They attended the Dynamic Cheer- leading Clinic this past summer and received sec- ond place overall. They arrived home with a com- bined total of nine ribbons. During football sea- son the cheerleaders are in charge of painting signs, cheering at pep rallies, and also making a victory sign for the Tigers to burst through. So as you can see the cheerleaders work very hard to promote spirit at Fairfield High. 18 Crucible rek .fu , .Hr W 2 3-' Q at F 2 4 I me 11,-f Head: Terri Townsend g Z? it i fi In S , - . ge Valerie Barnes 411' ffl, Donna Sims Co-Head: Judy Todd Jackie Hubbard fi. . , , , . During the 1977-78 season, the Fairfield High School Nlarching Tiger Band, under the direction of Mr. John Prince, attended Marching Festi- vals in Tarrant, Alabama, and Atlanta, Georgia. At each contest, the ninety-seven member unit received superior ratings in all categories, including band performance, Color Guard execution, and Nlajorette and drill team judging. This was done in addition to their appearance at each regular season football game. Although the band is widely known for their marching ability, plans and preparations are now being made to attend concert contests at Samford and Montevallo Universities. These concert competitions, in which the band has not participated in many years, promises to be another field in which they will surely excel. 126 Crucible WF Mark Wood Band President -Ax v L Q Li W t . Color Guard is lead by senior, Leigh Richard. Serving as cap- tain of the Flag corps is Kathy Ayres, with Maddeline lVlcCoy as Flifle Captain. This group, noted for their precision and skill, won several honors this year includ- ing first place at the Day's Inn Festival in Atlanta. Honor Guard members Sheila Williams and Wanda Boykin, lead the band on the field at each performance. The Guard has long been noted for the flare and excitement they contribute to every performance. Music 131 f-- - - The F.H.S. Tiger Band opened the 1977-78 year under the direction of Mr. John Prince. After a brief week at Jacksonville Universityand a long hot sum- mer of practice, the band was ready for football season. Mr. Prince who came to Fairfield from Calera High School, is a graduate of Union College in Tennessee. He is an experienced band director and an all-around fine musician who is devoted to his work. John Prince - Band Director Deborah Sutherland For 134 Crucible - , yoylf i Drill Team Instructor Fred Grady Director's Assistant Mixed Chorus The F.H.S. Choirs, under the direction of Mr. Wil- liam Carr Cpictured at leftj, performed at many school-related, as well as many non-school related functions. Their annual activities include a yearly performance at the Christmas program held at F.H.S. and regional choral competitions held at Ves- tavia High School. At this contest, judging was held for each of the main choir classifications, such as the Male Chorus, Girls' Chorus, Mixed Chorus, and the Ensemble. Plans for the rest of the school year include a sunrise service program held at Lloyd Nolan Hospital on Easter Morning. The Choral Department is indeed fortunate to be led by such a devoted teacher as Mr. William Carr. During his five years at Fairfield, Mr. Carr has never hesitated to assume the added responsibilities of the many extra-curricular activities here at F.H.S., such as the set design and construction for the X spring musical and beauty show. Cast members during shooting match X., feiee Doug Bryant, Director Cleftj, and Choreographer, Deborah Suth- erland between Annie Oakley and Frank Butler. . . William Carr, Choral Director Frank tells Annie of his dreams in The Girl That l Marry Play Synopsis When Colonel Buffalo Bill discovers Annie Oakley, a sharpshooter who doesn't realize just how sharp she is, he makes her part of his famous Wild West Show. Already the star of the show is tall, handsome Frank Butler who's a hero to all the local girls and who is very unimpressed with Annie, both personally and professionally. Annie, much more adept at hitting the bullseye than capturing a man's heart, sets out to make Frank notice her by perform- ing fantastic feats of shooting skill. She wins the star role in Buffalo Bill's show but loses Frank, whose male vanity she has succeeded in wounding, when he leaves to headline Pawnee Bill's rival show. The Buffalo Bill show goes to Europe with Annie a star yet a very discontented woman, but as always happens in happy stories, Frank also misses Annie, and ultimately love is the winner. The finale finds the two sharpshooters and the two wild west shows merging and proving once again that There's No Business Like Show Business.
