Beta members shared prominently in many activities of the school year, 3even having served on the Annual staff, six on the Hi-Life staff, and four on the Student Council. The usual contribution was made to the Beta Education Fund. Three years ago a group of would-be-actora and actresses decided that something must be done to teach students of F.H.S. appreciation of speech and drama. That is still our aim and each year we go many steps toward our goal. Many plays and pageants presented during the year hare been the delight of audiences. Troupe 291 of the National Thespian Dramatic Society is a part of our club. 40 f S3UIAIIDY CRUCIBLE STAFF Charlotte Laster Percy Rogers Editor Business Manager Betty Maxwell..................................................... In April 1944, Student Government was organized and in the following September, put into practice. Although still more or less in an experimental stage, it has proved it's importance many times. We, the students, now feel that we have a part in the affairs of our school. This year, under the leadership of Theo Jones, we have taken another step toward proving that student government can be a success in Fairfield High School. 44 COUNCIL President...............................................................Theo Jones Vice-president..........................................................Stuart Box Secretary-Treasurer...................................................Peroy Rogers Stuart Box Ann Cox Kenneth Dabbs Jean Daniel Donald Estes Jack Herlong Bernard Johnson Theo Jones J W I « Janet McGee Raymond Morton Ira Pearl Parsons Peggy Ponder Bobby Rlttaann Percy Rogers Kathlyn Sawyer Betty Scott Mildred Smith 45 HI -LIFE STAFF Ralph Bowse Jean Alley Editor Business Manager Gordon Holmes....... Roberson Jack Seay Vernon Joiner Jane Logan Jtme Wyatt CHEERLEADERS Blondie's pep and enthusiasm make her a natural choice as head cheerleader even though she is only a sophomore. We are looking forward to two more years of snappy yelling from Blondie. Bobbie has what it takes to give out with the yells for the old home team. Her vitality is something we all like. Jack is a one man cheering squad himself and his crazy ways, although full of corn, provide laughs for every one. This is Jack's last year, but we'll keep on cheering for him. Although this is his first year as a cheerleader, Vernon showed much school spirit and ability. Jane is another new comer, but she's an old hand at making you want to shout your lungs out. Energy and pep itself—that's June. She's a big cheer in a little bundle. 58 SPORTS FIFTH ROW Wheeler, Bush, Maxwell, Cope, Brock, Earp. FOURTH ROW Collins, Howard, Causey, Ellington, Kirkland, Corretti, Doyle, Hodge. THIRD ROW Dabbs, Caines, Watson, Tate, Courington, Autry. SECOND ROW Gilmore, Vowell, Hixon, MCMurry, Waters, Catsban. FIRST ROW Coach Clements, Walden, Box, Hardy, Priestley, Coates, McArdle. 60 FOLLY BOX---CO-CAFTAIN----BACK Polly, with his unusual signal-calling, led the team through the games safely. A Junior in school, he received an all-county nomination. STUART BOX---BACK After two years of hard work, Stuart deservedly won his letter. One of three seniors on the squad, Stuart was a great help during the season. T BILLY BUSH—TACKLE Billy, playing his first year of football, made the team a great tackle. With two more years to play, he will continue his great playing. JAMES CATSBAN--BACK James, the fastest man on the squad, played our hardest position—left half. Hard running, good kicking, and passing, made him one of our outstanding backs. RAYMOND COPE---END Cope proved our best surprise of the year. Playing this position Tor the first time, Raymond proved himself offensively and defensively a superior end. 61 JOHNNY CORRETTI---BACK r Johnny, a sophomore, did his first real football playing this year. He will share the load of quarterback next year and will do great things. EUGENE EARP---END Earp, after two years of hard work, not only made first team and his letter this year, but was an end chosen for the all-county team. EDWARD ELLINGTON----TACKLE Eddie, our big tackle, proved his worth this year. Making county tackle this year, he will be a standout next year. JAMES ASHFORD HIXOH----GUARD Slick made his second letter this year, and will make two more before he leaves. The opposing team soon learned there was nothing doing over that side of the line, because he was playing left guard. BOBBY DEAN HOULDITCH----GUARD Bobby Dean, our only holdover guard from last year, had to leave during the middle of the season. He proved a valuable nan on the team. 62 CLARENCE LOTTERY--GUARD Clarence took over a regular guard position in the middle of the year and proved to be defensive dynamite. With two more years to play, Clarence will give opponents plenty of trouble. DICK McKURRY---3ACK Mac,one of our leather blocking backs, has two more years to play.
