During the 1952-53 school term the staff of the Fair Facts published 12 issues of the school paper. Under the direction of Editor William Fox, they changed the for- mat of the paper and became a modern streamlined publication. A definite policy was decided upon and contained the following points: 1. To foster good sportsmanship and school spirit, 2. To publish a newspaper in the interest of the entire student body, 3. To stimulate good citizenship. The motto for the paper was Service.” Awards won by the publication during the year were the National Scholastic Press First Place Honor Rating and Honor Award from the Southern Interscholastic Pre.ss Association. This latter award was the highest award received by a Fairfax County School. -{ 891 OFFICERS Pres. — Robert Cox V. There was a precision and finesse in the band’s performances which brought the plaudits of the students and community. The marching band season was brought to a close with the Mt. Vernon game on Thanksgiving Day. The concert band gave the annual Christmas concert December 19. It entered the District Music Festival as a grade V band and again received a superior rating for its performance. The highlight of the year was the Fifth Anniversary Concert on April 10. The concert was preceded by a two-day clinic under the baton of Mr. Carleton Stewart of Mason City, Iowa. Mr. Stewart worked for two days with the bands and was guest conductor for the Concert. This concert was an outstanding event for the band and was a demonstration of the wonderful progress made by the students over the past five years. Co-gle Director of Athletics The program of athletics at Fairfax High School is considered as much a part of the educational program of the school as any other opportunity offered the students. Its purpose is a part of the great purpose of the school. Physically, it attempts to build strength, skill, efficiency, coordination, and endurance; socially, it attempts to give a true perspective of our competitive society, to give young people the opportunity to meet in competition with others, and to teach an appreciation of good sportsmanship; spiritually, it attempts to teach the great lesson of true loyalty, of love for others, and the satisfaction of team spirit. During the last several years the student body and the faculty have striven to develop a very attractive athletic field. We feel that putting our contests in an at- tractive setting will help us attain our objectives more easily. A green, clean, lighted field with band music and colorful uniforms make a beautiful spectacle that inspires a feeling of good fellowship. Much has been done along this line and much remains to be done. Our athletics offer us fun, excitement, school spirit, and an opportunity to be American in our love for good sportsmanship. d 112 y Varsity Jootball ' 52 VARSITY FOOTBALL SCHEDULE Opponent W e They Washington and Lee. 7 Chamberlain 18 0 James Wood 24 James Monroe 24 13 Western 7 6 Falls Church 9 0 George Washington .. 19 6 Lane 14 South Norfolk 0 21 Mount Vernon 0 40 113 107 COACHES Rayburn Williams, Robert Phipps Patrick Cunningham.
