- Y nb .sv X 'L ish 54, 24' . ,. Q his , .1 M4 Upon the eve of consciousness and the dawning of dreams Stacherine awaleens to stiffer the pains of morning. He commands his stiffened body into a standing position, and wraps it with tattered cloth- ing. The sleep from his resting clings in calees to his hall!opened eyes as he aims himself' towards the school. Stacherine enters the massive gates of school. He lalls in place unnoticed among the endless herd of children. Together they follow imaginary lines down a congested sidewalls. They herd lilce cattle e innocent of the destiny that awaits in the barn. Stacherine points his vision to the students. They stare bacle convicting him of lunacy. With a shrug he sheds their mocleing and proceeds down an aisle to a preassigned desle in a preassigned row. The children around him are huddled in clusters, babbling senselessly to one another. Suddenly the noise subsides. A calm enters the room and blanleets their movements. Their hands defy the command ol' will. Their mouths move independent of their minds. The rituals begin. The students rise and face the hues draped from a sticle on the wall. Their hands assume a gesture of salute as they mumble out a half- remembered pledge. The puppets fall bacle into their .seats as words from the announcements are hurled through the air. They fly at the students, bounce off closed ears, and fall unnoticed amongst the rubble on the floor. The children stare blanlely as narnes are called out. On cue they respond. Their heads are counted, names recorded, sealed and sent away. The calm receeds. Minds are restored. The children return to their babbling. They are oblivious to their performance.
