George H. McCarron for his thirteen years of services at F airheld University. We appre- ciate his many hours spent reg- istering students, his patience while handling add-drop courses and his workmanship in constructing Fair'Held's built-in class card hle. Fr, N1cC.1rron, undergraduate registrar for 13M years, sits in front of his 1000 pigeon holes that hold class cards for all courses. The Rev. George H. McCarron, a native of Newton, Massachusetts and one of eight children, attended Boston College and graduated in 1933. He then entered the Jesuit Society and was or- dained in 1944. Prior to becoming Registrar at Fairfield, Fr. McCarron taught high school history in Massachusetts and Maine, and he spent one year at the Prep. He was also on the faculty at Holy Cross College and Weston College. From 1951 to 1954, he served as an administrator in the Jesuit Community here at Fairfield, then he became manager of the Jesuit summer retreat house in Sunapee, New Hampshire. He stayed there four- teen years until he was assigned to his present post, as Fairfield's undergraduate Registrar. When Fr. McCarron arrived at Fairfield in 1968, registration was a tedious process done, on a I4 first come -first served basis, entirely by hand. In the early 70,s, a computer was installed, making it possible to complete registration in a fraction of the time. The Registrar's office in turn, has been able to cope with the University's growing enroll- ment. Fr. McCarron has retired this past March and is looking forward to much rest and relaxation. He plans to enjoy his hobby of wood working and would like to visit every so often to make sure things are running smoothly. Fr. McCarron will be greatly missed by both the students and the admin- istration staff. The Class of 1981 wishes Fr. McCarron the best of luck in the future and a long and restful retire- ment. -Q Fred Barakat's l 1-year reign as the head basketball coach at Fairfield University has been a solid eleven years of growth and success. Keeping Fairfield, a small Jesuit school of just under 3,000 students, among the Eastern elite as far as Divi- sion I basketball is concerned has been no easy task. Yet, Barakat and the Stags have endured, and quite well at that. Since taking over in 1970, Barakat has guided the Fair- field fortunes up the ladder in the East. The growth in stature of the basket xiprogram, within the strict academic frame- the U, iversity, has been matched by the subsequent per al reputation. He is considered, by Qkiffiilotivators, strategists and whether at a basketball or booster club affair, Barakat is performer. . l970 as a rookie head coach program was struggling. at Assumption, his assistant at UConn. Fred Barakat, Zfl lf8l them an ECAC playoff and their third trip to the NIT. That team was ranked among the East's top ten and among the nation's top 30 according the The Sporting News and Bas- ketball Weekly. That edition of the Stags also ranked among the top 10 teams in the nation in team offense with a scoring average of 86.5 points a game. The 1978-79 team finished as the number two team in the nation, behind only UCLA, in team field goal percentage 1.5401 and third in the nation in team free throw percentage f.770J. Highlights from this past season include Barakat chalking up his 100th coaching victory, a 123- 103 humbling of 14th-ranked Holy Cross which set a Stag scoring mark and a 26-game home winning streak, which was the longest in the nation. Fred Barakat is a native of Union City, N..l. and is a 1961 graduate of Assumption College. At Assumption, he sparked a team that became a Division ll national power. He cap- tained the Greyhounds as a senior and was named to the Little All-America team. He was also an outstanding catcher on the baseball team. Following his graduation with a B.A. in History, and a brief tryout with the N.Y. Knicks, Barakat returned to New Jersey to coach at Hasbrouck Heights High School. After five seasons at the high school level, he re- turned to Worcester, Massachusetts and Assumption Col- lege to assist his former coach Andy Laska. ln I969, he shifted to UConn to assist Dee Rowe before coming to Fair- field. Barakat, who was also kept very busy as the assistant athletic director while here at Fairfield, earned his MA. in personnel and guidance from Montclair State in 1966. ' 1 1 womens tennis The womenis tennis team completed the l980 fall season with a dual match record of 8-3 which included notable victories over Holy Cross College and the University of Hart- ford. Standouts in the regular sea- son include Linda Tricomi and Anita Hoffner who finished with an ll-l record in the second doubles position. In addition, members of the team competed in both the Con- necticut and the New England In- tercollegiate Tournaments. At the state event, Cindy Fischer and cap- tain Mary Ann Hansen proceeded to the finals of the doubles consola- tion, while Penelope Wolfe was de- feated in the semifinals of the sin- gles consolation. The squad will par- ticipate in several scrimmages in the spring in preparation for the EAIAW Division III Regional Championships. 142 merfs soccer The Fairfield University soccer team closed their 1980 season with a record of 4-14, including the first ever victory over the University of Bridgeport. The 3-2 win was the highlight of the season. Playing a difficult schedule, the Stags also picked up wins over Pace, Seton Hall, and NYU. Mark Longwell, a junior, turned in an outstanding year for the Stags. He scored a team-high 10 goals and added four assists to finish the season as the top Fairfield point producer. The Stags played the season in the newly formed Tri-State soccer conference along with Fordham, Manhattan, NYU, St. John's, St. Peter's, Pace, Seton Hall, and Marist, the team that won the league title with an 8-0 record. Longwell was named to the conference All-Star team and picked as the top midfielder in the league. Among the 14 losses were eight games decided by just one goal, including a 2-l loss to league champion Marist and a 1-0 loss to a very strong Yale team. Coach Jim Kuhlmann's Stars also got some outstanding individual perfor- mances from sophomore Tom Don- ino, junior Al Zappala, junior Car- los Cardosa, and Kevin O'Connell. The Stags lost just three seniors this year and the prospects for 1981 are bright. Coach Kuhlmann will, how- ever miss the services of seniors Phil Kreski, Bob Kennedy, and Bob Nurmi. w0men's Feld hockey The 1980 field hockey team, under first year coach Marilyn Rowe, completed its season with a 2-3-5 record. While the record does not indicate it, Coach Rowe felt that her team enjoyed a successful season and showed considerable' progress over the course of the year. The Stags were led by their trio of cap- tains: Mary Brown, who was a top defensive standout, Carol Tar- kowski, whose two goals and two as- sists along with Eileen Noonan's two assists provided an offensive spark. Leading the way for Fairfield in the scoring column was junior Nancy Whelan who scored three goals and added two assists, junior Barbara Weyant and freshman Lauren Lam, who knocked in two goals apiece. Junior Peggy Kiely and sophomore Maureen McAuliffe each contributed an assist while Kiely had the role of field general and McAuliffe was an adept passer. Paving the way defensively was the excellent goaltending tandem of ju- nior Mary Carrington and sopho- more Alice Raia. Between the two, they allowed a combined total of just 12 opposition goals all season. After having gone through what may be considered a transitional year under Coach Rowe, the Lady Stags appear to be quite confident that next season holds plenty of promise. swim team The Fairfield University swim team completed another successful sea- son. The year was kicked off with an impressive fourth place in the Bos- ton College Relays where both the mens' and womens' teams competed in co-ed relays against such teams as Boston College, Northeastern Uni- versity, Brandeis, MIT, UMass, and other top-ranked New England var- sity teams. Although the women's record was 3-5, and the men's was 1- 2, they do not indicate the many fine performances seen throughout the season. For the men, fine swims were seen from senior Kevin Brown, junior Ted Schimoler, freshmen Rich Cobb, Tim Favia, and Joe Bellwoar. For the women, junior Maura Feeley and freshman Caro- lyn Sabatini had many top finishes. An exceptional performance was seen from freshman Lorilee Healy who qualified for the Nationals in both the 50-meter and 200-meter backstroke, along with Lynn Angelo and Lori Beam, who both qualified for diving. Being a team almost en- tirely made up of underclassmen, the swim team is looking foward to an even better season next year. men's basketball The 1980-81 season began with a lot of new faces. The Stags lost three seniors from last years' 1 1-16 team, and guard Rich Broggini was forced to forego his senior season due to chronic bad injury. However, seven new players joined the squad and their potential looks impressive. Among the highlights for the Stags were the in-season tournaments. The season opener was the IPTAY Classic at Clemson, which they lost to Clemson. The Elm City Classic at the New Haven Coliseum and the Bankers' Classic also ended in a loss to the Stags. Although their record was not as good as they had hoped, the future looks promising. Next year the Stags will be playing in the newly-formed Metro Atlantic Con- ference. Joining Fairfield in this conference will be Army, Iona, Manhattan, St. Peter's, and Ford- ham. It is hoped that in the future, the Metro Atlantic Conference champion will be awarded an auto- matic berth to the NCAA Basket- ball tournament. w0men's basketball After going just 7-16 through the first three months of the season, Coach Dianne Nolan's Lady Stags finished by winning 6 of their last 7 outings. ln capping their final five regular season contests. the Fair- field women gained a bid to the State Division ll tournament and a number 2 seeding. The Lady Stags lost a 63-58 decision to New Haven, the eventual tourney champs, and then won the consolation title by a 55-48 score over Eastern Connecti- cut. Donna Margine, Fairfield's outstanding senior captain, led the team in scoring as she finished the year averaging 14.4 ppg. Margine ended her career with a four-year total of 1,558 points, the most ever by a woman at Fairfield. Although she will lose Margine, Coach Nolan has plenty to smile about when look- ing to the future. Next season she will return with two well-seasoned juniors and four experienced sopho- mores. In addition, there's a strong crop of freshmen who gained some valuable experience, including Carolyn Hodges who was the second leading scorer and rebounder this year, and 6'1 Liz Carroll who missed 25 games due to leg injuries. Based on this year's strong finish, the Lady Stags can envision the prospects of a winning season in the near future. 143 men's tennis The 1981 men's tennis team won its last three matches of the season, to finish with a 6-6 record. Four sen- iors will be lost to graduation and will be sorely missed: co-captains Jeff McNamara and Greg Magner, Ed Poirot, and Keith Richardson. There were several highlights during the season. The team made a very good showing at the New Eng- land College tennis tournament. Jeff McNamara got to the quarter- finals of the winners division and Keith Richardson and Rich O'Keefe got to the semi-finals of the losers bracket. Jeff McNamara also broke the all-time singles record at Fairfield, with a record of 8-4. Freshman Ray Liss played number one and also did very well, as did Keith Richardson and Brian Mur- phy. Although next years team will be relatively young, there are some sol- id tennis players returning which could form the nucleus of a very suc- cessful team. 144 men's ice hockey The 1981 Skating Stags enjoyed a very successful season under the tu- telhee of Dr. John McCarthy. The 14-9-1 Stags narrowly missed the playoffs as they were ranked ninth out of 26 teams in Division III, ac- cording to Hockey Magazine. The season was highlighted by the dramatic, first-ever Stag victory at the Wesleyan Tournament. The Stags beat Trinity College in the first round and bested host Wesley- an in the final round to win the tour- nament. The Stags will lose four members to graduation: Captain John Fitz- gerald, co-captain Dicky Crowellg Kevin Leysg and John Kelly. The four contributed significantly to the Stag ice fortunes and will be sorely missed. But with many lettermen re- turning, the 1981-82 ice hockey sea- son promises to be a good one. men's baseball Although Fairfield University's baseball team lost two very impor- tant players to graduation last year fLarry Bossidy, a left-handed pitch- er with a 5-1 record in 1980 who signed a free-agent contract with the Houston Astros, and -four-year star Cedrick Warner, who conclud- ed his career with 138 hits, an all- time highj, the 1981 squad man- aged a 10-19 record. Again, the 1981 schedule was one of the East's best. St. John's, the Northeast representative in the Col- lege World Series, was the road opener, and NCAA Division II na- tional finalist New Haven and de- fending ECAC New England cham- pion Maine were other foes. Three meetings with perennially strong Connecticut, the second of which took place under the lights at Wa- terbury's Municipal Stadium, and a southern trip which included a pair of games with the University of North Carolina and three games against East Carolina were other highlights. Fairfield University baseball has reached a peak of excellence under athletic director and head coach Don Cook. He has orchestrated the Stags rise from a floundering col- lege division team into one of the East's strongest and most respected Division I programs. Three straight appearances in the ECAC New England Tournament, 1977-79, stand- as testimony to Fairfield's consistency. And although this was his 16th season as head coach, Coach Cook's unbridled enthusiasm and energy made it seem like his first. W0men's Tennis , sail! Many Saturday afternoons throughout the year were spent in the basement Manor office in Southeast working on the book. There are 18 pages of full process color: eight in the first signature, eight in the eighth signa- ture and two in the fourteenth signature.
