Through the efforts of Miss Y.'illard, instructor in journalism and a staunch advocate of women's rights, a girl, Susan Blake, is elected associate editor. Johnny dislikes having a girl on the paper staff, particularly Susani but his hands are tied since Susan has Miss Vuillard's backing. Johnny and Spud further complicate matters by falling for the same girl, Lucybelle Lee, a sweet little thing from the South. Lucybelle, however, likes Johnny and Spud----------and Preston Hughes, a large, good-looking , school athlete. Johnny and Spud acquire measles, thus leaving the paper to Susan, and Lucybelle to Preston. The quarantine ends on the night of the high school Christmas dance. The Christmas issue of the Penguin, which is put on sale at the dance, causes quite a commotion, due to Susan's novel ideas about journalism. Before the night ends Henry Quinn, the youngest high school principal in the state, proposes, if that is what you call it, to Miss Y illard; Preston develops a nice case of measles? and Johnny becomes aware of Susan's charms. 19
