N . .. X .Wa X ...S X xx x SX - xxx x use XXVNxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxmmvwxxxN Gllemz Igrupherg LISTENING IN Character: Wayne Scott. Scene: A cozy sitting room. Time: April 15, 1936. Oh shoot the luck anyway! Here I am all alone again tonight. Juliet has gone off to some old lecture on commercial art, so I can't go to her house, but then I guess I shouldn't growl cause I sure am proud of the fame she has acquired as a commercial artist. And there's little sister, Libby. She is some kid, too. Let me think. What is her latest poem? Mm-m-Oh yes- Ode to a Black Crow . A keen piece of work. Guess I'll see how the new radio which that salesman Oddie Howell induced me to purchase, is working tonight. He said his wife, Francis, wouldn't have any other kind in her house. Hm? Jack Gobble invented this new type. Wonder if he's as good at that sort of thing as he used to be? Then he sold his patent to Addis Turpin who has established a radio factory in partnership with John Rittenhouse. Listen! There I've got something. Station WAC. Iowa City. Mr. Fred Webber, candidate for senatorship of Iowa, will speak on The Future of American Ideals . Well, well if that isn't our old class mate, Deacon. Hope you get elected, old dear, but really I am in no mood to listen to a lecture on that subject tonight. Guess I'll try something else. Holy Smoke, what a noise! There-it's O.K. now. Station AEX-Chicago. The first number on our musical program tonight will be a solo by Miss Esther Miller. She will be accompanied by Miss Dorothy Eland, one of the promising young pianists of the musical world. Say, that was real. I'll just listen in on this station a while longer. The next number will be a violin solo by Miss Marcelle Alexander, accompanied by Miss Helen Cain. Well, I've had enough classical music for this evening. I'll try something else. Guess Mr. Howell was right. This is some radio. Hark-somebody talking- To be or not to be. That is the question. Well, I'll be switched. That's Dick Hammon's voice sure as faith. Hum- oh yes, I do remember reading the other day that he has become famous for his interpretation of Hamlet. And also Eileen Ulrich is taking the role of Ophelia. Some combination, I'll claim. I can't endure listening to that all evening, so here's to your success-Abie and Dick. So long. Oh boy! some jazz! Boom-Re Ra Ru Bang! For the benefit of those who have not enjoyed the first part of our program, I will announce again the personnel of Mr. Kearn's Midnight Owls. Mr. Harold Kearns, leader and pianist Mr. Roger Downs, soloist Mr. Kenneth Leathers, banjo Mr. Arthur Baker, Drums Mr. Otto Bowling, saxophone Mr. James Eveland, cornetist A little surprise, eh? I never knew Jimmie Eveland could play a cornet, but then he was always long on talking so I suppose he l1as nuff wind to play one. The next number will be Red Hot Henry Brown , Mr. Kearn's latest hit. Oh hang the luck anyway! That was keen music and now I can't hear it at all. Say, that sounds interesting. What is it?, Station, OHW will now broadcast 'the latest news briefly'. Merle Baker Ell'ln0l1hCll1g. The new mayor of Glasgow, Arthur Graham, says his highest ambition is to rid the city of bootleggers and all other professional crooks. Watch his smoke. Harry Johnson, heavy-weight champion of U.S.A. won from the European champion last evening in a bout which was witnessed by several thousand people. His trainer, Wesley Parsons, said Johnson put up the best iight he had ever seen. illllllllllllllllllllllllllIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII The Quill, Fairfield, Iowa ,llllIlllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllIlllll
