' Debating ' Debating' was initiated as one ol' l+'airt'ax lligh St-hool's spon- sored activities for the first time in the history of the sehool. 'l'he necessities ol' such an activity has long been felt but no teacher eared to assume the responsibility. Mr. NValler is.sued the call for try-outs and twelve likely look ing candidates reported. A series ol' debates were held as prelim- inaries to the first tryout held in eonneetion with the Oc-toher fes- tival. 'l'l1e six candidates whose work stood out in the lll'Ullllllll?ll'- ies and who we1'e close for the finals were: A. li. Vllliite. tlladys Donnell. Vllesley Blellonald, W. l'. Green, liee lVrinkle, and Loraine lValker. V The result of this eontest grave new lite and new hope to the teani. Loraine Vllallcer and Lee Wrinkle were chosen to defend the negative side while XV. l'. Green and Gladys Donnell were elect- ed to represent the sehool as affirinatire clebaters. The question y V for Inter-lligh behool debate was. Resolved: l'hat the amend- lIlOllt giving' Congress the power to liniit, regulate and prohibit child labor should be ratified by the inany states. ln all the de- bates it fell lf'airfax's lot to defend the ne,Q'ative side. and for this reason Gladys and VV. P. were not given an opportunity to show their ability in a real eontest. Loraine was the outstanding speak- er in all our eontests. We finished the season with 500 per eent and next year should be an all sueeessfnl one as most of the squad will be in school next year. V The Think Shop, as the meeting plaee of the debating teani has been ealled, was the scene of many interesting' discussions. Emphasis was placed on clear analytical thinking, on appreeiation of the truth Zllld pleasing, forceful and effective speakingz High scholarship was 0116 of the distinguishing' eharaeteristies ot' the debating' club inembers.
