FAIRFIELD OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT FAIRFIELD, CONNECTICUT 06430 n 12031 255-5411 May 25, 1982 Dear Graduates: At the Commencement Exercises on May twenty-third, I had the pleasure of awarding each of you your baccalaureate degree. I am now happy to convey to you, as Graduates of the Class of 1982, my heartiest congratulations, not only on your successful achievements of the past four years, but also on becoming Fairfield's newest alumni. As recent graduates, you are, I suspect, still preoccupied with the uncertain ties that lie ahead -- the challenges of graduate school, the insecurities of your first job, the risks of new relationships. And yet, as new alumni, you are in a position to appreciate all that has been given you these past four years . The quality of your lives has been greatly enriched because of your Iesuit education at Fairfield University. Not only should you face the chal- lenges of today's world unhesitatinglyp you must also give fully and generously of what you have received by reaching out to others with care and concern. I trust that Fairfield University will always be a part of your reaching out.' We welcome your presence on campus: we encourage your involvement and support in alumni activities: and we rely on your enthusiasm in directing future students to your alma mater. May the motto of the University -- to grow through faith to the fullness of truth -- permeate your lives in the days ahead and may you find success in your new endeavors. Congratulations and God's blessings. Sincerely, 424, ,lA44,. 4 g Aloysius P. Kelley, S.I. President S.. u . U Lil-lf' ,. 3 ,t.. ....-.,...,,, FY? nu-Q ,, Y. M, .... Y . However, while the days of undergrad- uate fun and festivity are permanently behind us, the memories of these times will live on forever. From the very first day we stepped on campus as nervous freshmen in September 1978 until we passed through the graduation procession four years later, each one of us has been actively working on a storehouse of memoribilia. Even though every one of us has accumulated slightly different experiences, the times we shared here at Fairfield may be touched off by a glance at yearbook pictures, the mentioning of a friend 's name, or an unexpected phone call or letter in the mail. As years pass by and each one of us blazes his or her own trail through life, the recollection of certain fond memories may become more difficult as our collegiate years grow farther behind. Let this list serve to jog your memory as you remember the best moments you as a member of the Class of '82: For the great outdoors, there's nothing like a Northwest Beach party . . . Suffolk Massachusetts Iona fovertimej Wesleyan fovertimel Connecticut field hockey Second-year coach Marilyn Rowe led her squad to the university's first ever EAIAW Divisoin III playoff berth by virtue of their 5-4-3 record during the regular season. The 1981 team held their opponents scoreless on five occasions while registering impressive triumphs over Drew University and Barrington College and salvaging ties against Adel- phi, Mitchell and Vassar. Offensively, senior co-captain Nancy Whelan led the team with IO points, while sophomore Lauren Lam and freshman Sue Harrison each added five points. In goals, senior Mary Carrington and freshman Sue Weyant combined to register 99 saves while allowing only I5 goals in compil- ing a 1.1 goals against average. In the EAIAW, the Lady Stags dropped a nar- row 1-0 verdict to highly ranked Wor- chester Polytech, leaving the team new heights to shoot for as the fall 1982 season nears. 176 girls basketball The 1981-82 season proved to be the winningest in the team's 1 1-year history as the Lady Stags chalked up an I8-XO record in their first year of Division I play. In surpassing the previous record of 16 wins in a season, Diane Nolan's squad had their first .5oo season in six years. A seven game win streak including victories over Harvard, St. Francis and Connecticut highlighted the season, as did their capturing the Princeton Tiger Classic crown. Leading the team in both scoring and rebounding was outstanding freshman Katrina Fields. The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie-of- the-Year averaged 16.2 points and 12.6 rebounds a contest while blocking 76 shots during the season. Aiding Fields was sophomore Carolyn Hodges, who tossed in 1 1.1 points a game and snared 7.1 rebounds per contest. The senior co- captains, Janine Demarest and Iohnna Warner, both concluded fine four-year careers, Demarest averaged 2.3 points a game and handed out 85 assists, while Warner socred 2.9 points a game and grabbed 1.3 rebounds per outing. No- lan's team had I3 returning lettermen from this year's team, making the 1982- 83 outlook very rosy for the Lady Stags. SOCCCT The soccer team did not start off on the right foot, but concluded the 1981 season by winning eight of its last I2 contests to finish at 8-11. In setting a school record for most wins by a soccer squad, the booters chalked up a 6-2 re- cord in the Tri-State Soccer Conference, good enough for second place. Senior Mark Longwell led the attack by netting 1 1 goals, breaking his own record of ro set just a year prior. Sophomore Mark O'Leary added seven goals, senior co- captain Kevin O'Connell scored four goals, and senior Al Zappalla and junior Tom Donino each added three goals apiece. Along with Longwell and Zap- palla, senior Co-captain Paul O'Leary will be lost to graduation, but Coach jim Kuhlmann looks forward to having many returning lettermen, two of them being goalkeepers. Sophomore Brian jozwiak recorded three shutouts in the final four games while freshman John DiNallo shut out St. john's earlier in the season. With plenty of returning play- ers, look for the Stags to break their single season win record real soon. ice hockey Under the guidance of Coach Dr. John McCarthy, the ice hockey team started their 1981-82 season in impres- sive fashion. However, a tough February schedule dashed any hopes of making the Division III playoffs as the team settled for a 9-14-1 ledger. The season did have its high moments, as the Stag skaters scored impressive wins over Up- sala, Nichols and Quinnipiac, with the latter two constituting the final wins of the season. Sophomore Steve Festa had an excellent season, leading the team and finishing fourth in the Division III scor- ing race with 39 points on I9 goals and 20 assists. Senior Greg Inman was the team's number two scorer with 18 goals and I4 assists for 32 points. Senior joe Motherway added 29 points and fresh- man Jack Smith contributed 25 points. In goal, junior Billy Oakes logged over 1,ooo minutes in the net while register- ing an impressive 647 saves and a 4.31 goals against average. Besides Inman and Motherway, Bill Nayden will also be lost to graduation, though I7 returning let- termen may signal an excellent 1982-83 year in the works. football In Head Coach Fran Lynch's final season at the helm, the gridders turned in a fine 7-2 record, qualifying them for post-season playoffs. On offense, the team was capably led by junior quarter- back Dan Almeida and featured the fine backfield duo of seniors Tom Meyers and Larry LeBlanc. Sophomore receiver Tom McKeon added some late season fireworks by scoring a pair of touch- downs in each of the last two contests. On defense, the Stags were led by senior defensive tackle Larry Mordarski and sophomore Tim Ulles, blending into a tough unit that shut out Siena and Manhattan and permitted Maritime Academy to score just five points. On special teams, the steady toe of place- kicker jim O'Connell provided addition- al offensive strength. With Lynch gone and seniors Meyers and Mordarski lost to graduation, new coach Randy Cop- polla will have to fill a few key positions before the Stags can embark on an at- tempt to better their fine 1981 record. boys basketball In his first full season as head coach, Terry O'Connor must have run the gamut of emotions. In piloting the squad to a Io-16 regular season mark, he and the team reached a disappointing low at the start of the season when na- tionally ranked Virginia crushed the Stags, 107-66. However, satisfying out- ings a few weeks later resulted in a tough double-overtime loss to Boston College, a narrow defeat at the hands of Connecti- cut, and an impressive win over arch- rival Holy Cross. A win over Manhattan in the final game put the Stags in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference playoffs, where they bowed out in the semi-finals. During the course of the year, the leader and catalyst of the squad was junior forward Hank Foster, whose 15.8 points per game led the Stags. Right behind him was rapidly improving junior center Pete DeBisschop, averag- ing I3 points and 7.7 rebounds per con- test. Graduation will cost O'Connor two starting seniors and a pair of fine spot starters. Rich Wejnert, who averaged about I2 points a game, and point guard Kenny Daniels, a defensive menace to many opponents, will leave two starting positions to be filled. Also, guards Mike Aldridge and Rich D'Antonio, who both split duty at the other guard posi- tion, will be sorely missed. With Foster and DeBisschop back, however, O'Con- nor can look to a good nucleus to start a 1982-83 season. '77 softball The season started out slowly for Coach Bruce Lazar's softball team as they lost their first five games before sweeping a double-header from Trinity College in their initial home contest. The Lady Stags finished their season with a 6-17 record against a schedule which consisted of mostly Division II opponents while Fairfield competes on the Division III level. The highlight of their first varsity season was an invita- tion to the E.A.I.A.W. regional play- downs. Another highlight achieved by the team was being ranked as the 715 Division III team in New England in a weekly college coaches' poll. Leading the offense for the Lady Stags was junior Ellen Petkaitis with a .319 average. The pitching chores were handled mainly by Marlene Barone and Betsy Brady. Both finished the season strongly and being sophomores, Lazar expects them to be the mainstay of his staff for the next two years. The team will graduate five sen- iors, all infielders, Ellen Fantry, Clare Sullivan, Kathy Klaus, Mary Ann Lang and Captain Merci Madar. All contrib- uted greatly to the maturity of this young team, which has seven sopho- mores and two freshmen, so the future looks promising for Lazar's Lady Stags. girls tennis A tough season-ending loss to the University of Bridgeport separated the Lady Stag tennis team from a .500 re- cord. I-lowever, despite their 4-6 ledger, Coach Tamma O'Mara got outstanding play from quite a few individuals on her squad. Co-captains Lissa Tuffin and Linda Tricomi, a pair of seniors, pro- vided excellent play and leadership throughout the season. Dawn Doma- lewski, the other senior on the team, and junior Anita Hoffner also contributed to the team's success. While 0'Mara will be forced to start the 1982 fall season without these four valuable individuals, a good crop of underclassmen are wait- ing to fill their shoes. Freshmen Kathy Baum and Karin Merlin sported two of the best individual records on the team, finishing 9-I and 8-2, respectively. Ju- nior Penny Wolfe will provide team leadership as next year's captain. baseball A balanced batting attack, headed by senior co-captain Joe DeVellis and soph- omore catcher Mike DellaVecchia, and a much improved pitching staff helped Fairfield University to a successful 1982 season. The Stags of Coach Don Cook finished the year with an I8-I5 record, including an invitation to the ECAC New England Regional tournament where the team finished third. The sea- son was a remarkable reversal of the pre- vious year when the Stags posted a 10-19 record. This year the Stags got off to a slow start, winning just one of their first nine games, but they battled back to win their next six straight and I4 of their next 16 games to emerge as one of the top teams in New England and earn the number two seed in the New England regional. DeVellis had an outstanding senior season as the team's top hitter with a .319 average. In II 3 at bats, he struck out just seven times. I-le will be sorely missed along with other seniors Al Zappala fsecond basemanj and co-cap- tain Jim Kenning who finished his pitch- ing career with a 6-4 mark and setting a school record when he struck out 18 batters in blanking Manhattan on a one- hitter. In addition to gaining an ECAC tourney bid, the Stags finished as the runnerup in the Metro Atlantic Athle- tic Conference. The Stags won four of five conference games, bowing only to champion Army, 8-7, in the next-to-last game of the regular season. With a whole crop of underclassmen left, the team looks headed for a very bright fu- ture. 1 I i w0men's Chorale 1 ' nl., men's glee club 1 young democrats encing ' K ' ' I f 13' I f X tour guides i .f-X! You were united as the class of 1982 and have grown together in knowledge and in friendship. Fairfield University also provided you with many opportunities to develop as individuals. We hope that this edition of the Manor has captured your experiences at Fairfield University and will serve as a keepsake of your past achievements and memorable times. The production of the 1982 Manor is the result of the dedicated efforts of our staff and many others. A special word of thanks and appreciation is extended to the Mail- room staff, Jim Fitzpatrick, moderator of the Manor, Delma Studios, and Marge Scheidl, Herff Jones Yearbook representative. We are sincerely grateful to them for their help and guidance. As you move forward into the uncertain but eagerly awaited future, may your memories of Fairfield always re- main a part of you and may this yearbook help to recall the highlights of your college years as time goes by. You have a lot to be proud of and we wish you the best of luck and much happiness in your future endeavors.
