tered their last year's record of 11-18 by finishing up the season at the .500 mark with a 14-14 ledger. They started the year off well with four straight victories, and the first loss was to Notre Dame. However the end of the season wasn't as good as the beginning as the Stags dropped seven of their last eight games, with their only win over New Hampshire. Pete DeBisschop, the team captain, led the men as high scorer and re- bounder. DeBisschop, a senior, scored 543 points this season and finished his Fairfield career with a total of 1219 points. He was in- vited to play at the Portsmouth Invitational, one of the top post season all star games in the coun- try, and was an All-MAAC pick, named to the All-New England team, and an All-East and All- America honorable mention. Tony George contributed to the team this past season with 398 points, while jerry johnson scored 302. Next year looks bright for the Stags as they lose only one senior starter, DeBiss- chop.
