Dennis dedicated him- self to us, the students of Fairfield, for four years. We, therefore, dedicate this 7972 Manor to him-the caretaker. Dennis is honored not be- cause of his political action in student govern- ment, not because of his genuine concern for the students at Fairfield, not because of his com- petence and work for tripartate. D May 16, 1972 Distaste, not affection, for a way of life persuades a man to think deeply and persistently about government. Clinton Rossitor When the Class of 1972 arrived at Fairfield the nation and it's students were in the midst of a clamity which would soon shake the nation. Through senseless acts of violence our leadership was taken from us. By means of inequity in our political processes we were faced with unpopular candidates for President. I968 was a time when the youth of our nation decided that it could no longer trust the system that was governing and determining their futures. The climate called for youth participation and interaction in the system. Since that time we have gained a great deal, only through persistance and the determination to gain a vital voice in our nation's decision-making processes. In a sense the government has responded, for many of us can seek elective office and all of us have the franchise. The Democratic Party has responded by adopting the reforms of the McGovern-Fraser Commission . . . Many colleges and universities have fol- lowed suit in allowing for student participation. Many have afforded students with the right that has always been theirs . . . the right to chose what direction one's life will take. As the Class of '72 leaves Fairfield University we can only live in the shadow of the rejection and repudiation of a document which allowed for shared responsibility. Throughout their 4 years at Fairfield the Class of '72 has witnessed changes many of us take for granted li.e. women, 24-hour parietals, beer consumption in the dorms, freedom of choice in dress, etc . . .i. They have been subiected to the promises of our Faculty and Administration contained in the Cox Amendment and The University Council Recommendations of April 27, I969. They have been tagged along in a Con- stitutional Convention, in good faith, steadfast in the ideal that a community consensus would bring about a suitable document. They have devoted much of their four years to the end that students would rightfully claim their role in the policy-making of the University. For all their work and hope they leave us very much the same kind of senseless futility they faced when they began their struggle 4 years ago. This past year we faced the referendum that was 3V4 years coming. For many, the reiection of the Con- stitution was significant of the fact that members of this community will continue to persist in the notion that a student's place is not in determining his future but, rather in subiecting himself to the truths of our men- tors. The thought of that is disgraceful, distasteful, and pitiful. ln the 5 years we have been working to- wards a new governance structure at Fairfield we have been so unrelentless in our reason and our desire that we have not progressed but have only paved the way for a return to peonage. ln any case we have fought hard and long, and must continue to do so. lt is clear that the sectors must realize their necessary interdepedence in order to solve the conflict and tension that hover the campus. The Class of '72 leaves with us an important legacy: That only through shared responsibility can we, as an educational institution, find the adaquate tools to grow and learn. We must continue in that endeavor. i l .f toven Hednick 39 .,,-gnu' nv 4'-fi. Rv, ,tt . '--imp. S s .,..f -v- f 5 ! 1 s '5' ' T f' I 1 e,-'A S . +7'2f'l -i' ' . I.. ... While Thanksgiving saw the early arrival ofa slight snowfall, Christmas was bare. With the late arrival of winter's cold, the football fans had good weather to watch a nearly perfect season. But hindered by the sloppy ice conditions, the Fairfield hockey team managed to play extremely well. The strange weather nearly stopped the Fair- field ski trip, but by traveling far north the skiers at last found the snow which had managed to avoid our University's ground for so long. The names of the characters have been changed to protect the innocent and the guilty. To understand the story the characters must be introduced. Adam, our first character, has a strangely familiar face whose actions typify those of over 2,000 people. His personality fiuxuates between satisfaction and longing, pacivity and rabble-rousing, following and leading. Eve, his partner, is more singular than Adam. She is delibrate and persuasive woman who makes it a point to be heard. Adam and Eve have a unique marriage, Adam tends to be lazy, letting Eve make all the decisions and govern their household. Adam and Eve live in a beautifully landscaped 200 acre community in Southern New England, called Eden. Eden is a curiously familiar area, since it is ruled by one man- Governor Godly. Governor Godly fills many shoes. He is the schoolmaster, board of edu- cation, finance committee, sheriff, landlord, and complete director of Eden. .Tv 45-ual' mhz M I . . 4 J X I . Since Adam agreed with her, Eve began searching for the most talented gardener in Eden. Eve along with Adam finally found the right man for the iob. The new caretaker went right to work improving the garden, making it grow more abundantly than ever. A The caretaker, being an industrious individual, planted an apple tree in the middle of the garden, cared for it day and night, until one bright morning its first fruit appeared. Eventually this apple tree became the envy of the whole community. It towered above all the other trees in the garden, and its boughs hung heavy with fruit. Governor Godly upon seeing this impressive creation became insanely iealous of Adam and Eve. He immediately issued an edict stating that since he was the landlord of all of Eden, everything in Eden including the tree belonged to him. lt went on to decree that under penalty of severe punishment no one was to touch the fruit of this enviable tree. After reading Governor Godly's edict, Adam and Eve were heartbroken because for so long they had looked forward to tasting the tree's ripened fruit. Since the caretaker was responsible for the growth and nurishment of the tree from its planting, he was horrified by Godly's edict, and he encour- aged Adam and Eve to ignore the decree and to eat of the fruit. Eve concurred with the caretaker, and she picked a shinny, red apple from the tree. Adam, distrubed at Eve's action, was angered, but he could soon see the justice in it, and followingly bit into the delicious apple. From his vantage point on the hill, Governor Godly witnessed their act, became enraged, and sent his messenger, Mr. Angelo, to drive Adam and Eve and their caretaker out of Eden. Mr. Angelo stormed into Adam and Eve's garden and tore the bitten fruit from Adam's hand, squashing its white fruit into the ground. He then forced the three brave citizens out of Eden, and with their departure the tree wilted and died. Adam and Eve are now cast out of Eden, wandering in an unknown world, Governor Godly sits on his throne having gained nothing, and the story ends with a loss and a strangely calm pacivity. Realizing what I came from, what process I underwent, and what I am as a final product of this environment. Surely my hair is somewhat longer than when I came here, but I am essentially the same person, as I think most of us are. I realized that a valuable part of my education came with- out studying a text or notebook. This is what I must relate to my future to make this experience become fulfilled. '9 T1 .J Y The people, here at school, became more obvious to me this year than ever before. I realized that this school needs a winner, in anything. I felt I could do my part in contributing to that as peit, but I was denied. Yet I did not feel that I had let all those people down. They would have liked to have seen a winner, too, but a total effort is all that can be asked, and l think we are incomplete without one. The completeness is an individual idea which one of us can ponder, alone. How complete each one of us is now, is the result of what we did for four years. We will soon find out what we have been doing for these past four years. So many memories clogged my mind during those few last moments. I recalled the first time I walked up this drive- wayg I thought it was a street.
