' '4.. And a million tomorrows shall all pass away, 'Ere I forget all the joys that were mine today. It can be said of all years that they were the best of times and the worst of times, so let us begin here, For l975!1976 was truly a year of pleasures and pursuits, and was full of hopeful beginnings and tragic endings. On campus we saw the bright beginnings of a new student gov- ernment era, and later watched its demise. As the nation raged about the fiscal conditions of New York City, the campus concerned itself with the pros and cons of the parking lot situation. The fashion scene marked the return of longer hem- lines, wrap garments, and fitted suits. We mourned the loss of two faculty members and welcomed new ones. Patty Hearst dominated the country's papers and newswires, and Gerald Ford sought reelection against such competitors as lim- my Carter, Ronald Reagan, and Morris Udall. Broadway buzzed with the success of its newest kick, a play called A Chorus Line, the year's best seller became Woodward and Bernstein's The Fi- nal Days, and movie-goers were awed by lack Nicholson's performance in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. Fairfield University combatted the flu, while the nation's research teams fought their battle against cancer. After long debate the controversial Con- corde SST, a supersonic transport, was approved for commercial service in the United States. Fol- lowing many years of seclusion, Howard Hughes, the inimitable recluse, again became the object of public speculation as the result of his death. Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman , Norman Lear's soap opera spoof, zoomed into popularity, and big cars moved over on the road to make way for smaller, less energy consuming products. Ours was a year much like all others, yet differ- ent in many ways. Our thoughts focused on the economy, energy conservation, politics, and ecol- ogy - all in all, the perennial concerns of man- kind. For, we have seen throughout this year that progress is indeed our destiny, and that in some immeasurable way each of us will affect our times. ll
