Accomplishments accure in a variety of circles, but perhaps the most widely acclaimed is in the athletic arena. The acclaim that is the reward of athletic endeavors brings its glory not only to the individual athlete, but also to the entire univer- sity. However, the pride of being invited to the N.I.T., or being raised from club to varsity status, is only one aspect of athletic achievement. It is in unity and commeraderie, not victory, that athletics attains its most valued ends. JC an - . - . u. NN. pn '-G-1 ,t ..' n , Al' ' c'. . l - 'a B Rx X ' 44, vu '1 ff? . Like its neighbor, the Sound, beach living has its ups VK X and downs. Problems of rent, bailing out the living room, and whose turn is W-in I it to cook? are offset by barbecues, bicycling, and that perennial favorite, the beer blast. The winter months find the beach to be a quieter place, but the spring brings the bustle back and things return to normal, Despite the hardships of hitch-hiking up North Benson Road in the rain, beach life teaches lessons in freedom and independence which many students count among their most valuable experiences. , I 'Wt xx' milf! From the classroom to the cafeteria to the chapel to the commuters congregating in crowded lounges, exchanges occur which broaden our own perspectives. Insight's sources are many, in- volving the development of intellectual, personal, and spiritual relationships. We are liv- ing in an atmosphere filled with potential, a potential whose fulfillment is not reached by communication alone, but furthered by communication's challenge-to understand. 1 gif I 9 IL'--u --Z1-Q-' 'i RI. 4' 4 -4 It-:A4 .'f '-hw .14 . But perhaps if we were awake at those hours we might find more ac- tivity than expected. Nursing students arise early to report for duty on the morning shift. Student teachers can be found warming engines or catching buses in order to arrive at their destinations before the homeroom bell rings. It seems that re- gardless of hovv early you venture out onto the campus, some- one has already been there before you. pu 1 . 3 L 5 ' Q 2 IQX 2 .fs- J 9 d E 2 l 6 13' i I lf 4-1 -4:17 -ff xxx 55g .J 4 Y ,2 Sr ,IAA K, A xx ONE AY I 4i '-o--an .., -..-sf. ,.wg,.,..... , , 4--mu.,-eqgnl I-,?,,.,-f 1'd,,.. .,1 9m .,-.1.- ! s .1 1? . A flood of tests and papers harness students to their desks until not even sleep can prevent the undone work from hounding you in your dreams. Heedful of hast- ily approaching deadlines, weeks of work are hoarded into hours. Vows are made never to let things get so out of control again, but such hindsight does nothing for the present state of affairs. Perhaps the only thing that keeps you at your work is knowing that it will all be over soon. l34 S s 7' '-'sa ' 1 1 -.ggi X 1 if Y N I X . It may be a persistent cough, that tired case of the blahs, a fractured bone incurred from a fall on the campus' slickly iced walkways or during a spirited intramural ball game. The Infirmary becomes the recipient of the injured with their treatment ranging from injections to isolation within the Infirmary's walls. Many sentenced to the latter fate are inclined to think they have been incarcerated rather than infirmed, and the most popular interruption from their internment lies in the use of their imagination in planning an escape. -ii L 0 9 ox ?' - 3 ', ,-1,11., 1, ,, .. 5- . .1 1,-If 1 1 ' ' .ff'..,,- . .1 1 ' .' ,. , 1 ,J 1'f.:1, J..- -,f,'1-3 ' ' 1' 1 1' ' ' ' 1 ' UL 'i,',,7.1lL F, . .1 nv.: 4 -1- .--'. 1, ff f f 1. -f , 1 I ,,,1 LH., ,jw.'If.15... ,'.:: ',. This year witnessed the arrival of WVOF-FM to the campus, the culmi- nation of years of dedicated work and the harbinger of quality broadcasting previously unattainable. Resident students would not feel at home without music penetrating the concrete walls of the dormitory. Moods are both created and enhanced by music and the stereo is one of the students' most valued possessions. Realizing man's affinity toward music, the Student Government sponsored rock concerts and monthly Evenings of Mu- sic in an appeal to music lovers of all varieties. The success of these events coupled to the sup- port for WVOF-FM all indicate that man must make music. Sl' 0 U63 N11 T60 U 'T 0,0 3 . . . .o.O gon or .SQQOO . ,IS 2' l '1 6 6 if .oi lf' vig! The cam- pus grounds are deserted, belonging once again to Nature and her creatures. Yet the silence is so full it hums. It is the silence of concentration, the stillness ifx that preceeds excitement. An intuitive sense assures the quiet listener that ac- tivity is breeding somewhere, and so he awaits the intrusion of an alarm clock, the disturbance of previously empty hallways by the openning of classroom doors, or the emergence onto the quad of questionable quantities of streaking students. Before the quaver of the calm reaches its climax in sound, allow the mind to quest after answers in an attempt to quench the quiet's thirst. 182 Q ol? However, reverence has been replaced by romance and revelry in this rat race year of 1974. For many Fairfield students, R.S. 10 has become just another one of those required courses, and few of us remember the relivance of the ressurection or the meaning of revelation. The rhyme and the reason of our religious role seems to have been burried beneath reems of radical and racial rhetoric. But with this recent reverse in religious concern at Fairfield, we can look forward to a rebirth and will then rejoice. A' 21 ? 11ll! Utterances of the ugly Watergate insident, the unbelievable price increases, or the unruly en- ergy crisis were the cause of many an ulcer in 1974. Umbilically sheltered un- der the umbrella of college life, students uniquely possess an unmatched en- vironment for understanding universals. While the real world continues to unravel and change, the students' world remains ubiquitous to that of his unknown ancestors. His life is still spent uncovering the quest of Ulyses, the underlying meaning of ultimates, or the christian concept of unity. 1 l 1 I l Z 4 F l I 5,1 fi af ,,-, x. x ia NHL T 1 ui 'K P Dr 0 , '4, Fir' , LT . -Y-Ag -V I' fi funn-T Se' ' 'ra' -pa. The class of '74 also had the distinction of being the first class to be fully co-ed. In the fall of 1970, 234 women were the first females to be educated at Fairfield. Among these co-eds were 20 Nursing students-Fairfield's newest major. Applications had soared, admissions criteria had scaled un- precedented heights, and Fairfield was rightfully proud of its newest scholars. In retrospect, it seems particularly fitting that this was the biggest, the brightest, and the best freshman class ever to enter the student body, because like its counterparts all across the country, the class of 1974 began its college career in a time of great transition. A troubled era of violent conflict was ending, and a new age of cooperation, compromise, and progress was about to begin. The aca- demic world had been shaken to its foundation frought with a level of unrest it had never known before. The time had come to pick up the pieces and begin again. Arriving in the wake of Dennis Gallagher's conflict-laden Presidency, the class of 1974 was in- stantly greeted by a frantic call to arms, urging us to join the fight for a cause that, as yet, we probably didn't even understand. A fledgling underground newspaper, boldly christened The Free Press, echoed the oratory of the student activist who demanded a revival of the previous semester's strike. The President himself led the vanguard of the revolution, setting the end of September as the deadline for his renewed offensive. But while Gallagher's Presidency was not yet over, the activism it heralded plainly was. October 1st came and went, but the strike did not materialize, as indeed it never would. The freshman clan settled into the academic milieu and cries of strike were preempted by thoughts of final exams. In February, the class of 1974 helped to elect Steve Dormer as President, and with him came a time of tranquility, a sort of cooling off period for all concerned. Dormer stressed academic reform, and leftest rhetoric took a disdant back seat. Meanwhile, the freshmen began to make a mark of their own. The ranks of the student government, the campus media, the varsity and club sports, and the other extracurricular organizations swelled with the addition of enthusiastic freshmen, male and female alike. Sophomore year began painlessly and after helping to orientate the new freshmen, the class of '74 solidified an identity of its own. Its basketball players were becoming prominent, its politi- cians were talking louder, and the university was taking notice. Then one of our own decided to run for President. Steve Mednick promised to revive the last activism that earlier had flourished at Fairfield, and on this platform, he raced to an overwhelming victory. Apparently however, he misinterpreted his mandate. Defiantly, the students refused to follow his lead to the left, dem- onstrating once and for all that they had rejected confrontation politics. This mood maintained itself into our junior year, when Fr. Mclnnes, President of the University, submitted his resignation. The community organized a search committee, including student delegates, and after weeks of deliberation, Fr. Thomas Fitzgerald was sworn in as the new Presi- dent. The class of '74 was in its heyday. The student government, the campus media, several club sports, and a number of other organizations as well were under the leadership of that year's juniors. Meanwhile, an NIT bid finally found its way to Fairfield, and despite the skeptic- ism of Howard Cosell, we were hardly kicked back up the Connecticut Turnpike. The end of that year also saw the consummation of an agreement with the university making the activities fee mandatory. For the first time, the student government had won financial stability. Finally, senior year began and we made the NIT again. The Stag Her Inn opened its beer taps and the class of '74 made a gallant contribution to the bar's financial success. Graduation ap- proached quickly and four years at Fairfield U. came to a close. J 0- 2 PX 0 ', 'nr ls, 5? I' I, U1' K-1 ,5 - ' ' ' ,, . - . j l X , , -A , . I 'Z 'Iv.--.ff E ,I 1 af' . -.
