24 'ring CRUCIBLE CONTESTS Mr. C. Gilley, a citizen of Fairfield, is the sponsor of the activity, known as the Gilley Reading Contest. This is an annual contest for the girls of the school. Through an elimination six girls reach the final contest. Of these the win- ner receives a gold medalg the one receiving second place has honorable mention. Any girl in school is eligible to compete for this honor. The Gilley Reading Contest came into being in 1926g the winner at that time was Gladys Sessions. Other winners of the medal are: 192 T Avis Barnes 1931 Rita Fergerson 15128 Myrtle Johnson 1932 Margaret Fryer 1929 Nell Sims . 19253 Marie Morrison 1930 Martha Louise Turner VVhat the Gilley Reading Contest is for the girls, the Holmes Declamation Contest is for the boys of the school. ln 1925, Reverend Holmes, from whom the contest takes its name, started the precedent of the Holmes Medal. At first only members of the Forensic Council, a club in the high school, were eligible contestants. Later any boy in school was allowed to compete. There is an elimination in which the six best speakers are chosen for the fi- nals. These six compete for the final rewardsg the winner receives the Holmes Medal, the second best receives honorable mention.
