Besides acade ' d ' ' ' mic epaitments staffed with well-trained and professional-minded instruc- tors, special departments-speech, music, art, physical education, D. O., television and radio-staffed with specialists in these fields dotted the meadow with nourish- ing grass. The long, easy-to-reach grass was nibbled by those who were satisfied with lust getting by. The short delectable grass was eaten by those who really wanted to learn. Through the years many have grazed in this pasture, and in the future many more will graze here. May the meadow always be green and the grass delectable and nourishing to all who partake of it. lax ' K f-xxx 93 , F IT if Ye'-f'VlX'1-,,, ff N lug Z-l f IXIXXV 1,3 Z- lj YN? 51 F- TTL! Kelley. lt is often called upon to provide entertainment at P. T. A., as well as at community club meetings and banquets. It, upon different occasions, is requested to sing at the church services in Fairfield. The choir's music is always enioyed at school when presented in assembly. Recently some- thing new has been added to its agenda-TV programs. The choir and ensemble have made several appearances on Alabama's Educational Television SchooIarama. The choir has always re- ceived good ratings in choir competitions. Through much hard work this group of fifty F. H. It was a glorious day of bustle and haste, hammering and painting, and excited anticipation for the answers to three big questions: Which girl would reign over the football game as Homecom- ing Queen? Which club float would win first place? Which team would win the homecoming game? It was a perfect day for a parade, not too cold and not too windy. The floats were lovely and just the thing to start home- coming off with a bang. V We played our homecoming game against Hueytown, and it was a very thrilling game! We had some very close calls and a few breathless moments. s , .1 ,, R , U-iff! ,QL- .- 1' 'K -f Y . 4 My ' W. 1,rw34.1 ' 1' 15,4 if. 151fCJ,, 'l'I2':'5fj'taQ5 Q yg f 'mn v ,,. . The team was composed of good material and was well-balanced. No one player was outstanding, but all played as a team. Coach Griffith should be' commended for his excellent coaching during the three years he has spent at Fairfield. Left to right, lst Row: James Rogers, Bill Alexander, Larkin Weekly, Louis Dulton, Robbie Cates, Mickey Walker, Jimmy Fortner, Ronnie Cater, Richard Mitchell, Larry Moran, Jimmy Gardner. 2nd Row: George Sanders, Wellborn Gregg, Don Dulaney, Howard Tennyson, John Sapp, Leon McElroy, Jerry Hollifield, Melford Espey, Jimmy Hayes, Bill Guthrie, Bobby Harmon, Bill Burns. 3rd Row: Coach Griffith, Danny Phillips, Ken Wade, Ronnie Green, George Veitch, Neil Odom, Robert Glaze, Don Hicks, Jerry Davis, James Fancher, Frankie McCarver, Cecil Gentry, Lawrence Rowe, Ronald Chambers, Cecil Gober. .f ar' 4 i H in , . gyxugkm Left to right, Ist Row: Richard Searcy, Charles Dean, Charles Maples, Jerry Bruce, Danny DeViese, Bill Farrington, George Alexander, Ken Robinson, Larry Scott, Wilson Talmadge, Butch Laughlin. FOGTBALL 1956 The T956 Tigers, after a hard fight, managed to come out on the better end of a 6-3 record with a tie with Jones Valley. ln the county conference we were fourth place. The Tigers lost only two games in the county-Hewitt and Shades Valley. The team did well considering the lack of experience in the back field. Although we didn't win the Championship Trophy this year, we are hoping for it in '57. Coach England was a hard and never tiring worker constantly taking the team to success. Baseball is constantly becoming one of the maior sports at Fairfield with the material getting better each year. BASEBALL -TEAM Because of the rapid progress made under Mr. Armstrong's coaching, the l956 B-Team went into a league of six teams. They had a very satisfactory sea- son winning six and losing only four, two of the losses being practice games. ln the league the te-am tied Shades Valley for second place. Next year we will watch these boys on our varsity baseball team. i B-TEAM BASKETBALL The B-Team basketball, under Coach Smiles, made a fine showing. During the latter part of the season two of the B-teamers went up to the varsity to finish the season. There were many other outstanding players to whom we can look for greater things next season. Left to right, Ist Row: Bill Alexander, Bill Guthrie, Jimmy Fortner, Wayne Williams, Robert Lille. BASKETBALL Our Basketball team, being somewhat inexperienced, had only a fair season in 1957. Coach Lutz did a wonderful job of coaching, as he always has. Because we are losing only two members of the team this year, we are expecting great things next year. 4 V 1 1 H ,S T I 0' Left to right, Kneeling: Danny DeViese, Charles Dean, Allen Carmichael, Mike Laughlin, Archie Williamson, Wilson Talmadge, Larry Scott. TRACK Coach Bob Griffith did a fine iob with the track team this year, The team achieved the highest goal of any track team in the history of Fairfield, his being Class A State championship. The team made a fine showing at the Alabama Relays, losing by only a half point to Hewitts Trussville. When the District Meet was held, eleven boys of the track team qualified for the State Meet at Auburn, which was enough to bring home the District Champions trophy. The team placed second only to Shades Valley in the county. During the year they won seven trophies for the school. TENNIS This year what the team lacked in experience they made up for in spirit and desire to play the game. This season the team had two wins and twelve losses which wasn't so bad, since most of the matches were lost by only 2 to 3. Also tennis as a sport at Fairfield High is in its infancy. This is only the second year it has been at Fairfield. Coach Smiles has done a great iob in helping these boys in the length of time he has had. Next year only three of these boys will be back. These include Sterling Hicks, Forrest Gravlee, and Jon Blackstone. Even though the team as a whole next year will have unexperienced boys they are sure to make a good showing.
