Jonathan Logan and his good wife, Zamah, run an inn in Vermont with their nephew, Leander Longfellow. On a stormy night Purity Dean, a working girl with a secret, seeks shelter at the inn. She has been forced to give up her work in a canning factory because she cannot endure the attentions of Mortimer Frothingham. Lone and penniless. Purity is seeking employment. When they offer her work as a maid at the inn, she accepts with alacrity. She and the brave Leander meet. Love blooms at first sight. But Purity's new-found happiness is of short duration; for Mortimer is on her trail and he catches up with her, continuing to press Ids unwanted attentions upon her. If he cannot win her by fair means, be will resort to foul I Shortly after Purity's arrival, a little babe is discovered in a basket out in the barn. Purity pleads with the Logans to allow the baby to remain. Then Mortimer institutes a campaign of villainy against her. In order to get Leander out of the way, Mortimer has him looked in a room with a time bomb. Fortunately Leander escapes and prevents Mortimer from carrying out his evil designs. Frothingham disappears and spreads the report that he has left the country. But he comes back in the last act, heavily disguised. Purity is treated to another course of double-crossing and double-dealing. Her secret is discovered and acts as a boomerang, bringing her great wealth; the final curtain sees her resting her fair head on Leander's broad and manly chest. 20 5 v mors STHe ©rvctlilie '41 JUNIOR CLASS SEMESTER VII OFFICERS President.• •••.............................................................Alfred Belcher Vice-president................................................. Freddie, to put it gently, is a heel , and instead of becoming the most popular boy at college—a position promised by his charm and wealth—becomes the most disliked. Finally, when he interferes in the romance of Kit and Amy, and causes Kit, who is working his way through college, to lose his scholarship, the boys set out to kidnap him, besmear him with yellow paint, and deposit idm on the upper floor of the girls' dormitory. Dean Valentine, head of the college and a widower with one son, is bebmitten with Mrs. Hall, the house-mother of the Clover Cottage, where the play takes place. She has a daughter. The children, mortal enemies, hear that their parents are engaged, and stop at nothing to hinder the marriage. They, too, plan a kidnapping. How these two enterprises become unbelievably tangled provides most of the hilarity of the play. Not all of it, though, for the uneducated Tugger and his tussles wid de big wolds of the English language, add their share, as do nis affairs with Bally, the wallflower of the college; Midge, the fattest girl in school, and her attempts to reduce; and the Dean's son. Comic, who believes in free speech, and is arrested for picketing. It is not all farce, of course; and Freddie comes through, finally proving himself a man and winning the respect of the college. 64 ©lie CrvctMe '41 GIRL RESERVE—HI-Y PLAY MOTHERS-IN-LAW BLUES CAST Honey Dillon.......
